Going to college did not seem like a reality when I was submitting applications senior year. My choices were to stay home, work, attending the local university, and pay my way through, or get a scholarship to attend another university. Fortunately, I have been able to receive enough aid to support me without having a need to work. I have always been grateful for having a supportive mother who raised and put my sister and I through college. My mother came to this country where she worked while getting an education, ambition that has rubbed off. From a young age, I quickly learned the value of the dollar, and if I wanted something it was not going to come at my request, but would have to be earned, meaning I would have to pay for it. College sometimes just isn’t for everyone; and students can’t handle it all like I couldn’t myself.

Many years ago I remember my parents telling me that in order for me to become successful a college education was a must. They always told me that if I wasn’t in school I could no longer live at home. Both of my parents attended college but neither of them finished. They did not want me to go down that same road because they really regret not getting their degrees.

The benefits that individuals who attend institutions of higher learning realize are more than education; the benefits are numerous and consist of socioeconomic benefits as well as personal benefits for the scholar, including income benefits, employment advantages as well as personal advantages.
Individuals in my generation that decide to go away for college may graduate with a degree but they also graduate with debt and have a hard time finding work in their area of study. College graduates are young and many may not have much experience in their field. It is a bittersweet option to go to college and further your education, I am all for it, but I am not for getting yourself in tons of debt, that will cause you to live your whole life paying off student loans and such. Which is one of the reasons why I chose to stay at home and go to community college, I’m saving money while still getting a great education. In earlier generations, people may not have felt that college was important because they needed a job to support themselves and their families. That is understandable because in the early years becoming an adult meant turning of age, 18, getting a job, moving out and starting your own family, but now turning 18 doesn’t mean you automatically are an adult and can move out and start your own life, I have friends that went to college, have a job but still are not able to move out on their own even in their
