Survival Essay
(Hook) Do you ever wonder what it takes to be a survivor? Well look no further, read on! In these three sources, they all show what it takes to be a survivor. (Background) In the first source, “My Escape from North Korea”, Lee escapes her home country. In the second source, “Trapped”, Aron gets his arm stuck between a boulder in a canyon. In the last source, “Big Hero 6”, Baymax almost powers off trying to help Hero. (Thesis) Lee’s courage, Aron’s bravery, and Baymax’s intelligence all show their audience what it takes to be survivor.
(Claim) To start off, in the first source, “My Escape from North Korea”, Lee shows courage when she was sent to China and separated from her family. (Evidence) In paragraph seven, Lee states, “I can’t reveal many details about how I left North Korea, but I can only say that during the ugly years of the famine, I was sent to China to live with distant relatives.” (Analysis) Lee saying this, shows courage because she had no known family with her. When she was in China, she was independent at only fourteen-years old. She went through a rough

time not knowing anyone or where to go. (Link) Lee being separated from her family and being by herself helps show courage. (Claim) Next, Aron's bravery is shown when he tries to amputate his arm for his own survival. (Evidence) On page four paragraph three, Aron's thought is, "Surprising myself, I press on the blade and slowly draw the knife across my forearm. Nothing helps." (Analysis) Aron doing this action shows he is brave enough and up to do anything to survive. Most people in this situation would only freak out, but Aron turns to the difficult way and chooses to amputate his arm, or try to. It may have not succeeded but at least he was still brave. (Link) The action of Aron attempting to amputate his arm shows bravery. (Claim) Additionally, Baymax shows intelligence when his power system is turning off but he still tries to help Hero.
(Evidence) Near the beginning of the movie, Baymax and Hero are at the police station trying to get help. While in the process, Baymax starts to get holes in his body and that causes him to malfunction. Baymax still tries to help Hero by scanning him to make sure he isn't hurt in any way or form. (Analysis) Baymax trying to help Hero in this situation shows his intelligence by when he scans Hero and attempts to tell him what happened. It seems impressive when he does these actions because at the same time his system is shutting down. While in this situation, Baymax became a distraction, but a helpful one, to get Hero out of the police station before they both got in trouble. (Link) Baymax's system shutting down while he is still helping Hero helps show
intelligence. (Restate Thesis) What it takes to be a survivor is shown by Lee's courage, Aron's bravery, and Baymax's intelligence. (Recap Paragraphs) In paragraph one, Lee shows courage when she escapes her home country and is independent in China with no family. In paragraph two, Aron shows bravery when he attemps to amputate his arm for his own survival. In paragraph three, Baymax shows intelligence when he is trying to help Hero while his system his shutting down at the same time. (Clincher) What it takes to be a survivor is for you to have courage, bravery, and intelligence. Courage can help you be more confident and not shy when you're in a difficult situation. Bravery can help you not be afraid of anything if you're in a difficult situation. Intelligence can help you be more thoughtful and cautious of what you do in a difficult situation.
To summarize, the Hero’s Journey is a challenging process, yet Holden answered to his call of journey, undertook challenges under rigorous environments, and finally returned with satisfactory with aides from the helpers.
Cinema has been producing the same hero narrative for centuries. Hero films follow a ten-step sequence to properly set up and execute their story. These movies range from stories of transformations, searches, or a journey back home. Archetypes help to add variety and depth to these stories. Ridley Scott directed Alien, in which Ellen Ripley embarks on a journey where she must survive an alien who is out on a murderous rampage. Alien adds originality to its storyline by choosing a female lead instead of a male, but it still incorporates the same heroic attributes that make a story successful. In this “going home journey” film, Scott is able to incorporate the hero myth and archetypes towards the official hero Ellen Ripley.
Being adventurous, coming out of your comfort zone, and taking risks will lead you to survival. Survival was the main goal for the past and still is in the present. In the 1980s, MLK day was officially declared a holiday, terrorists attacks were happening in Lebanon with the Marines, the Vietnam Memorial opened in Washington, D.C., and the Vietnam War had recently ended. All of the events all have one thing in common, which is survival. There are three short stories that proves you have to take risks and come out of your comfort zone in order to reach survival. The first one is The Quickening by Michael Bishop and was written in 1982. Lawson, the main character in The Quickening, had to break out of his comfort zone and step up to be a leader
...Also an important quote is when she says, "But today I realize I've never really known what it means to be Chinese. I am thirty-six years old" (857). Even though she was in her 30's and still had that identity crisis, it was uplifting knowing that all it took for her to resolve that conflict was one meeting with her sisters.
When Louie was stranded on the raft, he never let circumstance get the better of him. The three survivors, Louie, Phil, and Mac, all had completely differing perspectives of their trouble. Louie and Phil stayed optimistic, while Maxc slowly deteriorated along with his hope. Hillenbrand wrote that "It remains a mystery why these three young men, veterans of the same training and same crash, differed so radically in their perceptions of their plight. Maybe the difference was biological; some men may be wired for optimism, others for doubt... Perhaps the men's histories had given them opposing convictions about their capacity to overcome adversity... Though all three men faced the same hardship, their differing perceptions of it appeared to be shaping their fates. Louie and Phil's ...

