Symbolism is thought of to be one of the most important parts in a novel. Barney’s Version by Mordecai Richler demonstrates how symbols can reveal significant aspects of a character's personality. Symbolism in a novel develops character’s personality and how they act. The results from the symbols can bring one success or failure in later years of their life. Barney Panofsky is the central character in this novel. He was married three times and all marriages had difficulties because of the symbols in this novel. The first important symbol is money. Money affects his three relationships and Barney’s mental state. The second significant symbol in this novel is alcohol. three marriages. Alcohol also reveals Barney’s arrogant and rude personality. Money and alcohol clearly altered Barney’s personality throughout the novel. In the novel, Barney’s Version, the symbol of money reveals important aspects of Barney’s personality.
Money impacted all of Barney’s relationships in a negative way. Although money wasn’t a problem for him, he didn’t use his money in the correct ways. His wives were not impressed with how he was spending his money. He spent most of his money on alcohol. Since he bought massive amounts of alcohol, his personality changed frequently. All three of his wives did not like that he drank so much. He also spent a lot of his money on cigars. He smoked a few cigars a week and his wives also did not like it. The second Mrs.Panofsky comments “Oh I'm so ashamed. So broken. And you are such a liar. Such a street person. Such an animal. Go ahead. Finish your bottle. Good night” (Pg.286, Richler) She expresses that she is mad at Barney for buying more alcohol and finishing it all in one night. divorce. Money also affected Barney’s personality by making him very lonely. Money is supposed to bring one happiness but with Barney, it brought him nothing but loneliness and sadness. Barney is having troubles emotionally and turns to alcohol once again. Money usually represents power but in this situation it means nothing. Barney’s personality starts to deteriorate as the book progresses because Barney is finding it difficult to find happiness within himself. At the beginning of the book, Barney was hoping that Money would make him happy but he was wrong. Money did nothing but destroy Barney. Richler indicates throughout the novel that money does not buy happiness. Another important symbol in Barney’s Version alcohol.
Alcohol changed Barney’s personality throughout the novel. Barney’s consumption and addiction to alcohol affected his marriages in a horrible way. His consumption of alcohol is very abnormal. He will drink wherever and whenever he can. Since money isn’t a problem for him as he’s rich, he will buy massive amounts of alcohol whenever he has the chance. All of his relationships ended in divorce because of his alcohol problem. None of his wives liked that he was always drunk. When he is drunk, he is very arrogant towards everyone. He would not think before he spoke and most of the time said something very rude or try to start an argument with someone. Miriam, his third wife states “...When you’ve had far too much too drink, like now, which is hardly flattering, you start looking for a fight.” (Pg.304, Richler.) Here, Miriam is referring to when Barney has gone too far with his drinking. When Barney is intoxicated, he shows a side of him that most people find
offensive. Also, alcohol reveals a negative side of Barney’s personality. Being intoxicated all the time changes how he acts. Barney became more offensive and rude as the book progressed. Barney comments every few pages “I think this bottle is empty.” (Pg.296, Richler.) Here, Barney lets the reader know whenever he has finished another bottle. After he states that he has finished a bottle of alcohol, the reader can notice a change in Barney’s actions and words. He becomes brutally honest and does not think of the repercussions that could occur from what he is saying. Barney’s drinking problem leaves him with barely any friends and with three failed marriages. He begins to depend on alcohol and he lets alcohol control his life. Barney does not care that alcohol is controlling his life, it seems as though he enjoys it. If Barney did not drink, he would be a completely different character. Alcohol symbolizes the truth and Barney’s issues. Barney’s Version by Mordecai Richler displays how imagery and symbolism reveals significant and important aspects of a character’s personality. The symbols money and alcohol affect Barney’s personality in negative ways. Money leaves Barney very lonely. Money is supposed to bring people happiness but it only brings Barney saddest. He spends his money in the wrong ways which also lead him to failure later in his life. Alcohol brings out the truth about Barney’s personality. He becomes brutally honest and tries to start arguments when he is drunk. Alcohol ruined Barney’s opportunities and ruined his three marriages. In conclusion, symbolism and imagery in the novel Barney’s Version by Mordecai Richler reveals significant aspects of Barney’s personality.

This portrays Po as both a humble and family oriented individual, by showing that he isn’t vain about his eye color and he also remembers why his brothers gave him that nickname a long time ago. These examples of symbolism that Cashore uses allows her to give subtle details about the characters without giving away all of the information about them in a direct manner. The portrayal of these characters could be greatly influenced through many uses of symbolism. Through the cases that the author Kristin Cashore uses, it allows the reader to gain more information on and connect to the characters Randa, Katsa, and Po on a deeper level.
“Let Them Talk!” written by Wayne E. Wright is an article that focuses on the idea of promoting English Language Learners (ELL) oral-language skills in the classroom instruction time to improve their literacy and academic achievement. Too often are an ELL’s speaking and listening skills overlooked and not given enough attention to, even though it is one of the most important parts of communication. Wright encourages teachers working with ELL students to allow time for the student to adjust, not to pressure them into their language development, respect their various stages, bring them into whole class and small group discussions, correct simple language errors in speaking that impeded comprehension, and have them interact and communicate in the classroom for meaningful purposes.
Analyzing a symbol as a literary convention used by author, Junot Díaz makes a way to identify the purpose of the device. In his novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007), the mechanism is used to develop an explicit character and point of view. The symbol is a sensory image that holds rich implication that is either a narrow or broad. Occasionally the reader is cast off by the author with an unknown meaning of the symbol hence is forced to create his own interpretation. The latter principle is intentionally carried out by the author as a literary hook to draw the attention of his audience to keep reading. Moreover, the author may also use in combination with the hook the method of utilizing pathos as a way of arousing the emotions of his readership. Consequently, the author effectively brings into existence an impetus by which the reader will be controlled all due to a symbol. The use of a symbol as a literary convention in a novel creates a hidden significance. A literary convention, a symbol of faceless men, is used by Dominican-American writer, Junot Díaz to give connotation and shape to his novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.
