Basketball is for Everyone
Alex at 5’8 was trying out for his high school basketball team. All the other players trying out for the basketball team were 6’0 feet to 6’6 feet. After the first day of try-outs were over the basketball coach sent him home because he was too short and it would be tough for him to play because every player is tall. High school basketball teams shouldn’t pick players to play based on height.
Opponents may argue If players want to play in the competitive level like the NBA then players need to be tall enough because the game is easier if players are closer to the basket. However practicing shooting the ball in game situations will make you better at putting the ball in the basket. Using your shortness to your advantage

will also you excel at being a better basketball player. Having the ability to have good ball control and drive to the basket will also you make you a stand out performer. Your defense and passing ability will also help players into becoming a great basketball player. Hard work and your time spent to get better will show it doesn’t matter if you are tall or short.
In his article, Horace Grant explains hard work pays off. Players don’t have to be tall to make a basket. Players can be tall and not make a basket. The reason tall players are good at making a basket is by working hard at practice. Short players can do the same.It doesn’t matter what size you are just as long as you work hard you will excel. It doesn’t matter what size players are just as long as you work hard you will excel. “If you are willing to learn and put the hard work in , you can become anything you want to become.” This shows that height doesn’t matter in the game of basketball. What really matter is how much work you put into what you want to succeed in. (PTI,) Getting better at protecting the ball, being a good passer, having quick feet and hands, being a leader, and playing good defense will make you a better ball player and it doesn’t matter how tall you are. In his article “How to Use Shortness to your Advantage in Basketball” Chris Blake explains leadership doesn’t need height. It often can’t be coached being a floor leader is one of the most important traits in basketball.Shorter players are often guards so what you need to do is get a good handle (better ball control).”Leadership does not come in sizes and often cannot be coached, so displaying the ability to run the show will greatly improve your game.” This shows having the abilities of leadership, quick …show more content…
feet and hands, defense, and passing the ball will make you a better basketball player and it doesn’t even matter about your height. (Blake,1,2) Ball players are often tall and weigh a lot but you can be undersized to beat your opponent in the post.
Player just need to learn how to battle in the post and get in the right position and use your strength to either to grab a rebound or make a basket. In his article “9 Secrets to Dominating as an Undersized Post Player” Coach Mac explains the way undersized players beat bigger players in the post is by, being willing to battle, reading the basketball's flight path, use your body to create space, have an incredible jump shot, and get crafty with your post moves.” you don’t have to be taller than 7 foot 2 and weigh 300 pounds to dominate opponents in the post” Players have to master the abilities of playing in the post to become a good basketball player. This shows little guys can beat a big guy just by using their strength and knowledge to beat their opponent in the post. (Coach Mac,1). To be a good shooter and have good shot mechanics you must finish with a relaxed wrist at the end of your shot. In his article “21 Easy Ways to Improve Your Basketball shooting Percentage” Jeff Haefner gives his readers how to perfect and improve your jump shot. “ One of the worst things you can do is think about your shooting mechanics during a game.” Players should practice their jump shot enough to where they don’t have to think about it, it should be a natural instinct when you shoot the rock. This shows that perfecting a jump shot and players getting comfortable with their jump shot
will improve their natural game tremendously. ( Haefner,1). Dribbling the basketball is the most basic thing in basketball but when players get creative with the ball, that’s when players become great. In his article “ 8 Basketball Power Dribbling Drills” Marc Stein explains dribbling is the biggest tool a shorter player can use. “As a basketball player, a powerful and effective way to keep defenders on their toes and increase your threat as an offensive player is to develop an agile quick dribbling technique.” Dribbling the basketball can help short players be effective on the court, that means blowing by defenders, pulling up off the dribble and hitting the open man to get a bucket. This shows short players can become really dominant if players learn how to dribble the basketball to where they become a wizard with the ball. (Stein,1,2)
It was not until the year 2002 that the NBA was able to find someone to match Jordan’s dazzling acrobatic style of play. His name is Lebron James. Lebron, who plays shooting guard and small forward, stands at an athletic six-eight. James, however, never played in the NCAA. He was drafted straight out of high school in the 2003-04 season, by the Cleveland Cavaliers. James is already on the road to success by achieving co-rookie of the year, and he appeared in the Olympics. James is expected to be a champion, but he may not have what it takes to become a real champion such as Michael Jordan was. Before Jordan or James can be categorized as a champion, they have to be able to handle pressure, fame, and maintain a positive relationship with their team. When comparing Jordan and James’ clutch capabilities, or their ab...
In “Don’t Lower the Bar,” he compares the educational standards difference with an athletic gap: “The best analogy I can give you is based in the fact that some coaches and athletic directions have noted a steep decline in the number of white kids going out for basketball. They feel as if they cannot compete with their black classmates. What if we addressed that by lowering the rim for white kids? What if we allowed them four points for each made basket?” (Pitts).
Research suggests a person’s height does not affect their ability to make a successful jump shot. The ability to make a successful jump shot be determined by the arc in which enters the rim of the basket. When a basketball enters the rim on a 45° angle with a backspin it increases the percentage of a successful jump shot. The height of a basketball player is key when the player is taller, they are able to make more successful defensive blocks and able to get more rebounds of the basketball.
