I obtained excellent collaboration skills while playing varsity basketball. I learned that using the skill of teamwork is a vital skill in order to achieve the common goal of success. Another skill I achieved while playing varsity basketball was the skill of communication. As a team captain, I learned how to communication effectively with my teammates. Through basketball, I learned that communicating is critical in order to resolve problems and grow as a team.
Karli, James and Scout, in their article (2013), “Economic Validation for Performance Improvement Initiative Based on a Strategic Team Development Campaign” pose the question, “Can team development increase revenue?” Such was their study conducted at a selected major casino, and they endeavored to sample the impacts on creating teams in an organization to boost revenue. The Casino’s executive management considered the values of implementing team-building aspects, in their endeavor to improve customer services and overcome low customer turnout, owing to the low spending trends of the customers (Karli, James & Scout, 2013). Besides, owing to the numerous emerging and current casinos offering similar services, team building would aid significantly in creating a competitive advantage. This compelled the management to implement teamwork within all the departments of the casino, from the top management to the lowest ranks of housekeeping.
I was able to see my teammates’ strengths and weaknesses. I knew if the person beside me was going to be able to get to the ball or if I needed to get it. When I get to know a person I automatically look at what they are capable of doing themselves and what they might need help with. This quality is what makes me a good leader. I understand that I am not the one to score all of the points in a basketball game. I know that I don’t have to slam the ball down in a volleyball match in order to get the point. I play with a leader mindset. I know that if I get the ball to one of my teammate’s, she has the ability to drive in and score. I know that if I tip it to the outside hitter of the other team, she will be too slow to get to the ball, resulting in a point for my team. This quality also carries over into other aspects of my life such as group projects or Bible Bowl competitions. I am so grateful that I developed this mindset because I know how to make a group of people
John wooden a former player and later became a basketball coach once said. “A coach much never forget that he is a leader and not merely a person with authority.” Basketball has been something in our everyday lives for a while. To allot it something they just can't live without and others just choose to not even bother with it. I think that it is worth the time to look more into basketball. Basketball can be started at a elementary school level, and they can usually go to sign up at local boys and girls clubs maybe at their school if they offer it and can even join through their church if they attend one and they offer it to them. Being a coach seems easy to most parents but it really isn't how it isn't is a coach must ensure that players
Exercise is an activity requiring physical effort, carried out to sustain or improve health and fitness. (Oxford Dictionary, 2017) The Australian Government guidelines recommend adults do at least 30 minutes of moderate to intensive physical activity on most or all days of the week. (Australian Government, 2014) The benefits of exercise are extensive which can include social, physical and mental benefits, however, many people do not achieve the required amounts, for a number of possible reasons.
Teamwork is the combined action of a group of people, especially when effective and efficient. Any group of people could form “teams”, but when you form a group where everyone can work together and teach each other things such as self-respect and self-confidence, you have teamwork. When everyone is struggling, why not help each other out? Coach Ken Carter in demand of respect and commitment transforms a group of teenage boys into a group of young men in the movie Coach Carter. The fact that Coach Carter had transformed this group of boys is not why I enjoyed this movie. My interest moves more towards how he transformed these boys. He taught these boys to value themselves not only as a team, but also as individuals. He also taught them to look at something more than the moment at hand; and look more into the future.
High school basketball is not only a mental sport, but, also, a communication game. You must be able to communicate very well to play in Morgantown, West Virginia, especially at University High School. To make the team, you have to be basketball knowledgeable, talented, physically fit, and vocal. After four years of playing varsity basketball, the vocal part of the sport has helped me out in the long run.
A high school girls’ basketball team is made up of many different individuals with very different personalities. These different personalities lead to different roles on the team. These roles are evident on most teams, and each personality type contributes to the function of the team; however, some roles are not as beneficial as others.

Being part of the basketball clique in high school helped me learn the intrapersonal and social communication skills I use today. As a child playing basketball was my favorite activity or hobby. It's also the way I met a lot of my good friends that I have now. All my close friends I have met. I have met them through playing basketball.. Whether they were on my team, the opposing team or just fans in the crowd who admired my play. Not only has basketball helped me gain friends, but basketball also taught me a lot about life. There are many aspects of life that coincide with basketball. For instance basketball is a team game and an individual game. Like in life you have to work together with other people. The communication skills I learned from basketball helped me communicate with friends, girlfriends, parents and bosses at work.
Being the volleyball setter and basketball point guard, my coach relied on me to lead the team to work together. Striving to bring the best out of my teammates, I push everyone to be their best. Being a leader of a team, my teammates and coaches often looked upon me when a stressful environment approaches. I possess the trait that shows a fearless mentality; therefore, when times are tough, people look up to me on the court. This allows people to trust and follow my judgment.
Basketball a sport that is played throughout the whole world. When playing this sport all you need is a ball and basket. Though the basket does have to be a certain height kids play it in their classroom or outside. What I mean by this is that kids and even adults in the office treat a trash can as a basket and whatever their trash is as a ball. I got interested in this sport when I was in middle school in eighth grade moving on to high school. I was never interested in basketball until I played it with a group of kids who today are still my friends.
Participating in team sports is important not just for health reasons, but also for your healthy intellects and emotions. Playing sports that is in range of the player’s interest helps relieve stress and maintain their mental health. A team is mostly about unity within the team and with the coach, so no one can be selfish. Therefore playing in team sports develops good characteristics within oneself. Being part of a team sport should help create the opportunity to gain meaningful insight into one's leadership, social and cognitive development. Team sports helps build good character because they teach athletes discipline and how to have good sportsmanship. Chatterjee and Jatta declared that human beings learn and work together in various professional
This guideline prevents student athletes from receiving bad grades and failing classes in school while playing sports. Sports help teach certain skills like reading, understanding, decision making, team work, and execution under pressure. Reading and understanding are needed to learn and know the plays. Strategically, decision making is part of the game. Winning requires making smart decisions any time you are on the court. One example may be making a decision to shoot a three-point basket when time is limited in order to win the game. Learning to work with others through team work transfers to being able to work with adults and peers in the real world. Teamwork is the foundation to the business world in achieving goals. Playing school sports also opens the opportunity for the student to receive scholarship money for college. The student must balance school work with school sports. Time management allows him or her to avoid disadvantages, such as team elimination or not having enough time for homework. On the other hand, playing basketball is a waste of time if the parent only wants the child to receive a scholarship and the child doesn’t. In defense, skills learned in basketball benefit the student by opening the expansion of his or her
Also, to acquire those skills, players must have plenty of practice. Basketball is an extremely quick game, and people won’t be capable of stopping the game and thinking exactly what to do and how to adjust their shot during the game. Therefore, athletes must develop muscle memory, which is doing something naturally with no thoughts, akin to riding a bike or walking. Muscle memory is developed by doing something repetitively. Hence, in a basketball game when the clock is running down, all what’s on the player’s mind, is shooting the ball and hearing the beautiful, striking sound of the net,
Charles Barkley once said, “If you are afraid of failure you don’t deserve to be successful.” In the sport of basketball there areThe 5 positions in basketball which are the point guard, the shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center.
