Over the course of the semester I have learned a lot about the different disciplines of love and sexuality in America. I have recognized a lot of themes throughout the semester. However, the themes that I find most important from class are to be informed about things before you make decisions and that communication is key to a healthy relationship. First of all, being informed is an important theme because in order to make good decisions in life, one needs to be informed about the situation. Being in Love and Lust has made me realize that we should be informed about our partners, about the biology aspects of love, and about birth control and contraceptives. After learning about what marriage entails, I think it is important to be informed …show more content…
This theme is significant because in today’s world, people often text, email, Facebook, and use many other forms of communication. As a result, people can get in arguments and stop talking to each other because they don’t realize their medium is at odds with their message, or the other persons “media ideology” could be different from their own (Gershon, 2010, p.18). Additionally, communication is an important theme because if we do not have good communication people can be confused and misunderstand what you are doing or want. For instance, in Papp’s article, Papp mentions how one partner often gets jealous of the other partner if they add an unknown friend on Facebook of the opposite-sex (Papp, 2012, pg. 86). If this couple would communicate to each other before assuming, they would understand that maybe the person they added on Facebook was an old friend or a family member. Instead of assuming and becoming angry right away, people need to communicate. Also, I find the theme of communication significant because if you are able to communicate with someone, you will become closer with them. In this case, I am referring to parent/child relationships. If parents and children are able to communicate, they will get along better. For example, if parents feel comfortable talking to their children, they will be able to have “the talk” with them. Eighty one percent of parents want their children to know about abstinence, pregnancy, and STD’s, but they are afraid to communicate with them (class notes, 11/20/2014). All in all, communication is so important because if people would communicate in a correct manner, they could have a happy, healthy relationship like the couple in my visual
"They turn casually to look at you, distracted, and get a mild distracted surprise, you're gone. Their blank look tells you that the girl they were fucking is not there anymore. You seem to have disappeared.(pg.263)" In Minot's story Lust you are play by play given the sequential events of a fifteen year old girls sex life. As portrayed by her thoughts after sex in this passage the girl is overly casual about the act of sex and years ahead of her time in her awareness of her actions. Minot's unique way of revealing to the reader the wild excursions done by this young promiscuous adolescent proves that she devalues the sacred act of sex. Furthermore, the manner in which the author illustrates to the reader these acts symbolizes the likeness of a list. Whether it's a list of things to do on the weekend or perhaps items of groceries which need to be picked up, her lust for each one of the boys in the story is about as well thought out and meaningful as each item which has carelessly and spontaneously been thrown on to a sheet of paper as is done in making a list. This symbolistic writing style is used to show how meaningless these relationships were but the deeper meaning of why she acted the way she did is revealed throughout the story. Minot cleverly displayed these catalysts in between the listings of her relationships.
Communications generally occur in body languages: how the individuals interpret each other. Her essay is an event that is reoccurring more and more lately. The event results in a failure in marriage. In today’s society more and more people are splitting up or having divorces due to miscommunications. The essay, “Sex, Lies and Conversation,” that Deborah Tannen wrote is much use of today because it explains where miscommunications happen and she has her own studies and research to back it up. The essay goes into depth about her ideologies that cause miscommunications. Look at a miscommunication twice and do not be quick to judge because it will save plenty of
Infatuation is love which is self-indulgent, obsessive and irrational. It causes people to lose their self-control and perspective. It is often a product of the senses, which is of physical infatuation rather than mental compatibility, thus it is appropriate for Oberon's love potion to be applied to the eyes which is the strongest senses a person depends on to view the world.
In part one, Petersen paints a picture of how he became interested in the topic of communication. He also describes major problems that all communicators have in common. Since he grew up in an environment full of communication deficiencies, it drove him to clarify issues that were common to all communicators. One of the foundational concepts to Petersen’s book is the nature of communication. Petersen called communication the lubrication designed to keep functions of stomach, heart, and head working separately and together. The stomach is the source of feeling words, the heart is the source of perspective words, and the head is the source of our perception of facts. Without these three elements working together, communication becomes deficient. In my experience and understanding how this concept of thinking and feeling affects mine and others people relationships goes a long way towards reducing disagreement and disconnection.
“You know that when I hate you, it is because I love you to a point of passion that unhinges my soul.” –Julie de Lespinasse.
Fairies, mortals, magic, love, and hate all intertwine to make A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare a very enchanting tale, that takes the reader on a truly dream-like adventure. The action takes place in Athens, Greece in ancient times, but has the atmosphere of a land of fantasy and illusion which could be anywhere. The mischievousness and the emotions exhibited by characters in the play, along with their attempts to double-cross destiny, not only make the tale entertaining, but also help solidify one of the play’s major themes; that true love and it’s cleverly disguised counterparts can drive beings to do seemingly irrational things.

