It is safe to say that every athlete has been put in a situation that they were not exactly prepared for. But it is the lessons that are learned from those situations that determine what kind of athlete they will become. Because most teams will not be expecting an unplanned situation to occur, being a versible athlete is an important quality to obtain. When an athlete or a person is put in a position that requires oneself to step up, responsibility, teamwork and motivation must be required to gain success. April 28th, 2015 is a day that I will forever remember. The end of track season was approaching as my team and I were headed to Lubbock, Tx to compete in the regional track meet. on our way to compete in the Regional track meet. at Fuller Field which is located in Lubbock, Tx. I got the privilege to go to the meet that day because my 400 time was fast enough to compete on the mile relay. Unfortunately, I was the youngest out of the six girls so I was put as an alternate. four with two alternates that are just as prepared to run as the girls running, in case of an injury or another serious event. Each person on the team runs a 400, which is one lap around the track. That morning was particularly stressful because it was not like the other meets I was the only underclassman so I had to follow the other girls around and do what they told me too. My main goal was to be responsible and make sure I was where I needed to be when I needed to be there. I did not want to mess up because I was trying to impress my coach and teammates to hopefully earn a permanently spot on the team. The start of the 100 hurdle was about to begin, Carmen Sitz, a senior on my team was about to compete. As soon as the gun was shot she was up and racing right through the first, second, third hurdle and then a sudden stop as she fell to the ground. She broke her leg and could not manage to even finish the race. This was my time, it was my time to step up and show them what I was capable of. I was nervous and anxious but I knew I had to do this for my team. I needed to do the best I possibly could to earn my spot and now I was motivated and ready to race. At every meet the mile relay is the last event, all fans, coaches, and players would not miss this event even if they had to because it is unbelievable competitive. Warm up time has approached and I complete the entire warm up jamming out to Eminem and I am pumped. My adrenaline is rushing and my stomach is whirling. Before entering the track coach Baca pulled me aside and told me, “This is your time to shine, this is your race and you are going to do amazing. Don’t be too nervous just stay calm and remember to always turn left. Go get’em bud.” The time has begun, the gun is shot and the race begins.
As I watch Hannah Yerby race down the track I see she is in first. Being second leg I had to keep the lead. The thoughts running through my head were unspeakable, what if I messed up and dropped the baton, what if I tripped and couldn't finish. I had no more time to think negative, the baton is handed to me and I am off. I hear absolutely nothing, I can not see anything but the track ahead of me and the girls to the left of me. This is what I have been dreaming of for years now, and it is finally happening, I am where I want to be. Coming into the the exchange zone ready to hand the baton off to Katie Beth, I held the lead. Screaming at the top of my lungs, I realized I just broke my personal record. “STICK” I yell as I pass the baton to Katie Beth and before I knew it Brittney was off, when she came down the home stretch, I jumped for joy, we made it, we did it. We take home the win today and state here we
come. This experience was breathtaking, I have not felt so much happiness and this was the day that made a huge difference in my life. We got to run at state and it changed my outlook on track forever. Now I am looking into running in college because at one meet I felt successful enough that I want to take that success up to the next level. When an athlete is put in a unnormal situation and they succeed it changes the outlook they have for that sport for the rest of their athletic career.

As Paige and I walked across the field towards our team I felt euphoric. Four long years of work, sweat, and dedication had led up to this night. It was the perfect end to my senior year of softball. The scoreboard just beyond the mass of sweaty, screaming softball players read 15-0. This was the final score of the district championship game, a game my team had never won before. Perseverance, dedication, and discipline, these are the qualities that have been instilled in me throughout my training. My sport requires failing repeatedly until consistency is found in perfection. Therefore, perseverance proved crucial as I attempted skill progressions and difficult routines. Dedication was essential whenever I watched others miss practice for social events. I didn’t recognize the immediate benefits of my deep rooted commitment until months and years later; now I have applied this devotion to every aspect of my life.
Becoming an athletic trainer takes long hours of hard work and practice. When becoming an athletic trainer you need to at least a bachelor degree and must be licensed (bls.gov). A four year college is best for an athletic trainer, they will need lots of practice and experience with helping people to get their bachelor degree. You must pay extra attention in science and health classes in high school to be prepared for what classes you have to take in college. The start of the 2002 track season found me concerned with how I would perform. After a disastrous bout with mononucleosis ended my freshmen track season, the fear of failure weighed heavily on my mind. I set a goal for myself in order to maintain focus and to push myself like nothing else would. My goal for my sophomore track season was to become a state champion in the 100 meter hurdles. I worked hard everyday at practice and went the extra mile, like running every Sunday, to be just that much closer to reaching my goal. The thought of standing highest on the podium in the center of the field, surrounded by hundreds of spectators, overcame my thoughts of complaining every time we had a hard workout. When I closed my eyes, I pictured myself waiting in anticipation as other competitors names were called out, one by one, until finally, the booming voice announced over the loudspeaker, "...and in first place, your 2002 100 meter hurdle champion, from Hotchkiss, Connie Dawson." It was visions like these that drove me to work harder everyday.
As the first meet neared, things were going well. I made it onto the 4x100 team making me the third fastest kid on the team. The other members of the relay were Jason Schmidt, Jeremy Willard and Rodney Schmidt. Jason and Jeremy were both the top dogs and Rodney and I were second from the bottom of the barrel.
A lot of times, sports seem like a contest of physical skill― a test to see who is the fastest or strongest, who has the best eye or the most endurance, who can jump the highest or can handle the ball the best. What a lot of people don’t know is that there is so much more to a sport than just the muscle and coordination. In order to excel in a sport, an athlete requires a lot of self-discipline, concentration, and self-confidence. It’s the mental factor that makes a difference. Former Olympic gold medal-winning decathlon runner Bruce Jenner once said, “You have to train your mind like you train your body” (Gregoire 1). Success or failure depends on the mental factors just as much as the physical ones. The training of the mind of an athlete is called sports psychology. The use of sports psychology has a huge impact upon an athlete’s performance. The mental skills of a sport are just as important as the physical skills. All professional athletes use sports psychology. “If they aren’t currently using it, it’s almost guaranteed they’ve used it in the past, even if they are unaware they have” (Davis, Stephens, The Exploratorium 129). It’s hard to find an experienced athlete who hasn’t used sports psychology, because without it, they probably wouldn’t be where they are. The use of sports psychology is a crucial step to becoming a successful athlete.
In sports, there are three distinct types of players. Firstly, there are those who really don't care about winning the game or about winning in general. Secondly, there are those casual players that would like to win, but they don't treat the game too seriously. Thirdly, there are those who play only to win and will settle for nothing less. Going into the first race we had not expected much since Susan and I had never run this type of race. There were so many crucial things that we had to remember. As most athletes know, this goal is not possible without becoming one joined team rather than a bunch of individuals. During the semester, I learned a lot on how to deal with psychological distress and how as an athletic trainer I should deal with athletes to overcome their situation and be there for them. Throughout my time as an athletic training student, I always liked to observe my preceptors on how they deal with athletics that are having psychological distress after injuries, and how as an athletic trainer I should handle these situations in a professional manner. There is one situation in particular that occurred during the King’s College football season that I would like to discuss.
