My article for psychology is basketball, I chose this because I like to play basketball and I like to play sports. 1 Basketball psychology is the study of how mental attitudes shape its performance while on the court. Also it is the study of two primary surfaces and the application on the court. Basketball is a mental training and a physical sport. It is mentally trained because it gives the player toughness and strength while on the court and it is very important for players to be that way. Sports in general reduce can improve your mental health by stress and depression, when you are physically active your mind can be distracted from daily stressors. 2 Also, exercising can help you to reduce the levels of stress hormones inside of your body. …show more content…
1 Basketball psychology has two crucial to take in consideration. First one concentration and focus, if a player can’t handle the mental strain then the performance will degrade over the course of the game. 4 The second one is the mental game. 1 Being mentally tough is important because having mental toughness allows you to reach peak performance during the demands that you are placed in such as training, practice, or competition. Taking both of these factors proves a point.A player who goes into the game with anything less than complete commitment is a player who will not perform his best and who has already lost the mental game of basketball. Basketball demands a dedicated desire to carry the player through the highs and lows of game. To dedicate yourself you must be mentally tough to the task at hand and keep your mind focus on relevant things. 1 When the buzzer rings and the game is on, it’s the mental game of basketball that is particularly hybrid of battle strategy and mental endurance that makes or breaks player’s performance. Sports psychology can be defined as the study and application of the attitudes and behaviors of athletes (including team athletes) that impact (either positively or negatively) performance in sports or competitive settings. The goal of sports psychology is to help athletes and teams identify unhealthy attitudes and beliefs, apply mental toughness skills and peak performance strategies to perform at optimal levels (Cohn). Sports psychology is not recognized as a traditional field of practice offered by graduate programs; although, it is a recognized field of specific study under Kinesiology and Physical Education Programs. Sports psychology was first founded in 1920 by Carl Diem in Berlin, Germany. Later on, in 1925, sport psychology was brought to the U.S by Cloman Griffith. These early psychologists aimed to observe the effects of mental state on different factors of performance such as reaction time, tension, relaxation, and awareness (Haney). This have help people of all ages get through their burdens and do something they love instead of doing some negative. For many people basketball has become more than a game, it’s the way of life. The American game of basketball has traveled now, it’s played by more than 250 million people worldwide.
Toughness is just a term that many individuals use to describe they’re ability to believe that their not weak in any way. Playing the game of basketball and being a part of the team is more than just being tough. Basketball is more of being determined, strong, and willing to become a better athlete. When you have the mindset that I am tough and no one can give you pointers to make your game better. Does not make you an athlete nor makes you tough. What makes any ball player tough are the struggles and the process you go through to make you better. We as players have our ups and downs. As soon as we give up, were no longer determined, strong, and willing. As soon as we give up this problem is what makes us weak, and what coach wants a weak player on their team that gives up in any possible way. There are three words that describe the term tough and these words are being determined, being strong , and willing to learn and become an overachiever in the game of basketball.

“The odds of a high school basketball player making it to the “next level” to play college basketball (DI, II, or III) is slim. In fact, only 3.4% of high school players go on to play college basketball. Taking it even further, only 1.2% of college basketball players go on to get drafted in the NBA” (Winters, 2016). There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. Those players are self-centered, they do not play for the team, and generally don’t play because they love the game. These are the types of players who don’t usually go on to play at the next level. On the other hand, there are the players that absolutely dedicate their life to the game of basketball just because they love the game. That is what coaches are looking for in a player, and that is the kind of player I am striving to be.

Sports psychologist, as well as other psychologists, play a huge role in assisting clients to access their full potential. Helping an athlete to create and obtain goals can impact his or her performance. There are three main types of goals, outcome, performance and process goals. The completion of each goal has its result and level of effectivity. The choice of goal setting used depends on the individual’s unique need; this can also be a combination of goals or all three.
Sports psychology continues to evolve in order to ensure that comprehensive and evidence-based psychological services are available for athletes and teams. Giving athletes an understanding of their psychological functioning, and building the ability to implement a range of psychological strategies in competition enables athletes to both execute their skills and thrive under pressure as they strive to reach their performance potential.
