Beast Of The Southern Wild Analysis

The film Beast of the Southern Wild is an mind blowing film about a young girl named Hushpuppy and her father Wink who shares a disturbing, yet caring relationship.They live in a poor bayou town just outside of New Orleans called the Bathtub. The Bathtub is a place beyond the levee that is separated from the rest of society. Although, the residents of the bathtub are living in poverty, they are content with their living status. That is until a huge unannounced storm tears through and destroys the entire town. The film portrays the United States Government’s disaster response to Hurricane Katrina.
In the film, the people of the Bathtub were left with minimum options for survival against the fatal storm. Most of them could not afford to leave

behind their small possessions, because they were all that they owned. Some of the people probably could have evacuated if they were aware that there was a storm approaching. For instance, in the film the residents of the Bathtub were unaware of the storm due to the lack of information about the storm. The Government knew that there was a storm approaching and the damages that it could cause due to the poor maintenance of the levees, but they failed to warn the people that lived in the Bathtub because of their harsh living conditions. As a result, people were killed, displaced, and left homeless with inadequate food and water. Wink and the rest of the community knew that they needed to evacuate, but they feared for the worst. They knew that if the people above the levee came to rescue them everyone would be placed in shelters and separated from their families.
In the film, after the storm the Bathtub was completely destroyed. The United States Government failed to send any kind of emergency personnel or government assistance to help the community. They were unprepared for the devastation that was caused. As a result, everyone was left to survive the best way that they could. Wink and Hushpuppy managed to escape the flooding through their roof. The community of the Bathtub came together as one to try to survive their hard times. They build homes side by side and shared the little food that they did have . Eventually everyone started to get sick from the contaminated food and water. After several of trying to stay alive the government finally sent rescue teams to the Bathtub and forced the community to evacuate. The damages from the storm were never repaired. The Bathtub community suffered from depression, emotional hardship, and the loss of their families and homes.
The message of the film was realistic. It gave a straightforward view of the adversity that the city of New Orleans suffered from Hurricane Katrina. The film expressed how the Government was unprepared for such a massive disaster and because of that a lot of people suffered a great deal. After the storm, they also did not properly executed a plan for the aftermath of the storm. If the levees would have received the proper maintenance, they probably could have saved more lives. Consequently, numerous people lost their lives.
