According to the articles, the implementation of bedside report for 3 years was done in med-surg units in Tacoma General Hospital in Washington. Nurses and manager should work together as team. Nurse’s survey was done to find out if nurses are getting and giving enough information and if nurses doing report on time. The unit’s Press Ganey score was used before and after implementation of bedside report. Other measuring outcomes that involved were evaluating call light use during shift change and rapid response to calls, end of shift overtime and patient complaints. In this study there was no statistical information is available related to actual outcomes of bedside shift report compare to traditional shift report.

The adoption of clinical information systems is one way that healthcare organizations are making an effort to improve patient safety, provide a means to exemplify regulatory compliance, and facilitate exchange of patient information between care providers (Kirkley & Stein, 2004; Nadzam, 2009). To achieve this goal, Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH) recently implemented a new CPOE/clinical documentation system. One of the objectives of the new system was to give bedside clinicians a standardized electronic tool, known as the Clinical Summary, for bedside shift hand-off reporting. Soon after go-live, it was identified that the standard nursing Clinical Summary did not meet specialized the reporting needs of the nurses on the Women and Infants divisions. Consequently, an application enhancement request was submitted. The goal of this project is to synthesize the knowledge gained throughout this Masters Degree program to initiate, plan, and execute changes to the current clinical documentation system to provide a standardized Clinical Summary review screen to meet the specialized hand-off reporting needs of the nurses on the Women and Infants divisions at BJH. This paper includes project objectives, a supporting evidence-based literature review, project methodology, formative and summative evaluation criteria, and a graphical timeline with a narrative description for the Women and Infants Clinical Summary project.
“A healthcare provider’s bedside manner encompasses their medical knowledge, personality, and ability to understand the patient and communicate their concern for them.” (Britt). Although some individuals don’t see the importance of communication and emotional connection with patients in the medical field, doctors who have problems properly interacting with their patients will have a lower chance of success in healing them. Doctors receive so much education but are never taught proper bedside manners, which is the way that physicians interact with patients. In order to ensure a patient’s comfort, psychological well-being, and physical health, a physician must truly understand their patient.
Over the past years, there has been a nursing shortage which has led to the need of more registered nurses in the hospital setting. This is the result of higher acuity of patient care and a decrease in their length of hospital stay. In order for the patients to get safe and quality care, the staffing, education and experience of the nursing staff needs to be made a priority. Firstly, Nurses must develop the right communication tools when dealing with their patients. For example most nurses do bedside reporting, before they change their shift in the morning, therefore they would be relaying information to the other nurse about the patient they dealt with during the night.
