Question 1.) How is the historical context pertinent to our understanding of both Bayoumi’s and Mattingly’s texts? Etc. If the writers left out the historical context of their essays, I could not fully understand the messages of each of these pieces. Providing context gives the reader information and provides relevance to current issues. Mattingly’s essay details the history of the WCTU. Most readers would not know the amount of influence that the WCTU wielded at the turn of the twentieth century. Mattingly contrasts the historical aspects of the organization’s power to its lack of influence today. When reading two passages, one by M.F.K. Fisher on the French port of Marseilles and the other by Maya Angelou on the small town of Stamps, I noticed that the passages had some similarities but where entirely different in their effect and the handling of language resources. While Angelou and Fisher organized and constructed their passages similarly, the persona and rhetoric of the authors are opposite.

Castro “[has] learned not to back down” (Castro 269) in the face of a differing opinion; this is unlike many other writers. It is for this reason that Castro’s writing inspires me to resist the idea that the type of writing that belongs in “the academy” is not for others to necessarily see, but for the people fortunate enough to read it themselves. The power of words and information is universally essential in all its forms, and this type of communication is vital for any sort of improvement or awareness. The passage about Castro’s feminist professor who writes about the Violence Against Women Act is a perfect example of what Castro depicts as one of the downsides of “the academy.” The essay her professor writes could potentially “help protect thousands of women,” but instead it is categorized as an “academic journal” (Castro 266) and most likely will not be accessed by those in need. Lastly, Castro inspires me by emphasizing the need to broaden the origins of authors that are read and interpreted to those who were actually affected by heavy issues. The initial component of Module QF5000 involved collaborative work with our peers culminating in an exhibition demonstrating our understanding of historical perspectives in the early years. The following essay will discuss my individual reflection upon this process both personally and professionally.
In doing so, she became relatable to the reader while still remaining professional and maintaining her credibility. She also included countless statistics and facts, showing the reader that the problem isn’t just an individual issue, but a real social problem. Next, Alexander triggered an emotional response in the reader, making them feel for the persecuted individuals, and driving the reader to promote change. She finished the article off with a call to action, inspiring all individuals to be a part of a “broad based social movement” (Alexander, 25), so we can someday “acknowledge the humanity and dignity of all humans.” (Alexander, 26) In doing so, she tied together an eye-opening article, and gave the audience a glimmer of hope for our nation’s
Shorris wanted to explore on poverty in America and write a book based on opinions on what keeps people poor. Therefore, as results of varied conversations with special people in prison, Shorris came to support the prisoner, Viniece Walker’s, argument that destitute students are those most in need of a liberal education. Viniece introduced Shorris to the thought of the “moral life of downtown”, meaning to expose them to museums, lectures, etc. (Page 2), which he understood as the need for reflection for the poor. This emphasizes the very fact that in order for the poor to escape from their “surround of force” (Page 1) they must undergo a transformation rooted in reflection and self-realization. Shorris believes that “the surround of force is what keeps the poor from being political and the absence of politics in their lives is what keeps them poor.”(Page 1) He further explains that by political he means: “activity with other people at every level, from the family to the neighborhood to the broader community city-state”(Page 1). This idea of a different type of learning, instead of your everyday math and English, but a broader education where there isn’t always a right or wrong answer is what Shorris believes is the key difference maker. Contextual analysis is made up of three basic components; intended audience, setting and most importantly purpose. Authors often times consider and work each contextual piece into the construction of their given argument. An argument is not powerful if audience preference is not a main concern, if the setting isn’t taken into consideration, or if the purpose is not relevant to the current situation. On January 28th, 1986 the shuttle challenger exploded 73 seconds into its take off. President Ronald Reagan wrote a critical speech to address the tragedy that had struck our nation that day. It is highly evident in his address that kept audience, setting, and purpose in mind. He comforts a worried public using calm tone and simple yet effective diction to convince the American nation that it’s necessary to go on and continue the space program and ultimately the scientific revolution.
