My current belief about aging is that as I age my health will start to deteriorate. I am healthy 31-year-old woman, but I am apprehensive that I am not going to live a healthy life due to my family history. As a young adult, I have noticed that my older relative's health and mobility have declined. For instance, a simple task such as walking to the mailbox to retrieve their mail is a strenuous task. My relatives have made me fearful of aging; however, I do know it is crucial to take care of my health while I am young. For example, exercising, eating nutritious meals, and having social relationships with people are great ways to improve your health. From what I observed, there are elders who depend on programs like Meals on Wheels. Meals on
Due to the growing issue dealing with the aging baby boomers generation, gerontology has been brought into immediate attention in the health care system. We are still learning and discovering about the anonymities behind the aging processes. Aging and death is a normal stage of life, even though there is an increase in technology and knowledge that would lengthen your existence, bringing the body back to youth is not possible. As one ages it is very common for one to go through physical, psychological and mental degeneration of the body. In the gerontological setting, it is important for nurses to commit to caring and providing a good quality of life. This is done by providing a dignified death instead of simply sustaining life. In order to make this happen it is important to incorporate Jean Watson’s caritas processes into the care plan. By providing good person to person care a nurse can improve the quality of life of patients and their family members. This paper will focus on the use of caritas process number 9 in the gerontological setting to develop a healing relationship with my client, use of professional knowledge needed to assist my client in his/her needs, a nursing action that helped my client’s needs and the difference the care made to my clients healing. In the gerontological setting, “spirituality must be considered a significant factor in understanding healthy aging” (Touhy, Jett, Boscart, & McCleary, october 2011, p. 98). Gerontological nurses have to put spirituality of an older adult in priority, because as you age spirituality is very important to them and it is source of hope and helps them in adaptation of their illness. Consider how the effect of a new perspective has been reflected and developed in a literary text or texts you have studied. Discuss the ideas developed by the text creator about the effect an individual’s perspective has on personal beliefs.
How can someone in 2017 understand what was going on inside the body of an aging woman in 1972? By reading Susan Sontag’s, “The Double Standard of Aging,” an individual can comprehend what the author portrays the women of her day to be, self-conscious and apparently uncomfortable with their appearance. It is true, that women are looked at, and often treated differently than men are. For example, if a woman were to wear a dress that reveals her thigh, it would be considered, by many, to be an act of sexual behavior. However, if a man were to wear an equivalent piece of clothing (for example, shorts), no one would say anything, the simple thought one would think is that it is hot outside. Most of society would not judge the man, but
Ageism is all too common in films. While there are still so many movies packed with stereotypes that view aging as negative, there is a recent movie, which portrayed aging positively in some aspects, the movie ‘The Second Best Marigold Hotel’. While this movie does contain stereotypes and humor about aging, it also shows the visitors leading active, happy, free and independent lives. They are not portrayed as being sick or frail, but instead they are embracing life and their experiences regardless of their age.
With healthcare in the United States advancing so rapidly, there are new ways to treat just about any kind of illness every day. With being able to treat illnesses in new ways, and also the advancement of medical equipment, comes the possibility of a lot more people living up into their 90’s, and maybe even getting to reach 100. The aging population, which keeps growing every so rapidly, will be using up a lot more sources as the years go by. This means, that we need to educate more doctors and nurses, etc., and also make more living facilities for older adults. The question that comes up in my mind, is when is “old” actually”. Most people stereotypically consider ages 75 and older old, but that doesn’t mean they are actually “old”, does it?

A stereotype is defined as ‘an exaggerated and often prejudiced view of a type of person or group of people’ (Novak, Campbell, & Northcott, 2014, pg. 5). Stereotypes often develop from observations/information that tend to not be true. If they turn out to be true then they are exaggerated and distorted. Further, if someone is found who does not fit the stereotype they are considered to be an exception. Some stereotypes positively portray the elderly but most have a negative impact. This can create prejudice and discrimination towards the elderly which can negatively impact their quality of life (Novac et al., 2014).
Older adults are a very knowledgeable population and have had a lot of life experiences. As people age, things start to change physically, mentally, and socially. It’s important to understand the process of aging, so that older adults can be taken care of properly. I interviewed P.R. who is a 71-year-old male that lives alone in his home. P.R. is a retired coal miner, and is currently living off his social security and savings. He lives close to both his daughter and son, who frequently help him out with things that are needed. P.R. was able to give me a lot of insight about specific challenges that he has experienced in his life that is associated with aging. I will be discussing challenges that P.R experienced physically, mentally,
In today’s society, what was once said to be true and taken as fact regarding older people is no longer the whole story. As Laslett states, “At all times before the middle of the twentieth century and all over the globe the greater part of human life potential has been wasted, by people dying before their allotted time was up.” (1989a), and to a great extent a lot
I was surprised to learn that successful aging is a combination of physical and functional health, high cognitive functioning, and active involvement with society. It was interesting to learn that these factors could lead to a lower risk of disease and disability. As
All development is contextual meaning that development can occur in places like churches, communities, and businesses. Development can also occur within family members, group of friends or with just everyday people. Development can be influenced by three major factors: normative age-graded and normative history-graded influences and non-normative life events. These influences can have either a big or a small impact on both the individual and the individual’s environment.
Aging is universal and it is a process that everyone has to go through. The only difference is that everyone goes through this process at their own pace influenced by factors that will be discussed later on in this paper. When we think about factors that have an influence on older adults and how their life may be affected, we must consider the different social institutions while analyzing influences from social factors, cultural factors, and personal values. Abuse to older adults, stereotyping and informal care and technological advancements that affect older adults are the three topics that will be discussed in this reflection. Furthermore, will connect the three topics I have chosen to the knowledge that I have gained from my interaction
and, the individual's perception of and response to the disease. Whether in sickness or in health age and the progression through life play a large part in our health and our developmental status. The role of age in regard to health is listed below: - Most young adults are in good health and experience few limitations or disabilities. Nearly 71% of adults older than 65 living in a community report their health as excellent, good, or very good. - Health and mobility decline with age especially after age 80. Disease is more common among older adults.
What I had discovered was that the older adult considers her health and wellness relatively good compared to her peers, but she still believes that there is room for improvement. When comparing this to her younger years, she had clearly indicated that she is more conscientious of her health now that she has aged. However, she has also stated that this change is less extensive to herself compared to her husband because she has always tried to be a healthy individual due to the influence of her nursing background. I can conclude from this that her lifelong involvement and knowledge on health has most likely provided her with a more positive than negative concept of aging. This is because the toll that age has taken on her could be considered relatively laid back compared to many others in her age
After my phone conversation, I was able to meet with her in person. It was a really fruitful and a pleasant experience just as I expected. She was very friendly and open to discuss some more details I was looking for related to my project. For this interview, I decided to switch gears and ask her about her views on some big topics such as cultural diversity and how she was able to fit in as well as her adjustment towards aging. Since I already have most of the details about her first experiences moving to America and finding a profession of her choice, I decided to dive even further into that to keep the conversation going. Some of the questions that I asked her were about how much diversity she witnessed in her work environment as well as if diversity helped shape her social style in any way and what she would do to help create a more inclusive and diverse environment. She told me that it is very important to work with people who are different and that it is not just about culture and religion, but also about working with people who come from different education backgrounds and experiences.
