The Basilica of the Annunciation is, according to tradition, the place where the Archangel Gabriel came down to the Virgin Mary. The Basilica is located today in Nazareth, Israel. “The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin” (Lk 1:26-27). The angel told Mary she was going to conceive a child that she would name Jesus. Mary was confused because she had no relations with anyone. Then Gabriel explained that she would conceive through he Holy Spirit. And so the baby will be the Son of God the Father. Mary responds by totally submitting to the will of God. “Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord, may it be done to me according to you word.’” (Lk 1:38). The Basilica is built over the ruins of Byzantine and Crusader churches. It also enshrines the cave in which Mary received the news. The cave has become an important pilgrimage site for many Christians. Early records of Nazareth are very rare. Eusebius says that Nazareth was a little Jewish community in the middle of the Roman and Byzantine times. Evidence of Jews converting to Christianity are given to us by Africanus. The Basilica was identified as the place of Jesus’ conception in the fourth century. …show more content…
and reference a church in 570 A.D. A Byzantine church has been discovered underneath the Basilica dating to the 500-600s. Under the direction by his mother St. Helena, Constantine commissioned this church, which lasted until the First Crusade. The third church was a Crusader church, built above the destroyed Byzantine church. It was much bigger, having two stories and some monasteries attached or nearby. At the end of the Battle of Horns of Hattin in 1187, the townspeople fled to the church, but unfortunately all of them were murdered. The church was therefore defiled, but the invaders left the building itself

Jerusalem was the main and last goal for the crusaders, the city was protected only by an army of a thousand soldiers, so the city fell raver quickly. On the 7th of July 1099 the knights reached the city, but on the 15th they already captured it. The whole Jewish diaspora was killed as well, they all gathered in the big synagogue, where crusaders burned them with the church itself. Nearly 10 thousand Muslims were killed in the Dome of Rock. The murders were sometimes stopped with prayers, than the crusaders continued their "holy" slaughter.
One of the key scenes that is taken from Luke is Mary’s visit from Gabriel (Holy Bible: King James Version, Luke 1: 26 -37) Mary is sitting under a tree when Gabriel appears to her as a man dressed in white. Gabriel begins to speak telling her that she has “found favour with God” and that she “will give birth to a son and will call his name Jesus.” As in Luke Mary asks how this is possible as she has been with no man. Gabriel then explains to her that the Holy Spirit will come upon her and that the child will be the son of God. He also tells her of her cousin Elizabeth’s pregnancy, and then states “For nothing said by God is impossible.” Mary then proceeds to kneel before Gabriel and says “Let it be done to me according to your word.”
This book gave me the insight where this beautiful Gothic cathedral was located at and how it is associate with the Virgin Mary.
Christ was crucified at but it is also believed that it was where he was buried and then resurrected. Because of this belief, the church has become the foremost pilgrimage site for the Christian religion. The church that stands today is a reconstruction of the original church because the church was damaged throughout the years by fire, invasion, and earthquakes. The original church was rebuilt during the middle ages when an agreement was reached between the Fatimids and the Byzantine Empire. The tomb itself is empty of course but millions come to the church to pay their respects to the religious figurehead.
The ability to create a picture of The Annunciation in one’s mind is a key factor in understanding the analysis of the work. Francisco de Zurbaran approaches the painting with a naturalistic style. The painting features a room in which a woman – like angel is seen at the left kneeling on the ground before the Virgin Mary. The figure of Mary is placed between a chair and a small wooden table draped with a green cloth. Mary disregards an open Bible on the table, as she appears solemn while staring at the floor. Floating above the two main figures in the upper left side of the painting are cherubs resting on a bed of clouds. They happily gaze down at Mary with eyes from Heaven.
This cave is a stable and Jesus was born in a stable. This is the place where the messiahs saw daylight for the very first time in his life. The houses in the background are probably part of Bethlehem.
The first Christian Cathedral to be built on the site, dedicated to St. Paul was in 604 AD under the rule of King Aethelberht I. Historic reports show that the initial church was destroyed by fire. In 675-685 AD the church was replaced and demolished by Viking raiders in 962, and another one was raised in 1087 AD to stand on the same place.
In 1054 the Church split into the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox. Sixteen years later, the Turks conquered Jerusalem and started to attack the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantines sent a letter to the west asking for help. Pope Urban II read it and then called for the first Crusade to take back the Holy Land. Thousands marched to the Holy Sites and conquered Jerusalem.
In the background through the loggia in which the Virgin Mary stands, a town on a hilltop can be discerned. Numerous details of Arcadian activities are in the background, including a woman drawing water from a well and a sort of gathering or feast. However, it also appears that there is a battle playing out in the town. The villagers look blissfully unaware, but there is some indication that some of the warlike riders are coming towards the rustics. The wonderfully detailed background provides a startling juxtaposition to the heavenly scene playing out in the focus of the fresco. Tiny black riders thunder towards the town’s gate, while the cities defenders poke their spears out before them, the battle is about to commence. A man, just a dark blob at this distance, lays prostrate on the ground taking the blows of the two fighters standing over him. All of this plays out in the background of the holy scene of Annunciation. More than any other aspect of the fresco, this brings this heavenly event down to earth. As the Archangel Gabriel informs Mary of the imminent miracle of immaculate conception and the coming of Jesus Christ, men battle and people live out their lives behind
Bryan Byerly Mrs. Wagner Western World 10 Seminar- 4 4 December, 2013 Christianity in Rome Essay Christianity became more prevalent in Roman society as time went on because it appealed to Rome and what Roman ideals were. In the beginning Romans were skeptical of changing religion, but as the years went by, the Romans adopted and changed. Christianity appealed to the Roman ideals, as it gave certain perks that their current polytheistic religion did not offer to them. The emperors of Rome had many different views on Christianity; some emperors encouraged change, and others were more traditional and wanted to stick to their current, polytheistic religion. Roman views on Christianity have changed drastically from the early years of the Roman

The birth narrative of Luke begins with the announcement of the birth of John, whose mother was Elizabeth. An angel came to Zechariah, Elizabeth?s husband and the angel said that his son John would be in great sight of the Lord that he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even in his mother womb and he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. In the sixth month the angel Gabriel...
Gambling involves taking a risk. It’s something that gets our adrenaline pumping. There are well accepted accounts from the bible that Christians and others never question. Events and locations that are part of the story told of Christ and his history. One such is the account of John 1, of the birth of Christ in the lower Galilee town of Nazareth. This town is not mentioned at all, in the old testament, nor in any of the extensive rabbinical literature, and the only established site there, is the ancient town water well. Now refered to as (no surprise) as Mary's well. The modern town is covered with churches also no surprise, and although modern archeology can offer no support at all for them the Nazarenes can point out sites such as Joseph's carpentry shop, the spot where Mary received the annunciation as well as the exact location of mensa Christi, the table at which Jesus dined after his resurrection and the site of the synagogue where Jesus preached as a you boy.