Symbolism is what makes a story complete. In "The Great Gatsby" Fitzgerald cleverly uses symbolism. Virtually anything in the novel can
Symbolism is commonly used by authors that make short stories. Guin is a prime example of how much symbolism is used in short stories such as “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” and “Sur.” In both of these stories Guin uses symbolism to show hidden meanings and ideas. In “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” there is a perfect Utopian city, yet in this perfect city there is a child locked in a broom closet and it is never let out. A few people leave the city when they find out about the child, but most people stay. Furthermore, in “Sur” there is a group of girls that travel to the South Pole and reach it before anyone else, yet they leave no sign or marker at the South Pole. Guin’s stories are very farfetched and use many symbols. Both “Sur” and “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” have many symbols such as colors, characters, objects, and weather. The four types of symbols that Guin uses help the readers understand the themes in her short stories. Although her stories are farfetched, they need symbolism in them or the reader would not understand the theme; therefore the symbols make Guin’s stories much more enjoyable.
Symbolism is an important aspect in stories, whether big or small. Symbolism makes the reader think. It is used to represent something but does not reveal itself right away. Symbolism adds creativity to an already creative piece. Throughout a novel a reader may spend his/her time trying to conclude what each object in a story represents. Though not all stories have symbolism, those that do possess more excitement than those that do not. In the novella Aura by Carlos Fuentes, there is an extensive use of symbolism. James Hall wrote the article “Why You Should Use Symbolism in Your Writing” on symbolism that helps to describe why Fuentes’ use of symbolism is important in Aura. Fuentes uses symbolism to hide the climax of the story and also to
In “The Horse Dealer’s Daughter,” symbols are used to fulfill the quest of happiness and love. This love story has many symbols, which show hidden meaning. One can fully understand a story, if one can point out certain symbols. Symbols create ideas and images for the reader to better understand the story. (Symbol)Mabel, one of the two main characters in this story, is depressed and suicidal. After her mother died, she feels like there is nothing to live for. Her mother was the love and joy in her life; without her, she is lost. All she has left is her house, which she is extremely proud of, and her brother, which she seems not to care for. She decides to release herself from her troubles by drowning herself in a pond. The other main character, Dr. Fergusson, sees her and tries to save her life. This pond is a strong symbol with many meanings. It is a start of a new experience, and a change of two people’s lives.
Some of the main symbols of the novel are The Hanging Wall, the colours of the clothing of the different women and the Eyes. All these symbols add different features to the story which are important. Some add fear, suspense, and overall they all add an important understanding of the story line. Margaret Atwood, was able to successfully create symbols which added depth and helped with the understanding of the novel. With these symbols she used in the novel she proved the importance and the positive effects strong symbolism can have with plot and character
Symbolism is defined as the representation; treatment or interpretation of things as symbolic. In society and in particular, literature, symbolism is a prominent component that helps to illustrate a deeper meaning then perceived by the reader. Symbolism can be anything, a person, place or thing, used to portray something beyond itself. It is used to represent or foreshadow the conclusion of the story. In William Golding’s, Lord of the Flies symbolism of the main characters Ralph, Jack and Simon plays a very important role in helping to show how our society functions and the different types of personalities that exist. An examination of Simon as a symbol of good, Ralph as a symbol of the common man, and Jack as a symbol of evil, clearly illustrates that William Golding uses characters as a symbol of what is really happening in the outside world throughout the novel.
All through the novel there are symbols of
The Yellow Wallpaper is overflowed with symbolism. Symbols are images that have a meaning beyond them selves in a short story, a symbol is a detail, a character, or an incident that has a meaning beyond its literal role in the narrative. Gilman uses symbols to tell her story of a woman's mental state of being diminishes throughout the story. The following paragraphs tell just some of the symbols and how I interpreted them, they could be read in many different ways.
What comes to mind when one thinks of the word ‘puppy’? It is probable describe a puppy as a lovable, adorable, and cuddly companion. However, one might also identify the animal as a menace and a liability or even as a delicious source of food. Why does this single word hold so many meanings? One’s past experiences and biases influences these conflicting views and attitudes. For instance, an individual’s fond view of puppies may exist because they were raised with puppies and consequently grew affectionate toward the animals. On the contrary, if another individual has not bonded with puppies as pets, then they will share the latter point of view. In the short story “Puppy” by George Saunders, the multiple characters view single events and objects with contrasting perceptions. Therefore, instead of painting a precise picture of the characters and the plot, the story expresses several views regarding the morals of the characters, the motivations of their actions, and the meaning of the events that take place. In “Puppy”, George Saunders explores the theory that perception is not an elementary, universal definition of an object or idea, but a complex interpretation that is influenced by one’s unique and varying past experiences and opinions. The complexity of perception is evident in one the story’s narrator’s, Marie’s, vantage point.
Symbols are objects, characters, figures, or colors used to represent abstract ideas or concepts. Symbolism is your prospective of looking at an object or event. In the play “A Doll’s House” by Henrik Johan Ibsen there are objects and events that symbolizes people’s lives. We don’t see symbols in life; we only see them in novels and plays. In the play there are a lot of objects and events that symbolizes more than what they are. Like the Christmas tree is used for decorative purposes in real life, but in this play it can be compared to Nora Helmers feeling. Other symbols include of “The New Year”, “the title of the play” and “Nicknames” Torvald calls Nora. Although we don’t think about simple things, they might have a deeper meaning to it.
