Being a Good Tutor
Tutoring, you think it is the easiest job that you could have. You think so because of the flexibility of time, and the only thing you need to do is be there on time to help students (Tutees) with the subject that they have difficulty understanding, which you obviously have the full knowledge about because you earned an ‘A’ or ‘B’ in earlier semesters. However, all that you were thinking is definitely wrong. The tutees don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.
There are many qualities you need to have in order to be a good tutor besides being intelligent. As Clayton College and State University Peer Tutoring Program (CCSU) mentioned in their web site, “Intelligence alone does not result in successful tutoring; more important is what kind of person you are” (Characteristics of a Good Tutor). Also, as CCSU mentioned, the tutor should have a “ Positive outlook, having a desire to help others, liking for the subject matter, open minded by accepting others points of view, having the ability to see what needs to be done and do it, understanding, and having the ability to feel what another person is feeling.”
So what do you need to do when you have an appointment with a tutee for the first time? Besides having all the personal characteristics that I mentioned earlier, you also need to know about the subject that you are going to help the tutee with before going to the appointment. Then you need to review this subject even though you are good at it because you can gather the different ideas on this subject and also analyze the information that you might have forgotten. You need to think after that about how the session with the tutee is going to be, write some notes, and be ready to answer any question your tutee might ask you. Now you are ready to meet the tutee.
When you meet the tutee, the first thing you need to do is to introduce yourself and tell him or her that you are a student, especially if that is his or her first time having a tutor. Try to be friendly in order to help the tutee lose his or her nervousness by asking the tutee how the class is going on. Use the first ten to fifteen minutes to organize, plan, and show the tutee what you are going to talk about in the session.
To be intelligent means to be able to apply what we learned in school and use what we learned in our everyday life to achieve a goals that is sit or one that we are accomplishing without knowing. Many people think that a person is intelligent because they went to a university, got a degree, and have a good paying job, so they must be smart and know everything however thats not always true. If we would ask a teacher or professor the chances of them knowing how to fix a car are slim. So why do we think teachers are so intelligent? We think teachers are intelligent because they know everything about their subjects, know how to teach it and know how to apply their knowledge to their everyday lives.
My experiences with tutoring others has taught me that it satisfies me to help others understand and learn. As you teach others you learn about the different ways you handle situations and solve issues as well. I’ve always been the person that my classmates come up to for help, but it wasn’t till grade 10 until I officially started tutoring math, mainly Pre-Calculus 12. In grade 11, I continued tutoring, but this time I focused on a single individual, and that brought up challenges of creating a suitable relationship, that becomes the foundation for effective learning. Additionally, peer tutors lead their tutees to utilize cognitive thinking skills. Finally, peer tutors assist tutees in development (pg. 4). Lipsky cited Arthur Chickering’s seven vectors of development (pg. 4). Each vector highlights areas of effective social, intellectual or personal development (pg. 4-5). Tolerance and patience are among my many qualities, which can help me deal with kids when they fail to understand a concept. In addition, I am kind and understanding towards other kids. By containing these qualities, the students would actually look forward to learning new things. Furthermore, I am an extremely encouraging tutor. Being encouraging is the most important quality that a tutor should possess. If a tutor is encouraging, the student will develop a motivation to succeed, and a tutor’s joy is to see their tutee prevail. Some kids need a different approach to academics. Schools should provide tutors if the student needs it to help them achieve more goals in the future. Having a tutor will improve a child's confidence in school work. Getting caught up will help the student with school work and maintaining educational success. The help of a tutor will make a student more likely to finish school and graduate. A tutor can help you succeed at your work and make getting a job easier.

One of the benefits of peer tutoring is that it increases communication and social skills. The tutee will feel more comfortable learning, listening, and interchanging knowledge with a peer. Working with peers can also feel easier because they will most likely understand the position they are in at school and home. I never had a teacher that I clicked with. Changing from school to school was hard and anytime I would get close to someone, I would end up changing schools. I never knew what it meant to have a teacher care about a student so much. That all changed when I moved to Delafield, Wisconsin in 2007. I started a new school in the fourth quarter and everything felt the same. All of a sudden, when seventh grade came around, I felt like a whole new person. This is the year that I met the teacher who became a part of my life. Mrs. Wroblewski has positively inspired me to follow my dreams and be who I want to be. Mrs. Wroblewski is an inspiration to me and a role model because she defended me when I was bullied, gave me great opportunities, a great listener, and is always there for me not matter what.

In other classes I master tutor, it is easier to accomplish this because they actually ask for help where as in art, the tutor has to seek out the tutee. I believe that if you were to require the tutor to teach a lesson and observe their instruction, you would be able to learn a lot on how your master tutor is helping your class. You will be able to see their weaknesses whether it is their wording, their clearness, their volume, or possible even their pace. It would be a great way to get to know you master tutor, but in the master tutor "handbook" of sorts, it says that master tutors should not do such things. On the 14th of September 2017, when I worked at the paddock for the second time, though I was lost on what to do at the beginning, I managed to do what I am supposed to do – putting the keys of the cupboard back in the following order and my partner, Sandhya was to click check out in the computer.