8). This dependency on communication is called discourse dependency and is important because it allows families to communicate their identity in the face of the unreliability of “looking like a family.” Furthermore, discourse dependency uses communication to define what it means to be a family. There are defined roles, responsibilities, rules and resources, a shared history and future among people, and an emotional bond or affection (Afifi, lecture). In the past, I did not think my family focused much on how we communicated who we were to outsiders due to how similar we look to one another and the strong sense of family that my parents instilled in my siblings and me through the mandatory nightly dinners of my childhood. However, about three years ago that changed slightly when Kevin became a part of my family. There wasn’t one moment when Kevin just became a part of my family, it was something that was gradual. Kevin first communicated he was a part of our family when he said “love you” to my mom and his attendance at Monday-Wednesday night dinners in the summer. I think it became “official” for him during Christmas time two and a half years ago when my mom embroidered him a stocking similar to my family members stocking with his name on it like the ones that my family hangs up every year. Furthermore, by labeling Kevin as my brother, my family is viewing him through the role
Only 40% of American families still sit at the dinner table and eat together at least 3 times or less out of a week. Technology is causing families to communicate less. When is the last time you saw a family eating together without any technology at the dinner table? It’s not just affecting families it’s also affecting others. We would rather e-mail or send someone a text, what happened to face to face conversations? Benjamin Painter is a man who lost his wife because of Facebook. Painter stated “I knew she was going to lose interest but Facebook made her lose it faster.” This is a part of lack of communication, if we didn’t have technology Printer might still have his wife. If they had face to face conversations maybe they would have worked through their problems, for better or worst remember? We would avoid face-to-face communication because we would rather send an e-mail or a text message. Technology is helping us communicate faster. Why sit down to have a long conversation when you can send a text message in less than 5 minutes? Zucchini was using Facetime when he got home to show his wife he didn’t buy the wrong vegetables this time. “I have learned there are so many smart ways that technology has allowed us to communicate more quickly and efficiently” (Zucchini). He took his niece to Detroit to a concert and he sent a text message to his sister
In "The Love Potion" the author uses a special potion to make people fall in love. The author in "The Goodness of St. Rocque" potrayal of love is through the spirit. Both authors are reaching their goals of showing love in their stories. They also have different potrayal's of love .
Theories of Communications, is a course that allowed me to further gain a far better perspective and has also broadened my understanding and knowledge of some of the major theories. I appreciate the fact, that during the course of the semester, this class really did an admirable job introducing me to a variety of well known and widely studied theories in the communication feild. One of the biggest things I took out of this class, was how the class impled me to learn how to apply some of the theories to my life in a practical way through some of the class activities, readings, group work, presentations, and assignments. In the following paper, there will be three main things I will be covering. I will start off by introducing all members of my family, and describing a little bit about them individually. I will then be talking about the five theories I selected that I can applyto myself and my family. I will then describe each of the five theories, give an example of my own families experiance that aplies to the theories, and give an analysis of the experiance using the theory. And lastly, I will share with you my conclucion, which will conclude basically all of the things that I learned through writing this paper.
Willard Harley’s theme is introduced in the introduction and chapter 1, his purpse is to have marriage relationships learn how to meet each other needs (Harley, 15). Chapter 1 shares the expectations of the relationship and how to build an affair-proof marriage in the process (Harley, 17). In chapter 2 he describes his theory of how each person in the marriage can deposit or withdraw love from the “Love Bank”, indicates that this bank should never close. Everyone has a love system that is worth an assured amount of love units. The goal is the have each person stop making withdrawals, but in its place build up deposits with a treasure of love units together (Harley, 24). The next four chapters explains the two most importance needs of
The article Falling in Love consisted of vital information about love and relationships. The article states that the falling in love experience is not real love for three reasons. The first reason is falling in love in not an act of the will or a conscious choice. Second, falling in love is not real love because it is effortless. And third, one who is “in love” is not genuinely interested in fostering the personal growth of the other person.
Before moving on, one must know that sex education is about, but not limited to the discussion of sexual intercourse. As a Buzzle article states, it involves a multitude of topics that introduce human sexual behaviors such as puberty, sexual health, sexual reproduction, sexuality, and more (Iyer). If formally received in school, these topics are brought up and discussed at age-appropriate times over the course of children’s junior high and high school education. Moreover, as I have introduced earlier, the way sex education should be taught is divided into two approaches. It is between taking either a conservative, abstinence-only approach or a more liberal, comprehensive approach. Abstinence-only education, approaches students by stressing the importance of “no sex before marriage” as be...
To figure out the ways to make someone fall in love with you, it seems important to understand why we fall in love. But, the truth is that everyone seems to fall in love for very different reasons. One person may see someone sitting on a bus and fall in love with them while another person may need months to get to know someone before they start to fall in love with them. And to make it worse, science is showing that there are very superficial things that determine whether someone is going to fall in love with you or not.
