Paradoxes are situations that are characterized by contradictory qualities; they impact a person’s course of action and contributions to society. A person has negative and positive aspects of their personality that affects their perspective of life’s challenges. Their viewpoints may differ from society’s expectation of a flawless life. Everyone’s personality consists of positive and negative contributions. Although Ben Carson, a passionate pediatric neurosurgeon, faced several tribulations throughout his life, he gained wisdom from each experience. In Detroit, Michigan, his mother, Sonya Carson, gave birth to him on September 18, 1951. Unfortunately, Ms. Carson dropped out of school when she was in third grade. This contributed to Carson’s poor living conditions. Carson’s father was a Baptist minister. His parents got divorced in 1951 because Ms. Carson felt that it would be best for Carson and his brother (“Ben.Carson.Biography” 1). Since Carson viewed his father as sympathetic and affectionate, he had struggled to adjust because he grieved over his father leaving (Simmons 3). Even though Ms. Carson was criticized, she encouraged her sons to challenge …show more content…
Carson enjoyed being his “school’s company commander” (Lewis 47). Carson learned that he was amorous for leadership and he was fond of military science. Since West Point saw his potential and dedication, they offered him a full scholarship. Carson declined the offer because he wanted to fulfill his dream of attending medical school (Lewis 22).Carson dreamt of attending college all his life but he had trouble choosing schools. Since he had only ten dollars, he could apply at only one school. After watching the College Bowl, he decided to apply to Yale because their team beat Harvard by over four-hundred points (Lewis 5). Yale accepted his application; he received almost a full
Lareau’s main argument in the text is that when children grow up in certain environments, parents are more likely to use specific methods of child rearing that may be different from other families in different social classes. In the text, Lareau describes how she went into the home of the McAllisters and the Williams, two black families leading completely different lives. Ms. McAllister lives in a low income apartment complex where she takes care of her two children as well as other nieces and nephews. Ms. McAllister never married the father of her two children and she relies on public assistance for income. She considers herself to be a woman highly capable of caring for all the children yet she still struggles to deal with the stress of everyday financial issues. The Williams on the other hand live in a wealthier neighborhood and only have one child. Mr. W...
Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine in 1947, the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. After his parents separated when Stephen was a toddler, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother. Parts of his childhood were spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family was at the time, and in Stratford, Connecticut. When Stephen was eleven, his mother brought her children back to Durham, Maine, for good. Her parents, Guy and Nellie Pillsbury, had become incapacitated with old age, and Ruth King was persuaded by her sisters to take over the physical care of the elderly couple. Other family members provided a small house in Durham and financial support. After Stephen's grandparents passed away, Mrs. King found work in the kitchens of Pineland, a nearby residential facility for the mentally challenged.
Through her recollection, she has paved a path for me to understand that one could judge, but a mother’s action speaks louder than what one might perceive her to be. When doctors told her one thing, Beth asked other professionals for their opinion of her daughter, knowing what her daughter was capable of. Melanie was able to perform and develop well because Beth pushed for her with all her power. With this in mind, an educator must not underestimate the parent’s knowledge of their own
However, she never really experienced the actual life of living in poverty as the majority of people living in poverty experience. Barbara, an educated white women had just that on other people living in poverty, because of the color of her skin and education level that is more often than not restricted from people living in poverty. She was able and more qualified for jobs than other people living amongst the status she was playing. She also was able to more readily seek better benefits than people living in poverty. When she first start her journey in Florida she had a car, a car that in most cases people living in poverty do not have. She was also able to use the internet to find local jobs and available housing in the area that many people living in poverty are restricted from. Another great benefit she had was the luxury of affording a drug detox cleansing her of drugs deemed bad. Many people living in poverty do not have much extra cash laying around much less fifty dollars to afford a detox for prescription drugs. She also had the luxury to afford her prescription drugs, another option that many people living in poverty do not have. Another element that made Barbara’s experience not that genuine was the fact that she was not providing for anybody other than herself. Twenty-two percent of kids under the age of 18 are living below the poverty line (http://npc.umich.edu/poverty/#5) , Barbara did not have to provide for pets or kids which would of changed her experience altogether of living in poverty. Not to belittle Barbara’s experience, but many factors of what life is like living in poverty were not taken into consideration during her

They lived in Roland Park in Baltimore Maryland. Living the “Average” lifestyle in her parents’ home she felt as if she were an outsider. Morrison decided to go to Western Maryland and pursue her collegiate education. She could not take the racism that went on in 1970 and decided to uproot her life for the better. Worcester, Massachusetts is where Morrison’s life would further take its course, she finally felt at home in this city. Morrison met her closest friend Jill who would also be an important benefactor in Barbra’s life; the first thing that she explained to Morrison was “The vast majority of people on welfare were white and lived in rural areas, not inner cities” (Morrison,2011).Morrison did not understand this until she was faced with the reality of poverty. In order to survive she needed to bring in resources, which are “anything identified to meet an existing or future need” (Moore& Asay, 2013).In Morrison’s case ...
Mr. Griffin was a middle age white man who lived with his wife and children. He was not oriented to his family. He decided to pass his own society to the black society. Although this decision might help most of the African Americans, he had to sacrifice his gathering time with his family. “She offered, as her part of the project, her willingness to lead, with our three children, the unsatisfactory family life of a household deprived of husband and father” (Griffin 9). Leaving Mrs. Griffin and his children would deprive them of the care they needed. Even though he was not oriented to his family, he was full of courage. He was willing to discuss topics that people hesitated to talk about, trying new ideas that people were afraid to do. After turning back to his own skin color, he attended most media conferences and also wrote books about what he had gone through. During those interviews, Griffin was very considerate. He requested Wallace, a reporter, to report carefully so that he would not hurt his African American friends. “Please… Don’t mention those names on the air.
The amount of success that Williams achieved once seemed impossible to get to, “When he was just 11, he lost his father to tuberculosis” and the occurrence of the “death crippled the family's financial situation”(Surgeon Daniel Hale Williams; Blaze Your Path: Determination earned him a place in the world's heart." Investor's Business Daily 30).

Selfishness is one of the most common personality traits shared amongst society, Kenneth Grahame’s literature features the theme of how making rash decisions can lead to dramatic effects to those around you.
During the earlier stages of Carson’s neurosurgery career, many felt him incompetent of such work. He was deemed as one of the patients when he commenced his internship. Eventually, many came to great respect for him when experiencing his true intellect and understanding of surgery. However, when interviewing with certain parents, they would mistakenly question when Dr. Carson would be coming, despite the fact he was already there. After finishing with his consultations with the parents, it was rather coherent Dr. Carson did, in fact, have a great mastery in his field. To cope with such accidental racism, Dr. Carson simply answered questions with honest and kind responses. For example, if a parent or guardian were to ask when Dr. Carson would be coming, he would reply with a “He’s already here, I’m Dr. Carson” and a warm smile. Throughout the course of his lifetime, Ben realized the best way to cope with these happenings would be to remain good-natured, understanding, and unperturbed. He knew it was, in most cases, an accidental form of prejudice, and many meant no harm by their
People face conflicts every day of their lives. We all come across at least one incident in our lives that is challenging and we are baffled on what decision is to be made.
