Being 4'11 comes with many challenges. I constantly get used as an armrest, get asked things such as, "How's the weather down there?", and "Can you even see over the steering wheel?" Even though my height has prevented me from reaching many things, it has not prevented me from reaching my goals. Being different has always pushed me to excel; When I was twelve years old, I first learned how to use my height to my advantage. I was playing soccer during a tournament and my coach put me in to play. The other team took one look at me and automatically assumed they could get past me, little did they know they were in for a battle. From that point on I never stood down to any situation, I kept training to improve and I continued to not let others
underestimate my abilities. Nonetheless, that wasn't the first time my hard work has paid off, at school I would spend myriad amount of time studying and practicing to make a name for myself. Pursuing the career of my dreams is what I strive for; the journey towards it might be tough, but I aspire to push through any obstacle no matter what. UCF says, "reach for the stars", and I intend to do just that. Even though I can't reach the top shelf, or may need a stool every once in a while, I am nothing short of confident that I could contribute to the UCF community in more ways than one.
1 It was a cold March night in 1980 in China. There was only Tyler Day, TJ Paul, 2 and Lauren Day at the movie. It was late at night, when Tyler, TJ, and, Lauren were 3 leaving from the movies. They decided to play hide n seek after watching the movie 4 Friday The 13th. The three of them split up, and they all had night vision goggles so 5 they didn't hit any trees. Lauren volunteered as tribute to be it, but that was kinda 6 weird because she is never it first in any game they played with people.
As I walked into class on my opening day of 1st grade in a new school, I knew something was different about me. I looked around to see all my peers who were quite normal and polite, but there was just something off. I soon realized this was my height when I overheard the nicknames “Tree,” “Giraffe,” and my personal favorite “The Statue of Liberty.” As though my first day of school was not tough enough, my teacher pulled me to the side and began to talk to me about advanced education. Word spread like wildfire, as fast as it can in a rural elementary school, and now I was not only the girl who towered over her class but also the nerd. How lucky I was. Entering the jungle of a cafeteria was my next task. Kindergarteners screamed and ran around
Opponents may argue If players want to play in the competitive level like the NBA then players need to be tall enough because the game is easier if players are closer to the basket. However practicing shooting the ball in game situations will make you better at putting the ball in the basket. Using your shortness to your advantage
After playing three years in the recreational league, I naively believed that my stud-like skills were needed for bigger and better things. Unfortunately, no one told me that I would be the shortest girl at the travel team tryout, by at least 5 inches. Needless to say, I did not make the cut; however, that did not stop me from trying out again, and again, and again. I could not wrap my 11-year-old mind around why I was not qualified to earn a spot on the team. I was the go-to-girl in the recreational league. Heck, I was voted MVP every year.
how to take control of my life and turn it around even if my mom wouldn’t be there to help, I had to learn to be more responsible and do things on my own.
Height is an important key measure in society. Most people will associate taller individuals as being a leader. A taller person may not have the right qualities to becoming a leader, but amongst others the tallest person will be recognized and recommended as a leader based on their height. Shorter people have a lack of authority when it comes to leadership. Being below eye level with someone could make a person feel less respected in the eyes of another. I believe the idea of looking down to someone already gives a person that sign of uncontrolled
It has been a challenge for me, a 5-foot-1 woman, to try and prove myself in a field dominated by men. I am optimistic that I have earned a little respect, due to the fact
Out of the nine barriers, I chose determination. In all ten years I have been in school I strive to make the best grades I can in every subject. It was my freshman year in high school and I was so excited to be in the new environment. Everyone had always bragged about how much fun and freedom you get being in high school. What I was not prepared for was the high school courses I was about to take. I did not take all honors, seminar, and so on, I just wanted to get the feel of high school
When I was younger, I always wanted to be different from the rest. I wanted to do something greater, something that not
My topic is on height as it relates to the accuracy of successful free throw shots. After thinking about creative ways to get my children to do chores I came up with a quick challenge for them. Whoever can make the most, free throws would be exempt for weekly chores. They were excited and then thought the odds weren’t fair because they are shorter than I am. Which leads me to the question of does height matter? In this report, you will see data that shows the accuracy of successful free throw shot attempts from various heights. I will use pie charts and bar chart to record my results.
When I was in ninth grade, I tried out and made the freshmen basketball team. Spending almost the entire season on the bench was not an enjoyable experience. While my spirit to play was strong, my height of 5'2" was an impediment. The next year I decided to try bowling instead of putting myself through another year of warming the bench. Bowling is an equal opportunity sport, where it doesn't matter if you're short, fat, or even deaf, dumb, and blind. It is the only sport I know of that you can eat french fries and play cards during practice. Bowling matches and practices are always fun as we never have to do strenuous wind sprints and no one ever gets injured. My teammates and I get to relax and have fun.
There are many things that have molded me into the person I am today such as being born into a family with four children. With three siblings, I have been forced to be able to work out problems from stealing each other’s toys to having to rush to the emergency room to get stiches because my brother chased me around the house and I tripped. My mother, father, brother, and two sisters were all born in Pennsylvania and I am the odd ball and I was born in Adrian, Michigan. From when I was a child I always loved being involved with sports because of my competitive nature. I grew up playing soccer and having success with that but then my love changed and I began playing lacrosse and football. I started playing lacrosse in middle school and played
