The definition of a hero is subjective. Accordingly, Robert Ray believes the hero is able to be divided into three categories: the outlaw, official and composite hero. In most cases, a hero can be categorized into one of these categories. Through the examination of Jekyll and Hyde, the Batman movie from 1943, and film of Batman in 1989, qualities of the hero will be depicted as a function of time.

The Dark Knight borrowed elements from Batman: The Killing Joke, a 1988 DC Comics graphic novel, which provides an origin story for the Joker. The connection between the two leads to a similar origin story of the creation of the Joker through the influence of Batman. Batman's interference in The Killing Joke causes the Joker to leap into a chemical vat, which severely disfigures him. In The Dark Knight, the Joker himself also has multiple testimonies on how he came to be. He sometimes blames his abusive and alcoholic father for creating his mutilated smile while in a drunken rage one night. The Joker also claims that after his wife’s face was mutilated, he pulled a razor on his own to comfort her by showing that her damaged appearance didn’t bother him. After carving his own cheeks, he says that, “she couldn’t stand the sight of (him).” This disturbing attempt to make her feel better makes causes worse, resulting in his wife leaving him, furthering his mental instability. Although the scars are present on The Dark Knight version of the Joker, the rest of his appearance is cosmetic in contrast to the physiological image of the Joker from the 1989 Batman film. The Joker in The Dark Knight applies chalk white makeup to his face and dark products to blacken the spaces around his eyes. He also dyes his greasy hair green rather than having the chemically bleached green hair follicles of the 1989 Joker who fell into the bubbling green substance. Their personalities differ mainly by the 1989 Joker being more comical while The Dark Knight Joker being more psychotic. The Joker from The Dark Knight calls himself an “agent of chaos” and wishes to drag everyone down to his level of insanity and corruption rather than just kill them
Somebody who had established higher power in their community. Somebody who tried to run from fate, and has the moment of recognition and understanding of their destiny. Batman. Even though he is considered the strong and powerful superhero of Gotham City, Batman's characteristic features show that he relates strongly to that of a "tragic" hero. In the beginning, the Batman is presented at a higher state of appreciation, even though the police see him as a vigilante. Despite his wealth, Batman, otherwise known as Bruce Wayne, is easily relatable to audiences, which makes it easy to sympathize and empathize with the character. Batman is in a constant battle within himself, trying to be the good guy, while defeating the bad guys. His morals prove true when he admits that he won't kill any of the many villians that cause destruction for Gotham City. But, because of this moral, sometimes the villians end up escaping and doing more harm then good. In the end, this interal chaos and internal battle is seen interally and externally through Batman. At the end of the most recent Batman series, The Dark Knight, his exit at the end of the movie is, in essence, his figurative death. Bruce Wayne wants to keep Gotham City safe. And with the "Batman" gone, villians will be least likely to continue to destroy and conquer. As an audience, we cling to the edge of our seats and feel dismay for our beloved superhero and what is to become of
An archetype is a human experience or symbol that is universally known and accepted. Archetypes can be images or stories passed on through history. Carl Jung, a prominent psychiatrist in the early 1900’s, used archetypes in his theory about the human psyche and how humans can recognize these symbols because they reside in the collective human subconscious. Some common examples of archetypes are The Hero, The Mentor, The Mother, The Villain and many more. Archetypes like these can be seen in everyday things like books, tv or movies. In The Complete Stories by Zora Neale Hurston there are many different archetypes in each story but three prominent ones are The Trickster, The Devil or Evil, and The Hero. In the novel The Trickster archetype
The classic comic book character Batman, played by Christian Bale in the motion picture has an astonishingly complex character that is illustrated well with Aristotle’s perspective. Batman has two distinct characters, the one under the mask, Bruce Wayne and the one covered by the mask, Batman. Both have different sets of virtues that the other does not necessarily have. To explain these virtues, I will attempt to do an analysis of Batman based on Aristotle’s virtue. Then I will determine if he has a good life and whether others should mimic it.
After Batman Begins, Batman starts to raise the bar on defeating crime in Gotham. Lieutenant James Gordon and district attorney Harvey Dent help with convicting criminals within Gotham, but a new super villain comes into play, the Joker. With the new criminal mastermind, Batman is soon forced to question everything he believes in. The Joker will also take the first fully fledged supporter of Batman and make him question everything, especially Batman.
Batman and police commissioner James Gordon try to rid the Gotham of organized crime while combating the rise of the menacing and terrorizing psychopath villain, the Joker. (uci.edu) It’s important to take notice of the other clowns featured throughout the movie as well as their roles in the heist. This is crucial and singles the Joker out as the odd man.
Complete. Me.” If there were no Batman there would be no one Joker would fight against since he knows that the police department will not be able to stop him without the help of the Batman. Batman and Joker are two sides of the same coin, the coin that Harvey Dent uses, at first, to “make his own luck,” and then later in his acceptance of chance as destiny. The reason why I say that Batman and Joker are two sides of the same coin is because he becomes, to society, an uncontainable force in very much the same way of Joker was, even though he is doing good. But the fact that he let 5 or so people die because he “did not” want to turn himself in the same level as Joker. The people believed that Batman couldn’t be controlled, that he has lost all respect for societal norms and the rule of law. But Batman never succumbs to his own dark, like Joker did. In the movie, Bruce Wayne says the line, “I’ve seen what I have become to fight men like him,” and he basically rejects the path he has to take to stop Joker, a man who has no rules whatsoever. For example, in the scene where Batman and Joker had a showdown and Batman was going towards Joker in his vehicle, Joker maniacally screams, “Hit me!” but as much as Batman wanted to annihilate the Joker, he knows he cannot violate his own moral code and almost sacrifices himself to prevent this from happening. Batman does not want to kill the evildoers, but to bring
The origin of these two characters is quite significant. Bruce Wayne or “Batman” is mortal and from Earth, his parents were killed in a robbery while young Bruce Wayne was spared, this creates a pivotal moment that shapes his entire life. He was raised by his butler Alfred until he was 18; it wasn’t until he was 18 years old that he traveled the world and learned various forms of martial arts and weapons training. After 7 years of traveling and discovering himself, Bruce Wayne returns home to Gotham City; which is taken over by corruption. Crime Lords run the streets along with the government positions. Bruce Wayne uses his skills along with his company (Wayne Enterprises) he becomes the Batman.
He was faced to let the Joker murder a person everyday he didn't come forward or risk his secret identity and the people in his life get killed. While Joker and Batman were arguing Batman asks why Joker hasn't just killed him yet, and Joker was basically saying because it wouldn't be fun, so Batman says “You’re garbage. You kill for money.” Which is true, Batman is there to save innocent people and get rid of the criminals like the Joker. Batman decides to still keep his identity a secret. Batman should have just came forward so that innocent people wouldn't have had to
Batman’s character has changed throughout the 70s, 80s, and 2000s while reflecting the culture of the generations in several different ways. Batman went from a dark and brooding character who transitioned to an even darker and destructive one.
