“ Becoming a Stronger Person”
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a story about a Black female growing up in the American South during the 1930’s and 40’s. Maya Angelou, the narrator and author of this book, writes about growing up in a society filled with racism and hatred. From rape to racism, Maya Angelou has experienced an immense amount of hardships and grievances her whole life. Through these experiences, Maya learns the true meaning of courage, independence, and trust; she realizes that the hardships and various experiences in one’s life can only make that person stronger in the end.
As a child, Maya was a very quiet and passive girl who rarely spoke her mind. When she was younger, a couple of “powhitetrash” girls went into her grandmother’s store and harassed her. Maya was so scared that all she could do was curl herself up into a small corner and start crying; unable to stick up to those girls. However, her sudden development of courage is exemplified when she goes to visit her father in California. Maya gets into an argument with her father’s girlfriend, Dolores, and apparently, Dolores ends up calling Maya’s mother a whore. The “new” Maya, filled with anger, responded by slapping Dolores across the face. The small, reticent child had turned into a courageous, young woman.
In the early years of her life, Maya had always been pretty dependent on her grandmother or brother. However, when she got older, she realized that she needed to do something on her own. As a result, she went out and found herself a job. Being a black girl, finding a job was not simple, but she managed without giving up. Her sedulous work granted her the position as the first black trolley conductor in San Francisco. She had succeeded independently and did not give up without putting up a fight.
Maya’s one month stay in the junkyard taught her how to trust again. After the rape incident, Maya became very insecure and kept to herself most of the time. However, in the junkyard, she built a special camaraderie with her fellow run-away friends and was able to trust again. The open acceptance by her peers wiped away the feeling of insecurity that she had felt for such a long time. They initiated her into “the brotherhood of man”. They accepted Maya for the person she was inside; completely disregarding the color of her skin.
Angelou well known as an entertainer was urged by James Baldwin and by the cartoonist Jules fifer and his wife Judy to try her hand at writing an autobiography. After several refuels she agreed the results was a unique series of autobiographical narratives. I know why the caged bird sings is the first of Maya Angelous's five autobiographies. Maya indeed silent mute she cannot will speak. The silent Maya is returned to momma Henderson though reaming speech less for five years until she recovers her voice through patient help of her grandmother's friend Mrs. bertha flowers.(Lupton 52).
The novel, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", by Maya Angelou is the first series of five autobiographical novels. This novel tells about her life in rural Stamps, Arkansas with her religious grandmother and St. Louis, Missouri, where her worldly and glamorous mother resides. At the age of three Maya and her four-year old brother, Bailey, are turned over to the care of their paternal grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. Southern life in Stamps, Arkansas was filled with humiliation, violation, and displacement. These actions were exemplified for blacks by the fear of the Ku Klux Klan, racial separation of the town, and the many incidents in belittling blacks.
She is the one that refuses to oblige to societal orders. She is the “Shadow-Beast” (38) with “Chicana identity grounded in the Indian woman’s history of resistance” (43). Although alienated physically, Anzaldua is “immobilized” (43) mentally the more confined she becomes in a culture engulfed in pure oppression. She claims her “shadow-beast” as the depiction of her highly wanted independence as an individual human being, which eventually forces her to leave her family behind to find herself separately from the “intrinsic nature buried under the personality that had been imposed” (38) for people like Anzaldua for many years. Her push for rebellion sets a voice for the silenced anger and pure resistance against the ostracism of herself, her family, culture, and the white-washed society she has been born into. To be the only Chicana, lesbian, and rebellious woman in her family is considered sinful, as women, according to Anzaldua, in Mexico only have “three directions she could turn: to the church as a nun, to the streets as a prostitute, or to the home as a mother” (39). Noticing that women are culturally restricted to these roles, Anzaldua creates the opposite role for herself claiming to take the “fourth choice” by “entering the world by way of education and career and becoming self-autonomous persons,” (39), which she uses to her advantage to transform the prolonged oppression into her long awaited freedom to live as an openly queer woman

By the end of the first book, Maya ends up being a high school graduate, so she has the mindset as most teens in high school (possibly more mature because she has a child). This puts her in the position as many of her readers. This goes without saying---at that age no one completely knows who he/she is, but it is possible to learn about oneself. Sexual abuse and Racism clouded the natural healthy development of Angelou. People go through things in their lives that to them seems like the worst thing imaginable. It is reassuring to know that people can still find themselves despite their circumstances, as Angelou shows to her
In the preface, Maya realizes that she differs from white people. She compares the implications of being aware of that knowledge to having a razor at her throat. Maya chooses a razor because a razor near a throat is dangerous and potentially deadly. In addition, she also feels that she does not fit in with the rest of the black people in her community because she longs to be white, never talks with a Southern accent, and loathes the traditional Southern black food. Knowing that she is different makes Maya uncomfortable and lowers her self-esteem by reminding her constantly that she does not belong in the South.

