OBJECTIFICATION IN BEAUTY PAGEANTS Normally, beauty pageant competitions focus on the skills, appearance and techniques of people who were competing. On the other hand, beauty pageant proponents argue that this competition promotes beauty with purpose, in contrast to that, the opponents of beauty pageants said that it is more of the objectification of its candidates. Negative comments still exists against the authenticity of beauty pageants. For people and other individuals have different perceptions in beauty pageants. According to her, in the yearly beauty pageants, there are many candidates who have the potentials to participate in such kind of event to stand out from each other. In addition, it teaches the candidates the ups and downs of a pageant, and having a good relation to the other candidates. Also, beauty pageants serve as a way to market the tradition, culture and values that a country has towards the development of tourism industry, (Glorine, 2016). These pageants inspire young women to prove themselves by showcasing their beauty, intelligence, talents and personality traits, (Lobit, 2016). Pageant taught individuals to be confident enough to showcase what and who they are. Beauty pageants are an opportunity to get people to finally listen to the issues that are faced by the world. As a matter of fact many individuals say that beauty pageants are made to objectified contestants. Some of them say that beauty pageants just focuses on showcasing external beauty that the internal beauty of the candidates. While some of them see beauty pageants as a brainwashing machine, which changes the perceptions of individuals, not to give importance to internal beauty but to rely on their beauty. Lastly, some people see the negative effects, or psychological effects that candidates acquire after aspiring or joining beauty pageants, which includes suffering from eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia. But in spite of those negative comments connected to the beauty pageants there are still people who believed that pageants were made to empower its candidates. For according to them, beauty pageants taught individuals to be confident enough in showing their beauty at the same time to share their intelligence and advocacies to the world.