An example of survival can be found in the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The town’s people were scared of this unknown creature and were afraid for their lives. In an act of survival, they hunted the beast down in a full town riot. Lucy, John, and Van Helsing hold a significant part in the novel as far as surviving goes. Even though they shared more than others, their survival skills left a significant impact on the
Joseph Campbell defines a hero as “someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself ” (Moyers 1). The Hero’s Journey consists of three major parts: the separation, the initiation and the return. Throughout a character’s journey, they must complete a physical or spiritual deed. A physical deed involves performing a daunting and courageous act that preserves the well-being of another person. A spiritual deed calls for action that improves another individual’s state of mind. While fulfilling their journey, a hero must undergo a psychological change that involves experiencing a transformation from immaturity into independence and sophistication.Campbell states that these events are what ultimately guides a hero into completing
Lee started out in a loving home, that turned into her running away from home at the age of fifteen. Lee became well known with drugs and went on to having a son. Lillian Rose Lee was kidnapped one day while walking along the road and was held captive for eleven years. Since then Lee has begun to live out her dreams(Bush). Even after captivity, Lee decided to continue her life in a positive way. Living life the way a person wants to should be an individual 's main priority, and Lillian Lee is a prime example of this and shows that life really does go on. In an effort to change her life for the better, Lee knew she had to make major changes within herself. One article about Lee’s life after captivity says, “Knight legally changed her name to Lillian Rose Lee and has become an advocate for victims of abuse and violence(Jones).” Michelle Knight, or Lillian Rose Lee, has become a major survivor from numerous events, and had the courage to make a commitment of changing her name. Lee helps to let other victims know that life will be okay. Lillian Rose Lee’s life obstacles are not over yet though, she still has many more to come and she knows it. Lillian Lee will probably never have children or see her son again due to the fact that he was adopted while she was in captivity, but she has decided to not let that stand in her way of living her life. She has rode a motorcycle, recorded her first single, and dedicates her time to helping survivors(Jones). Therefore, instead of dwelling on the past, Lee has decided to be happy and make her dreams come true. For Lillian Rose Lee, life still goes on and seems to be going in her
Korea was “an ocean of tears.” Most of the families kept crying for hours while they were embracing each other. Even though they were not saying a word but weeping, they were still communicating with each other the pain that they went through while they were apart. They got old during fifty years of separation but they recognized one another and told each other that they still have the same look. They were overwhelmed with joy while they were talking about their lives. They were also mourning to hear some of their families had passed away while they were separated. They were in great relief and exceeding joy at the same time. Keller says “this same dynamic is at work when you lose some possession you take for granted,” he continues, “when you find it again (having thought it was gone forever) you cherish and appreciate it in a far deeper way” (Keller
Hollywood war movies are commonly based around heroic and courageous actions. These are major characteristics in the movies Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down. Although the film Black Hawk Down is based on an actual event, it is all about common soldiers conquering fear and hardship to save wounded allies, despite seeing the deaths of friends along the way. The story becomes personalized and revolves around a few individual soldiers who give examples of heroism. In the movie, one soldier returns to base injured and later chooses to return to the front line to help rescue his allies that are more gravely wounded than him. There are also multiple instan...
For instance, in "My Escape from North Korea" at 7:28, "since [her] family couldn't speak Chinese, she had to guide them...2,000 miles in China, and then to Southeast Asia." Lee had to have the drive to travel that far with her family. Especially since Lee was the only one who could speak fluent Chinese, the rest of her family could have easily been caught. If Lee didn’t have the determination to guide her family a long way across China and the Koreas, she could be trapped in a jail to this day. Hyonseo also shows this trait when she says, "Because many...stay in contact with family members still inside...we send information and money that is helping change North Korea...("My Escape from North Korea," 10:44) .”Her experience inspired her to help others in similar situations. Lee continues to risk her life and her freedom by giving information to help other people to survive through the same problem. She shows to everyone that she wants to help others, like her family and her friends, when times are rough. Lee shows that determination can help survivors move forward through their
Four Chinese mothers have migrated to America. Each hope for their daughter’s success and pray that they will not experience the hardships faced in China. One mother, Suyuan, imparts her knowledge on her daughter through stories. The American culture influences her daughter, Jing Mei, to such a degree that it is hard for Jing Mei to understand her mother's culture and life lessons. Yet it is not until Jing Mei realizes that the key to understanding who her mother was and who she is lies in understanding her mother's life.
June-May fulfills her mother’s name and life goal, her long-cherished wish. She finally meets her twin sisters and in an essence fulfills and reunites her mother with her daughter through her. For when they are all together they are one; they are their mother. It is here that June-May fulfills the family portion of her Chinese culture of family. In addition, she fully embraces herself as Chinese. She realizes that family is made out of love and that family is the key to being Chinese. “And now I also see what part of me is Chinese. It is so obvious. It is my family. It is in our blood.” (Tan 159). Finally, her mother’s life burden is lifted and June-May’s doubts of being Chinese are set aside or as she says “After all these years, it can finally be let go,” (Tan 159).
Back then, most parents that came from a foreign country always seemed to push their kids to do their best so they can have a better life style than their parents. Lee ended up going to Lehigh for college. He did very well for himself. Before he went to college though, he enlisted in the army. It was around World War II when he did so, of course. But because he had Rheumatic fever when he was a kid , he couldn’t go and fight. The doctors said it was gone. The army said it could come back though. So they rejected his application. He went to Lehigh instead. Ford always took the top student out of the top fifty colleges back then, for a study at Ford. They would get to work at Ford doing just about everything you could do. Lee was one of them invited. He enrolled at Princeton after that. He graduated with a degree in engi...