The first main event in the story is when Nurzhan gets in trouble for fighting. He stood up to a bully that had been bullying him for a while. Even Though he was standing up for himself, he still got suspended and was in trouble at home. After that, Maya got caught in the arms of her crush, Daniel. At home, both her parents scolded her for what she did. Both Parents did not talk to their kids at all. Not too long after Maya was caught, Maya’s mom hurt her leg. Whether advertisements are shown on one of the millions of websites on the internet, placed in a local newspaper, shown on the television between a person’s favorite programs, written above a neighborhood in the sky by a plane, or on a billboard near a busy freeway, people are exposed to hundreds of them on a daily basis through various forms of mediums. In the essay “Advertising Appeals” written by Michael Solomon, Greg Marshall, and Elnora Stuart, several different tactics are listed that advertisements use to get viewers to think about and remember their product. While advertisements have formed a lasting impact on culture, it is entirely reasonable to label it as a negative influence on human life, considering
Maya is the only artist represented among the slum that is not angry, but rather curious as to what prospects this will open for her art, as well as the colony’s credibility and representation. But whatever the state of mind may be among the three there seems to be one commonality. They are trying to do the very thing Rahman spoke of: nurture their precious God given gifts and enable them to expand. Except it’s during these meetings, arguments and conversations where we feel the absence of what the film so beautifully opened with. Instead of the slow motion sequence that forced us to watch the art unfold in a new and appreciated way with images of dancing puppets, tight rope performances and acrobats picking needles up with their eyes, we now see the distressed artists sitting in apprehension, waiting to what role their art will play, if any at
People may not agree on whether advertising has a negative or positive effect on teens, but they do agree that teens are targeted in the advertisement world. Teens see so much advertising that some do not even notice it because there is so much of it. Because of how easy it is to reach teens and the amount of money in the teen marketplace, advertisers will continue to focus on them. Advertisers try to discover early on teen’s likes and wants. They hope to influence the teens while the teens feel that they influence the marketplace and ultimately have the freedom of choice and buying power.
What is greed? Greed can be defined where an individual is selfish and only think of the power and wealth that comes after it. This can be related to science because of a process called natural selection. Charles Darwin 's theory, which says that organisms best adapted to their environment are more likely
Greed is so powerful in a person that it has the ability to destroy them, their friends, and family relationships. I have lived in the poorest country my first nine years, so when I was adopted, my mom gave me everything I ever wanted, everything I ever needed. However, using myself as an example, I was so mesmerized of the materialistic things that were available, that I stole. I took something that was not mine because I felt greedy. I felt like I needed that object for whatever reason. My mom tore my butt when I got home and I never thought of steeling because of my own selfish need of wanting. Not to mention how greed made me afraid. It made me afraid because I knew what I did was wrong. People are constantly being bombarded with images of things that we believe will make us happy and the selfish thoughts of greed makes us wanting more. For example, the iPhone 6 Plus came out September of 2015, now there is iPhone 7 which has new camera zoom, ear pods, and better quality. However, the week before it was released, everyone talked about wanting it because it’s the new “cool” thing. However, what people fail to understand is that the reason they want
