Being in Upward Bound has been my greatest privilege and source of motivation. I was one of lucky 12 who was selected from my class and since we spent three summers together, we have created a powerful bond with each other. Ms. Norma, the director, has helped me grow tremendously throughout these years and she has been one of my greatest role models. During my summers in LMU, my UB peers and I were put in positions where we had to work together to solve many problems. Activities like these helped me become better at working alongside others and take the lead when needed. This mental training influenced me to become active in school by joining clubs and taking leadership positions. I learned a lot about myself by being participating in these
Education is one of the most important tools in society, that serve as a base of power to open our minds, in a relationship with the truth. According to an article called The Anatomy of Inequality, by Linda Darling Hammond, refers to an objection to the public education in the United States, and how children should be educating. Hammond points out how there was the unfairness between African American, with low social status, and also with immigrants students. Although many people may think that these problems have been results through the pass of the years, it is clear that many issues still open, and waiting for justice. One Hammond major points are based that the country was established on equality, and freedom for everyone.
With Upward Bound, this can give me a proper glimpse of what to expect as I enter into college. In less than two years, I will be graduating soon with little to no knowledge on how my dream college will be like. From how to manage my classes to being financially stable for the next four years. That can be difficult, especially for someone who is going to be independent throughout their life and might go to school away from home so they will not get the financial or emotional support they need. Despite that, Upward Bound can give me a preview of what it is like to be independent.
Where would you consider yourself with your ranking in America 's social classes, are you upper class, middle class or even lower class? This is actually very important when it come to you receiving opportunities and in a sense special treatment. I’m referring to of course social inequality which is still very much alive in America and still affects a lot of families mostly in a negative way. This problem in America has grabbed the attention of two authors, Paul Krugman who wrote “Confronting Inequality” and Gary S. Becker and Kevin M. Murphy who wrote “The Upside of Income Inequality”. However, they both have different views on inequality Krugman believes that social inequality is only negative while on the other hand, Becker and Murphy believe
The riddle of inequality, as Tillich explains, "...Cannot be solved." This inequality is the divider of people, of the have's and have-nots. It seems that this riddle has confused people since the beginning of time and was even discussed in the bible. People always wonder why some have more than others do; they wonder why this happens and how it can change. I believe that this riddle is natural and cannot be changed despite he best efforts of people.

In Rousseau’s book “A Discourse On Inequality”, he looks into the question of where the general inequality amongst men came from. Inequality exists economically, structurally, amongst different generations, genders, races, and in almost all other areas of society. However, Rousseau considers that there are really two categories of inequality. The first is called Natural/Physical, it occurs as an affect of nature. It includes inequalities of age,, health, bodily strength, and the qualities of the mind and soul. The second may be called Moral/Political inequality, this basically occurs through the consent of men. This consists of the privileges one group may have over another, such as the rich over the poor.
...lings that overcame me: it was the first time I felt as though I was important, the first time I felt as though I was a scholar, and most importantly, the first time I felt as though I belonged. I want to be an active voice on campus and in the classrooms; I want to be a role model to the diverse student body; I want to branch out with the opportunity given by GS; and most of all, I want to grow into the leader I dream to become.
The essence of progression, physical or intellectual, is often characterized by its long and winding nature. As I pursue a strong finish to my senior year in an effort to continue my educational endeavor in college, I do not only want to continue growing, but I also hope to influence others to actively do the
On May 28th, 2012, I was able to come to Portland, Oregon from Ethiopia. School wasn’t easy for me. I remember, I couldn’t understand what the teachers or the students were saying. I would cry and beg my mom to let me stay home because I felt left out at school. I usually sat in the back row to avoid questions from the teachers. However, I was fortunate to be a part of the Upward Bound program. It helped me to navigate resources and to improve my English. It was difficult to integrate into a new American culture, but I didn’t allow that to discourage me. I went after different opportunities to improve my English skills. I began to read more books, study hard, and even joined a soccer team, which gave me confidence to express myself. I
For the past two years, I’d been doing a college readiness program called upward bound. Each summer, I resided at the university of Dayton and took classes. I treated this program just as I would treat school. I wanted nothing more but to succeed and receive good grades. During the summer, I made sure that I performed to the best of my ability.
The goal is to create students that are active members of their education, students that can take part in their learning and become influential members of our society.
Throughout my education I have watched my peers force themselves to school, never having the desire to learn or wanting to be apart of the joys of education. I am proud to say that I have received the desire of learning. Learning isn’t something that is forced or pushed upon me. I have been able to learn because that's what I’ve wanted. As a student, I am proud of my achievements. I spread myself thin with work, school, and sports but I enjoy having much on my plate I like the challenge of learning in that I can learn about anything I wish. Throughout my education I have succeeded, I have been in numerous AP and honors classes through my academic career and I have also obtained academic awards with my time in school. I believe Mount Saint Joseph is going to suit me best for what I’d like to do with my future. I plan to persevere and dedicate myself to my work, MSJ has the best staff I can find that will help with this rigorous task.

I want to create lifelong memories of which I can look back on. Syracuse provides me the unlimited potential to reach any aspirations and pursue more than just my passion. The Goodman IMPRESS Program through the Whitman School of Management will provide the tools and opportunities to flourish in my area of study while giving me a sustainable competitive advantage throughout my life and career. Coming from a small town and High School, I cannot wait to dive into various clubs and organizations in the large, yet welcoming community of Syracuse
This made me step outside my comfort zone and be a leader for mt students. When I arrived, I had to help my students transition from the end of their reading instruction to our fun afternoon enrichment activities. I thought of fun games and phrases for my students to say as we made the tough transition from one activity to the next. As the students learned how to transition, I found that the classroom environment was less challenging and my students began to feel comfortable with our daily
My four years in Thomson High School Beta club has helped to condition and mold me for my life past high school. Thomson High school overall has a base line of things to offer, but through my involvement with the Beta club, I have learned traits and characteristics that will help me all throughout my life. These traits have helped me to be ready to go out into the world and achieve any goal that I will ever set for myself. With different character traits, an eagerness to achieve great things, a desire to help others, and the ability to step up and leader when it is necessary, that I have learned at THS and the Beta club, I know I can accomplish anything that is thrown at me. Because of these traits and desires, I am confident that I can achieve