Reggie Harding was the first high school player to make the jump from high school to the NBA, and he did this in 1963. He spent five mediocre seasons in the NBA and was never the special player that people thought he would have been. Since then, there have been around 40 high school players who have decided to skip college and declare for the NBA draft. The bulk of these players have come within the last seven to ten years. Out of these forty or so players, no more than ten have had a successful career. Last year seven high school players entered the NBA draft, and only one of those seven had a successful first season, and that was Lebron James (Smith).
There are so many different skills that are important to playing baseball and really make a difference in the game. These skills are speed, power, arm strength, agility, aim, coordination, knowledge of the game, and timing. Everyone can be good at one of these skills maybe more, but nobody is good at all of these skills. That’s why it takes a team to play baseball. It doesn’t matter if you are skinny, hefty, short, or tall. Any size or shape of person can be good at playing baseball. Some people say the same about playing basketball but, this is not true. You probably won’t make the basketball team if you can’t shoot a hoop. If you are short and slow you probably won’t be on a basketball team either, unless the team is really desperate. Although, if you are short and slow you can be a prime homerun hitter, pitcher, or 1st baseman. The possibilities are endless when it comes to playing
Attention Getter: “I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a Baller, I wish I had a girl who looked good I would call her.” That timeless phrase coined by Ski-Lo in the early nineties, resonates with so many of us because all of those goals are things that people relate to being successful. And while I can’t help you with the first and the last respectively, becoming a “Basket-baller” is quite feasible, with a little hard work.
As a 5’ 9’’ sophomore at Laney High, Jordan tried out for the varsity basketball team. However, he was not good enough to make the team and was passed over for another sophomore, 6’ 8’’ Leroy Smith. Jordan was heartbroken and quoted:
Becoming knowledgeable about the game will require one to study many films on basketball, watch games constantly, read books that have to do with the game and also one's position. Watching film on basketball includes having tapes from previous games and understanding what one could have done better. By doing this, one will be able to see how they can improve and then apply it to the next practice.Sitting down with someone that has higher IQ will also help tremendously because they will be able to explain and point out key techniques. By reading books, it will help raise one's IQ of the game and will help with game time decision making. Understanding the position being played is crucial. All five positions on the court have different contributions to the team which makes it significant to know your

foot two inches tall teenager. This of course not convincing himself he was attractive in any way. One man remembers, “He had dark black hair that he kept perfectly combed. He wore a lot of pastel colors in those days and was quite sought after by the opposite sex” (Fishgall 36). Secretly, Peck idolized the star of the varsity football team, praising and looking up to anything that he did. He said, “I was too shy to speak to him, but I used to watch him, admire everything that he did, and glow over his triumphs” (Fishgall 35)
Jump shots inside the paint are the big men’s forte because it takes a big man to shoot over a big defender. Great players who have mastered this art include Tim Duncan, Shaquille O’Neal, Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning and Hakeem Olajuwon. When these players get inside the paint, their size and skill enables them to utilize this shot to score.
...s called the triple-threat, it is very helpful, because you can shout, pass, and dribble from this position, and it makes your arms go around the ball so that it is hard for the defense to take it from you. The only basic thing you need to know about basketball is that you need to be able to dribble well enough to not turn the ball over to the other team. You also need to be able to look around the court while dribbling. Once you’re capable of doing these things you will be set to be a good ball player. But don’t forget without science we wouldn’t be able to accomplish these abilities
“The odds of a high school basketball player making it to the “next level” to play college basketball (DI, II, or III) is slim. In fact, only 3.4% of high school players go on to play college basketball. Taking it even further, only 1.2% of college basketball players go on to get drafted in the NBA” (Winters, 2016). There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. Those players are self-centered, they do not play for the team, and generally don’t play because they love the game. These are the types of players who don’t usually go on to play at the next level. On the other hand, there are the players that absolutely dedicate their life to the game of basketball just because they love the game. That is what coaches are looking for in a player, and that is the kind of player I am striving to be.
"To better monitor the training and diet programs of a basketball player, it must be first understood the components of the physique and body of them (Gerodimos, 2005)." From what we know is that centers have the highest proportional body mass compared to other positions whereas guards had lower body mass related to their height. The results from the research suggest that the "body composition characteristics in basketball may be specific to the position of the player on the court (Gerodimos, 2005)." Knowing this we can tailor the diet plan and workout routine for the player to increase their
If you were to ask my friends what I love to do, my guess is that the majority of them would come up with this reply, "He loves to play sports". Sports are a big part of my life, and if I had to choose my favorite sport to play it would have to be basketball. I couldn't imagine going a week without being able to touch a basketball, and I thought I would never have to. But on one summer afternoon, that all changed when I broke my leg. It left me on crutches for two months, and not being able to play basketball all that summer. At first I thought it wouldn't be so bad, getting all the attention and sympathy from everyone. However, after one game I soon realized that I would do just about anything to get rid of those horrible crutches and get back on the court.
