She came on the scene in 2005 with her debut album Music of the Sun; the first single released from that album was “Pon the Replay.” This single was very fun and playful with a reggae, dance hall vibe to it, and the music video reflected this as well. With the release of her sophomore album A Girl Like Me came a lot more exposure, and the first single off that album “SOS” became her first billboard top 100 single. Though she had some success with her first two album, it was with the release of her third studio album that skyrocketed her to fame, and made her a household name. The single off her third album that put her on the map worldwide was “Umbrella.”
Rihanna had already put out two albums between 2005 and 2006, but it was not until she went from a good girl to a bad girl that she started to achieve real success in her career. With the release of her third studio album in 2007, Rihanna reinvented her image and her style of music. She has collaborated with artists such as Kanye West, Shakira, and Wale. After the release of her third studio album Good Girl Gone Bad, a lot of her songs seem to take on a darker tone. The decision she made to revamp her image and musical genre seems to have catapulted her career into the stratosphere. Is it possible that humans around the world resonate more with things that are bad? It may very well be that we are more in touch with our darker side than we would like to admit because we all seem to find her more interesting now after she has gone through this change than we did at the beginning of her
In 2013, the self-titled visual album BEYONCÉ sold almost eight hundred thirty thousand digitally in the first three days, while her sixth number one and second visual album, Lemonade, only sold four hundred ninety thousand digitally in the first week. Although Beyoncé’s second visual album wasn’t numerically successful, both show a vulnerable, an artistic, and a controversial side of Beyoncé. Both albums have surprising visuals and stunning lyrical content with either an obvious meaning or a meaning we have yet to figure out, such as the famous line, “You better call Becky with the good hair.” (Beyoncé, “Sorry”). BEYONCÉ and Lemonade show that Beyoncé tries to better herself as an artist and make herself more vulnerable.

Whitney Houston is considered as one of the greatest singers of our generation. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, she holds the record of being the most rewarded female artist of all time. I chose her as my topic, because she represents resiliency and tenacity, despite her troubled experiences with drugs and her personal life. Whitney Houston comes from a family with an amazing, musical pedigree; her mother, Cissy Houston, was a successful back-up singer for Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. Dionne Warwick is her first cousin and Aretha Franklin is her godmother. In 1983, Houston was signed to Arista Records and music executive, Clive Davis, became her mentor and helped launch her successful career. Whitney Houston was known as the innocent, girl-next-door, who promoted positivity and love within her professional career. Houston's good-girl image was shattered, when she married R&B bad boy, Bobby Brown in 1992. Towards the late 90's, it was rumored that she was using drugs and she looked very thin. In 2006, Houston divorced Bobby Brown and entered into rehab, to end her addiction to cocaine and other drugs. The world was happy to see her healthy and singing again; everyone thought she had made a full recovery and was ready for her to appear back into the spotlight. Tragically, on February 11, 2012, Whitney Houston was found dead in her Beverly Hills hotel, she was 48 years old. Her mother, Cissy Houston, has written a book about her daughter's life, entitled: Remembering Whitney, which depicts the rise and fall of the tragic singer's life.

After going through the abusive relationship with Chris Brown, Rihanna has struggled with gaining that strong confidence in who she is.
