In the story “Be Cool to the Pizza Dude” by Sarah Adams talks about the importance of treating others equally no matter what the person is like or looks like. This also includes being kind and cool to the pizza dude. Adams also talks about how being cool to the pizza dude is a practice of equality, she believes that her measurement as a human being, her worth and her pride she takes in her job or someone else's comes with respect for others.
Next, the tone of this story is a lot more laid back than the typical stories I am use to reading. Most stories I have ever read have never used the word “dude” in it and they never had such a casual tone. I too believe that everyone should show each other respect in anything that they do, because it’s
a sign of kindness and it makes the other person feel better to have a little respect from others. Finally,This is a great story that others should read and understand the importance of showing respect and helping one another out, because that is a very important character trait that many people nowadays lack greatly.
Fatemeh Fakhraie’s essay “Scarfing it Down,” explains how Muslim women suffer because of what they wear. Fakhraie blogs about Muslim women in her website she explains; “Seeing ourselves portrayed in the media in ways that are one-dimensional and misleading." Several people judge Muslim's by their appearance because they assume they're a bad person. The author of this essay wants the reader to know that Muslim women wearing a hijab are not a threat to the world.
"Brownies," by ZZ Packer, is a story about a Brownie troop of African American fourth-grade girls from Atlanta, Georgia, who go to Camp Crescendo. At the camp, they encounter a troop of white girls, Troop 909, and believe that one of the white girls used a racially offensive comment when she spoke of them. The African American girls decide they need to get revenge on Troop 909 and resolve to beat them up in a bathroom. Before they started beating Troop 909, the African American girls realized that Troop 909 is a troop with mentally challenged, and handicapped girls. Later, the African American girls discovered that Troop 909 was falsely accused of making the racially offensive comment. The climax of the story is when Arnette,
In John Updike’s story “A&P” a man named Sammy makes some galant life changing decisions. If it wasn’t for those three girls that walked into the A&P that day Sammy would still be sitting behind the the counter at the cash register debating what to do with his life. Sammy couldn 't take the disrespect his boss was giving the customers anymore. Sammy gained a lot of respect for the opposite sex because of his boss 's actions and how the three girls reacted to them, some of which made him a protagonist.
Due to the negative societal feelings towards effeminate men, guys who break the rules of masculinity are socially punished. Kimmel interviewed a first-year college student who said that breaking these masculine gender roles would cause him to “lose everything.” Kimmel continues with a list of answers varying from getting physically attacked to being ostracized to self-harm. Therefore, Kimmel characterized “The Guy Code” as very negative and hurtful.
The guest when asked to leave got very angry with the owner and began yelling at him. The guest did not feel that he did anything wrong and did not understand why he was being asked to leave, he told the owner that he was only “playing” with the hostess. The owner informed him that if he could not respect the staff he was not welcome in the restaurant. This action is more aggressive than the comments made by men in the article or comments made by the guest in the previous example, but it shows that there is a social feeling that men can do or say whatever they want to
James Baldwin uses the adolescent thoughts of “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” to convey the internal struggle and confusion of a young African-American living in a dominantly white community, attempting to find inner-peace in the affairs of his sexuality, family, and education through the benefits of his religion
When being cool you can see it as being socially constructed (Waren, 2014). Most people see cool as not being an object but just as seeing it as a word and self-confidence. Once one feel they are cool their self-esteem goes up and they find more self-control of how they life should be played out. The audience don’t have to be mean or break the rules to be cool there are many other things like helping out people in need or doing things you way without people telling you how things should be done. Once the readers can live their life how they want to and make up their own rules then that makes a person one step closer to being in the category
In the article " Don't Blame The Eater" By David ZincZenco he expresses his bad eating habits growing up as an American child. David explains how his mother worked extended hours at her job , and didn't have the time to prepare home cooked meals. In consequence to eating bad foods David resulted torpid and obese at the age of fifteen. David blames the little knowledge he had on the health effects caused by fast food; if he knew better ; he would of made wiser choices. Today in America the epidemic of obesity has increased dramatically due to bad eating habits .One of the results in cosequence to those who follows an unhealthy diet high in sugar and fat ;has been the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes . Unfortinitely, type 2 diabetes has increased by 30 percent in children suffering from obesity, and not to mention the medical costs to treat diabetes has increased to 100 billion a year . However, such deseases can be cured if fast food restaurants stated the health risks involved if such foods are consumed just like the tabacco company states the health risk involved when smoking. If David had known then the damage he was causing to his body he wouldn't have risked his health by eating bad food at such a
and innuendos, as well as the men's’ own social ideals of how men and woman should interact.
Throughout our life we will see racism, poverty, politics, and even something as simple gender differences. I am guilty of creating gender roles, whether that be in class, at home, in a grocery store, etc. It is something we will never escape, and it is because of stereotypes, our history, and the distinction between gender on its own. Boys are supposed to like trucks and girls play with dolls. In this class I have found gender roles in every topic we have covered. The two topics that stuck out to me and that I will talk about in this paper are hookup culture and dating. These two are sort of opposite, but I find the differences in roles between them to be important.
Treating people with equality and respect is important because without it women wouldn’t have as many rights as they do now and including the African Americans.
The next song that I chose to listen to is El Grillo. El Grillo is a very humorous song. It is a very fascinating version of musical piece. What I really enjoyed about “El Grillo” was the use of text painting, which was used by Dez Prez'. Text-painting was a huge thing in that time, as madrigal became popular. Text-painting is when music matches the word. The song is basically an extended example of text painting, I think, because the light tone, bouncy melody, and whimsical repetition makes the listeners think of the cricket. For the majority, this is a really simple song! And I like seeing the way music has evolved. Very
Gender roles and relationships play such a big part in today’s society. While some people still live by traditional values, others are behaving in a more modern way. As we have witnessed in our readings, there are many different aspects of gender roles that make up the way men and women interact and get along with each other. In this essay, I will explore the behavior and expectations of traditional gender roles and compare them to more modernized relationships, describe personal examples of these relationships I have witnessed in my family life, and relate them back to the examples found in our readings. These roles are very interesting because although men and women are not exactly alike in the way they are programmed, they are able to coexist
Imagine that you are hurt, whether it is physically, emotionally, or even mentally but you cannot express these emotions. You cannot show one bit of the pain that you are experiencing. The only thing you can do is hide behind a huge dark mask that consumes you and who you really are just so you have the ability to conform to the rest of your peers and society. What makes it even worse is that it must be done for the majority of the days you live. The reality is this exists today in the world we live in. Men every day are forced to conform to the rules of the guy code in order to live without the criticism of society. In the article “’Bros Before Hos’: The Guy Code” by sociologist and spokesperson for the National Organization for Men Against
Jackson’s argument is related to the statements made in The Freshest Kids because of the construction of whiteness, which discriminates against Black culture, devalues and ignores the true meaning of Hip Hop on the basis that it is a Black movement. Through the gaze and the construction of whiteness, Hip Hop loses its place amongst American society because it is negatively tied to African culture and is seen as worthless. However, even when American society starts to acknowledge the existence of Hip Hop, primarily white Americans only look at the physical aspect and become ignorant towards the true meaning; doing a disservice to Hip Hop and African culture. Jackson’s argument holds true and is relatable to The Freshest Kids
