The title of my poem is “Believing That You Can Do It”. Jessica Mcduffie is the author who wrote this poem. This poem is for all you cheerleaders or people who think cheerleading is not a sport when it actually is. People don't understand the work that has been put in to make us do what we have to do. The poem explains a little bit of it but not even close to all. The main idea of the poem is to show people how hard cheerleaders work and what they do to get there. They work as a team or even more like a family.

Many people might disagree but i believe it is more than a sport than some of the other ones. I think it's this theme because it states many times that they work really hard and how they do it. The theme and the hidden meaning can be the same thing in this case.
There is some literary elements in this poem as well. The ambiguity in the poem is “remember the smiles, forget the tears”. You can take this different ways. Some people could say that it means they need to remember the happy times and forget the bad ones. Others could say it means to remember to smile while cheering and don't cry. Another element is nuances but there is not really a change in the tone during this text. The complexities in this poem is beating around the bush. She does not say the meaning straight out you need to figure it out.
I have been cheerleading for almost 10 years. I started when I was 5 years old on a team in raleigh. After i left that team i went and started gymnastics. After gymnastics for awhile i took a break for a year. Then I got back into my tumbling skills. I then began to cheer for my old school. It was not that fun because my skills were higher than most. I stop cheering for them and now i'm getting back into cheer. The things mentioned in the poem are relatable and true. Cheerleading is fun! Of course we cheerlead because it’s fun! From cheer camp to laughing on the sidelines, cheerleading is always a good time, especially with your friends. The memories made my cheerleaders whether they be from practices, games, or spirit activities (like decorating for senior night or baking treats for football players) are memories that will be cherished for a cheerleaders lifetime. Cheering is such a positive and happy experience because we are always doing something fun or accomplishing something new, like learning our new pyramid or mastering our routine. It was my final moments as a Chelsea High School cheerleader. My final banquet had quickly approached. It was then that I realized I was not ready for the season to be over. I stood in front of my friends, fellow cheerleaders, and their families as they watched and waited for me to recite my last words as the season came to an end. It took hours for me to write about what my teammates and my coaches meant to me. I did not want to sound too nostalgic since I’m not the emotional type, but I also did not want to come across as indifferent. It was a difficult task but I knew I could accomplish it.
...for my first cheerleading squad, in the seventh grade, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. In fact, the try outs were so hard and so demanding I did not make the cut. This did not discourage me at all; it only gave me motive to try harder. Next season I came back with a bang; I made the cheerleading squad. Cheerleading is an experience that I would never give up for anything in the world. I learned more lessons on teamwork here than any other sport I played, because in cheerleading I mainly had to communicate with the other cheerleaders. Cheerleading involved much work and effort from me and my team mates. When I first started cheering I was a fairly fat cheerleader; by the end of the season my body was perfect enough for a show all bikini, and this is the one change that made me genuinely realize, “yes, I am an athlete; cheerleading is a sport.”
The final piece of figurative language is irony. Irony is almost a sort of mockery, or a satire. What I mean is, for example, if a person feared flying all their life, but finally decided to fly, and died in a plane crash. Irony in this poem is when he writes “scared of being outcast , afraid of common fate.” In this he says that people are afraid of being different than everybody, yet they also scared of being the same as everyone. This is irony.
Cheerleading has affected many lives in a positive way and proven that sports can help build character and change a person for the better. I have been an all-star cheerleader at Cheer Extreme all-stars for the last two years but have participated in all-star cheerleading since I was three years old. Through this sport, I have become a summit champion, triple crown champion and bronze medalist at the 2017 world championship. Long endless blue mats, cheerful girls in bows, intimidating judges. I was nine years old when I competed in my first cheer competition. All the girls on my team had competed in several other competitions. I felt alone and scared with my own thoughts, while everyone was preparing. Going out on the floor and not being prepared was a mistake. I was so distraught that I butchered the routine I knew how to do in my sleep. I realized that I had to develop my own preparation that would help me shine as bright as my teammates next time.

When I was ten, my dad took me to a high school football game to watch a friend of ours. The first thing I noticed was the cheerleaders. They were loud and proud to be there and support their school. They showed no shame, and I turned to my dad and said, “One day I’m going to be a high school cheerleader.” That dream came true in April of 2016. As I walked into the first practice, I was so nervous to finally be there. I met my new squad members, and we immediately clicked and started talking about our summer camp. We practiced and waited for it to roll around, and when it finally did, we enjoyed every moment. As we worked together and supported each other, we earned ribbons, got a bid to Florida, and grew closer together than ever before.
While my dad watched his favorite college football games, I watched my dreams come alive.
