In order to consolidate this module, I observed 5 girls in a private ballet studio, during a pre-primary ballet class, and 6 girls playing together in a sandpit during their free play period at a private Jewish Day nursery school. The girls in the ballet class were between the ages of five and six years old, and the girls at school were between the ages of four and five years old.
During the ballet class, the ballet teacher was present. She needed to control the class, manage the behaviour, and make sure that the children all did as they were told. The teacher was there to do most of the exercises with them, as they are still young and are not able to remember the entire syllabus by themselves. Although the teacher was doing most of the exercises with the students, it was also important for her to pay attention to each individual child and give them feedback when necessary. The ballet studio is a big hall, with a stage in the front. There is a lot of floor space for the children to move around freely, however they tend to bunch together as they lack special awareness. In other ballet studios that I have visited, there are many mirrors, which were lacking from the studio in which I did my observation. I found this to be a disadvantage, as children benefit from watching themselves.
The girls which were observed at school were observed during free play, and therefore the teacher who was present avoided any involvement with them. The sandpit is situated in the centre of the playground and is a popular choice for the children. They are provided with many buckets, spades, trowels, funnels, and many other sandpit toys. This task was beneficial in assisting me to gain an understanding and insight of the needs of a child, and was a valuable way to consolidate this module.

The Child Development Center of College of San Mateo provides early care and educational programs for children between the ages of 3 to 5 years old. Children are divided into classrooms with a “master” teacher, a “regular” teacher, and two or three “associate” teachers. Klara attended Classroom, “A,” a stimulating and well-resourced classroom. Klara was observed for two hours on Monday from 9 am to 11 am and for two hours on Wednesday from 9 am to 11 am. During these two hours, classroom activities consisted of “free time,” “story time,” and an outside “play time.” A “master” teacher, a “regular” teacher, and two “associate” teachers were present during observations. Additionally, a total of eighteen children were in attendance during the observed days.

The discussion of children and school also gives well meaning of an organized and well-balanced village the people have put together, one the average parent would want their children raised in. “They tended to gather together quietly for a while before they broke into boisterous play, and their talk was still of the classroom and the teacher, of books and reprimands (p.445).” The thought of children playing also illustrates of a positive outlook for the rest of the story, a sense of happiness.

The role of teachers in employing these theories in their work is to design and plan their curriculum to stimulate children’s learning and cognitive development through play. Educators are acting as the stage manager. They are required to schedule some time for children to participate in open-ended, self-initiated free play. They need to set up environments for play, planning schedules with enough space, materials and time for children to play. For instance, an early childhood teacher has decided to let children play with sand in a day. She /He needs to set up the sand center in a safe area and supervises children fully to make sure that children are playing safely. She /He needs to provide sufficient supply of tools and materials to use in sand so that every child have adequate choices to choose the tools they want. Rather than divide the tools for children, the educator make children do their own choices and therefore children can gain some sense of control. When children are playing with sand, the educator should observe each child carefully, encouraging them to solve the problems themselves and consider their feelings (Crosser, n.d.).
