The saying “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” is one that has been around for centuries. In fact, “This saying first appeared in the 3rd century BC in Greek. It didn't appear in its current form in print until the 19th century, but in the meantime there were various written forms that expressed much the same thought,” (Martin, 1963-2013). This quote is the perfect inference that beauty is based on perception. Perception is the “process of selecting, organizing, and interpreting sensory information, enabling us to recognize meaningful objects and events,” (class notes, 10/7/2013). As a part of the brain’s top-down processing, the perception of beauty has been created and is modified and adjusted based on what is seen, heard and encountered.

Seemingly a continually evolving and infinitely elusive ideal, mankind has been obsessed with the concept of beauty throughout the ages.
According to Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary- Eleventh Edition, beauty is “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit.” (page 108 of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary) But what is beauty really? How does one rationalize its complexity?
The term ‘beauty’ is synonymous with the female face and body, it is rarely applied to men in the discussion of aesthetics. Beauty is theorised across art, aesthetics, sociology, psychology, and scientific and cultural studies.xxxxxx
According to the article by Dave Barry, "The Ugly Truth about Beauty", the article compares between men and women. Barry illustrate that men think of themselves as average looking unlike women they always think that they are not good enough. Barry think contributes to this difference is that women when they were young they used to play with a Barbie which make them feel that they have to be perfect just like here and that generate low self-self-esteem. On the other hand men used to play by their action figures. Which they are not a good looker. In this article Barry offer advice for both gender. That women must have self-confidence and men should care about their look just a little more. I am a women and I know that we are some times be obsessed
To gaze upon beauty leads one to create something beautiful, whether it is a work of art such as a painting, music, a poem, a sculpture or to become attentive to injustice. When one notices the beautiful, one is distracted from the idea that one is the center of the universe, thus one is becoming unselfish, and begins to see beauty in more ordinary things, realizing they are not so ordinary, therefore offering those things protection. Elaine Scarry in her work On Beauty and Being Just supports this notion. Scarry writes: The beholder, in response to seeing beauty, often seeks to bring new beauty into the world and may be successful in this endeavor... beholders of beautiful things become beautiful in their interior lives: if the contents of consciousness are full of the calls of birds, mental pictures of the way dancers move, fragments of jazz pieces for piano and flute, remembered glimpses of ravishing faces, a sentence of incredible tact and delicacy spoken by a friend, then we have been made intensely beautiful (Scarry, 88-89)
actual image. The idea of beauty is all around us. It is what we look for in all aspects of life. It is
American Beauty delves into the lives of an upper middle class family living in the suburbs. From what I gather, Lester Burnham who played by Kevin Spacey is the main character in an overall sense. He is a father to an introverted 16 year old daughter, Jane. The movie also follows Lester’s wife, Carolyn Burnham. American Beauty reveals all the hidden struggles and sins under their otherwise perfect lives.
My awareness of beauty has been a monumental feature of my life. As I stated earlier, books always have been a central part of my life, and the beauty of the written word has always deeply affected me. Beyond that, my appreciation for art and all things aesthetically pleasing has been ever present, from the decorations I chose in my apartment to the art museums that calm me. Both my parents are scientists, not very concerned with art or anything not practical. However, we travelled a lot growing up, and even though my parents never sought it out, I was exposed to many different cultures and beautiful sights. I was always happiest when we were in cities and able to see the different art and music. This trait is also present in my sister, which makes sense as we both travelled so often. I believe both of our experiences from the environment we were privileged to grow up in made this trait manifest as it did. This trait has seemed to evolve with age, seemingly because of my higher attention span as I have
The definition of beauty is varying among different people in the world. Even though almost everyone knows the term beauty, many people are struggling in defining it and persuading others to agree with their opinions. Beauty is defined by a combination of qualities existent in a person or thing that fulfills the aesthetic feels or brings about profound gratification. Many people define beauty as a term to describe a person’s physical appearance; they often think that beauty comes from magazines, video girls, or even models. Although the term beauty can define a person’s physical appearance, true beauty lies in the way one acts and thinks rather than the way one look.
Beauty means something different to different kinds of people and cultures. The meaning of beauty is influenced by our environmental surrounding, society, media, peers, culture and experiences. When people think about beauty they think about the physical visual appearance. Actually is “beauty in the eyes of the beholder” (Hungerford, 1878), but perhaps it is more accurate to say that beauty is also in the geography, as cultural ideals of beauty vary drastically by region.
Beauty can be seen by a person in several ways, and it is perceived by most to be only skin-deep. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “It is the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit.” Additionally, the definition from the Oxford Dictionary says, “Beauty is a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.” In short, beauty is described as something attractive and likeable to the eyes. Nonetheless, beauty should not be seen on a physical level, but it should also encompass a person’s character. To further elaborate and understand beauty, one should know how the media perceives beauty towards
There are so many different opinions on what beauty is. The idea of beauty is purely opinionated. Beauty is your own idea, skinny or thick, long hair or short hair, light skin or dark skin. In society today it has become more materialistic based if you wear the latest designer or you have the newest pair of sneakers out and the true meaning of being beautiful has escaped our souls. “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder” This saying first appeared in the 3rd century BC in Greek. It didn't appear in its current form in print until the 19th century, but in the meantime there were various written forms that expressed much the same thought. This famous saying implies that everyone has their own definition and recognition of beauty. What is seen as a marvel to one person might be the complete opposite to another, just like a dress that I found very beautiful but my Mum found it not at all nice which explains the saying “One man’s garbage is another man’s treasurer” (Aighearach).Beauty… some people believe that beauty is all physical, having great looks, having all the guys and girls fawning all over you because you are the hottest bloke or chick in the school or wherever you are. Some people believe that beauty is the clothes you wear, the make-up you put on. I say those things are just physical beauty. Inner beauty is of the heart, it’s the person you are, you actions and reactions to other people, your way of life. Inner beauty is the beauty of the heart, being selfless, reliable, loving and caring and always willing to help even if you don’t know the person. Real beauty is about always being willing to assist anyone even if there is nothing in it for you except the pure pleasure of seeing satisfaction, content on the other person’s face, that person has inner beauty. It represents goodwill and kindness.
