Recommended: Life after high school
Throughout my high school career, I have participated in many volunteer opportunities especially involving the care of children. Now that I will be completing high school this May, I feel as if I should broaden my horizons and explore my interests. I absolutely love working with children and over the years, I have volunteered with many summer camps for various aged children. I am excited about the idea of becoming a camp counselor and engaging children in various fun-filled and educational
Deciding to become a Student Guidance Counselor was not a fly by night decision. I did a great deal of reading and research before making a decision. I knew once I started a graduate program in School Guidance Counseling, it would be both challenging and a commitment until the end. I am somewhat nervous about this new journey that I am about to partake; however, I am ready to accept the challenge and make the commitment. I am a newly licensed teacher and there will be areas and terminology which I am not familiar. But, what I have found out thus far is that a teacher and a student counselor have quite a few things in common. They both work with other teachers, parents, school administrators, and the community in an academic setting. The skills I have acquired as a preschool director and teacher will be integrated into my career as a guidance counselor. I will have the skills to guide and enhance the social, academic, and personal growth of my students by using a variety of strategies which will be my primary goal. I will be able t...
Camping is a fun activity for friends and family, that’s the time where they share their memories, and also make new ones. On the other hand, camping is when people are trying to stay off the rain, and wild animals form attacking them. That’s when camping is a time their lives depends on it. The article “Camping for their lives” by Scott Bransford talk about small and big cities that is over populated with homeless citizens. The article talks about what is happening in the scene, and what they have to face each and everyday order to survive.
As I began to read Davis and Meier's (2011) The Elements of Counseling, I was immediately intrigued by the title of Chapter Five, “Counselor, Know Thyself”. In the title, I made intuitive connections with many important concepts imbedded in Philosophy. As an example, In Plato’s Phaedrus (2003), the master protagonist, Socrates, explains to Phaedrus that he has no time to explain trivial things, “…and the reason, my friend, is this: I am not yet able as the Delphic inscription has it, to know myself; so it seems to me ridiculous, when I do not yet know that, to investigate irrelevant things.” As I reflect on the handout Competencies in Professional Counseling and Related Human
The Career I decided to do my research on is a Child, Family, and School Social workers. I choose this career because it is of interest to me. I really enjoy a job where I can work with and help those who are in need. Earlier in the school year I took a career test in the school’s career center and this is a job that showed up and is part of the reason I am taking the time to look at what is required of the job.
It was so nice to be back at Discovery, for my third summer volunteering. It hadn’t felt like summer until I walked into the door and saw all the preschoolers. This year it was very different from the past 2 years because there were so many new kids and only about four from the last summer. The kids were all very excited to meet me and were very welcoming. It was nice to see some of the same teachers, but there were new teachers as well. All the kids came up to me to find out my name and to ask if I was a new teacher. I especially loved it when I introduced myself to one of the kids and he responded “Kalala, that’s a silly name”. It was amazing to watch the kids playing and learning and having the chance to watch how they interact with one another. They’re so nice
Volunteering made me find my career plan in sociology / Social Worker. With a college degree in one of these areas, I hope to impact my community in ways. First, with the knowledge from college, I hope to counsel with young people& adults. In today's society, there are so many negative things that influence adults & young people. I want to help them understand the importance of setting goals and striving to become great citizens. I also want to give them a sense of hope that with perseverance, they can become great role models for other adults &young people by
My mom would always tell me, “Make each moment count. Sometimes you will never know the true value of a moment till it becomes a memory.” I have tried to live this idea and appreciate every moment of life as it comes at me. 2016 was no different. In the year 2016, I have attended school 3,000 miles away from home, moved to a new states, been to 16 new states, seen the Atlantic ocean and so much more amazing things. As this year comes to a close it is sad to see it all turn into another memory. Then I remind myself to be happy to have lived it. Looking back on such an eventful year, the highlights were not these quick moments that were here and then they were gone. My highlights have been a bunch of little moments that turn into big moments.
The Canadian Residential School system has left a lasting legacy on multiple generations of First Nations people across the country. Even in their old age, they are still affected by the efforts of the Department of Indian Affairs to assimilate the First Nations people into the new settler’s society. Cecile Kelto provided a first-hand account of what occurred within the walls of schoolhouse, and while it is quite emotional, she may not the picture that one many hope for as she believes that she ‘had it better’ than others that she went to school with . Her interview is still an important, though, as it shows that so much more was going on than just physical and sexual abuse because she was still traumatized by other factors that are identified
Having spent the better part of six summers hiking, cooking, orienteering, and practicing archery on the trails of Huddart Park, California, summer camp became a very precious time of my life. When I entered high school, I began working as a Unit Aide at my camp which meant I had the privilege to now teach young girls a whole slew of tasks such as survival skills, first aid, and knife skills. While attending Woodside Priory High School, I heard about similar activities such as archery and overnights that Mountain Camp counselors hosted. Chris Gregory encouraged me to look into the camp and see if it was something I might take interest in, and I soon discovered that it definitely captured my attention. I adore working with kids and would especially
Ever since my freshman year of high school I have known that I want to work somewhere in the health field, but not as a nurse or doctor. One day during my sophomore year, we had a Pediatric Occupational Therapist come do a presentation in my health science career class and right away I fell in love with the idea of playing with children
"Hey, be careful and don't do anything stupid," my dad said to me right before I hopped into Chase Miller's dark blue Chevy S-10 with a camper shell on the back. I looked at Chase and Tyler Becker and said, "Let's go camping." As Chase pushed down the gas pedal, a big cloud of black smoke shot out of the back of the truck and the smell of burning motor oil filled the cab.
A counselor is defined as a person trained to give guidance on personal, social, or psychological problems. Professional counselors help to identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional or social interruptions. Counseling also improves communication, strengthens self-esteem, and promotes behavior change in relations to mental health. Counseling enables us to appreciate how we are in healthy relationships and safe environments due to some of the bad things others experience. Counseling helps clients understand and clarify their views on life and learn to reach their goals through making wise choices. In most counseling situations, the client is experiencing personal issues such as low self-esteem,
Training camp is a development story, also it is a simple but great book. The only thing is that the language and style of the book is very basic, It is written at a high school level, in my opinion, which makes it a very easy and quick read, it was so easy I read this on my breaks at work. This story is about a guy named Martin Jones, who is a young football player trying to get into an NFL team in one of there training camp. "Making the team is a goal. But striving for greatness is a life mission. There is a difference, and you have to be honest with yourself and you have to be honest with me,” (Gordon 24). It's all going good until disaster strikes and he gets hurt and an injury sidelines him and he has to sit out. This makes him stressed, scared, and uncertain on what to do next. So he goes to went the team trainer and a coach, they have taken him under their care and start to train his mind, which he learns that to be the Best, he has a lot more to learn on and off the field. What he learns from one of the coaches that takes him under his wing, Coach Ken, is to that, a few lessons that he teaches to players so that they can be successful or even be great on and off the field, forever.
I awoke to the sun piercing through the screen of my tent while stretching my arms out wide to nudge my friend Alicia to wake up. “Finally!” I said to Alicia, the countdown is over. As I unzip the screen door and we climb out of our tent, I’m embraced with the aroma of campfire burritos that Alicia’s mom Nancy was preparing for us on her gargantuan skillet. While we wait for our breakfast to be finished, me and Alicia, as we do every morning, head to the front convenient store for our morning french vanilla cappuccino. On our walk back to the campsite we always take a short stroll along the lake shore to admire the incandescent sun as it shines over the gleaming dark blue water. This has become a tradition that we do every morning together
