Bauxite is a clayey rock that's the main ore of aluminum. It consists of hydrous aluminum oxide with proportions of iron oxides. Bauxite is mostly used for aluminum production. It’s a rock composed largely of aluminum-bearing minerals. It forms once dirt soils are severely leached of silicon oxide and alternative soluble materials during a wet tropical or subtropic climate. Primarily, all the aluminum that has ever been created has been mined from Bauxite. Presently, there are 5 bauxite mines in Australia providing feedstock for the seven aluminum oxide refineries, that successively offer aluminum oxide to the six Australian Aluminum smelters, and the export market. A bauxite is a mixture consisting of hydrated aluminum oxide minerals and mineral impurities which are formed by weathered aluminum bearing rocks. In 1891 bauxite was mined in Alabama from the Rock Run. However, mining came to a sudden stop because metallurgical grade bauxite became very hard to obtain. Production started back up in 1927 and has been running on a maintained basis. Due to irregular distributions of bauxite deposits, exploratory test drilling must be conducted before any mining. The Creosote bush, Larrea tridentate, is the most characteristic specie of the North American deserts. It is in the Zygophyllacaeae family. Although considered native specie, it is actually an invader from South America. The common name creosote suggests one of the reasons it is able to survive in some of harshest environments. According to Schultz and Floyd, “stems and evergreen leaves are covered with a sticky resin that smells like, but doesn’t contain, the wood preservative creosote…the resin screens leaves the leaves against ultraviolet radiation, reduces water loss, and poisons microbes and plant eating animals.” The creosote bush starts as a single stem, but then when it matures it grows into a circle. The outer edges of the bush flourish will the center, where the soil has been depleated, dies. These two things about the creosote help it survive long periods of time. In the Mojave desert “a specimen in question was estimated to about 6000 years old, which makes it twice as old as California Redwoods (Sequoia) and at least 1000 years older than Bristle-cone pine (Pinus aristata)” (Williams) making it the oldest plant in North America. Individual creosotes can live for about 100 years, but the circles that form are exact clones of the original. “An elliptical grouping of such clones found in the Mojave Desert has been dated as about 11,700 years old, arguably making it the oldest plant life yet known” (Microsoft Encarta).

Mining industry has been the anchor of South Australia’s economy and, benefits it has provided outweigh whichever associated costs. As developed by the South Australian State Government (2013), “realising the benefits of the mining boom for all” is one of the seven strategic priorities to secure the state’s future. Mining is an important industry in South Australia because it has been a major source of minerals for the high demand in Australia and many countries (Flinders Ranges Research n.d.). This industry plays a vital part in advantaging the state in terms of economic – profits and job opportunities; social – more skilled workers and population growth in the outback; political – good state and country reputations; cultural – workforce diversification.

Though it has had many negative impacts on the environment in the past, mining is a vital industry completely necessary to our economy and lives. Nearly every item we use or encounter in our day to day lives is mined or contains mined products. Without the excavation of such materials things like computers, televisions, large building structures, electricity, and cars would not be possible. Virtually every technological and medical advance uses minded materials, without which millions would suffer. Some examples of minerals in the home include the telephone which is made from as many as 42 different minerals, including aluminum, beryllium, coal, copper, gold, iron, silver, and talc. A television requires over 35 different minerals, and more than 30 minerals are needed to make a single personal computer. Without boron, copper, gold and quartz, your digital alarm clock would not work. Every American uses an average 47,000 pounds of newly mined materials each year, which is higher than all other countries with the exception of Japan, which is a staggering figure representative of our dependence and need for mined minerals. Coal makes up more than half of nation’s electricity, and will continue to be the largest electrical supplier into 2020 & accounting for some 95 percent of the nation's fossil energy reserves – nine of every ten short-tons of coal mined in the United States is used for electricity generation. As the population of the world grows more mineral resources must be exploited through mining in order to support the rising demand for such products. With all of the companies these days using these technological advantages toward aluminum recycling, the companies that do not use them are at a huge disadvantage.
