“Land of the free and the home of the brave.” This line has represented the United States for decades. These words were captured in The Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key and since 1913, the United States has adopted The Star-Spangled Banner as its national anthem. We have used the Red, White, and Blue as one of our nation’s symbols. It has fifty stars, to represent the number of states we have in our Union. The military pledges its allegiance to the flag and the country which it represents at all costs. We are the land of the free and the home of the brave, and we are proud to show it.
Rhetor’s since the days of Aristotle and Isocrates have been using their rhetorical situations to deliver messages with a sense of urgency and persuade others to see their point of view. In 1933, Luther Standing Bear published his book “Land of the Spotted Eagle”. In this book, he talks about the terrible conditions under which his people live and how it needs to change. He speaks specifically to this in the excerpt “What the Indian Means to America”. Here he is referencing the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. Standing Bear talks about how the European Americans caused these disasters and how the Native American could be the solution to these problems. He uses his rhetorical situation to try and convince the American government to listen
Animals are often used by authors of novels and short stories as literary symbols. In "Greenleaf," a short story by Flannery O'Connor, a bull is used to represent Jesus Christ. O'Connor does this according to how the bull looks, how it is rejected, and how it seems to offer grace to Mrs. May.
A symbol is a unique term because it can represent almost anything such as people, beliefs, and values. Symbols are like masks that people put on to describe their true self. I have never had a brother, but if I did, would I look up to him or would he look up to me? This question comes to mind when I read James Hurst's "The Scarlet Ibis," Hurst's short story is realistic fiction, but it seems as if it's non-fiction. "The Scarlet Ibis" is about a boy and his crippled younger brother. Brother wants a younger brother, but when Doodle turns out to be crippled, he tries to teach him how to walk, swim, run, and fight out of his own selfishness. Along the way, both Brother and Doodle feel may conflicting emotions. In the end, these conflicting emotions lead to the unfortunate death of Doodle. Hurst uses symbolism to reveal the conflicting emotions of both Brother and Doodle.
...o captivating. Additionally, it does make an extensive number of appearances at various ceremonies and great events, such as the opening ceremonies of sporting events and national holidays such as Independence and Memorial Day. However, “The Star Spangled Banner” embodies a much broader and more abstruse, cryptic connotation. It illustrates America’s attitude of perseverance when facing seemingly indomitable adversities or unachievable ambitions. It represents America’s unfaltering faith, traditional values, and ethical laws that have come to characterize America’s individuality. It signifies America’s past, a historic reminder that unites the people and instills, in their hearts, a profound sense of patriotism and glory. Most of all, “The Star Spangled Banner” symbolizes the truth of what America truly means–“the land of the free and the home of the brave”.

What is the American flag and what does it represent? For many Americans the flag represents freedom, pride, and justice. Our flag stands for freedom because of the many lives that had to be lost throughout history for us to be the nation we are today. The American flag stands for pride because of the many American soldiers men and women who lost their lives for us. Lastly, our flag stands for justice because in the United States no matter what crime we do we have the right to a fair trial.
Ken Kesey’s novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” is a story about a band of patients in a mental ward who struggle to find their identity and get away from the wretched Nurse. The American Flag may not look like much but it stands for the loyalty that every citizen in America has for their country. It resembles many people's love for the place they live. This symbol represents the notion that freedom should be free flowing and should not be interrupted other than for the reasons that arose in the constitution. This is because men are born free and neither religion nor social grounds should be reason enough to deny that freedom. When the founding fathers embedded freedom into the constitution, they intended it to be passed on to generations after generations for eternity through the. The national freedom party seeks to restore the same vision by ensuring that the basic human inheritance, individual freedom, is protected for generations to come. This mandate resonates with the wishes of many Americans (Saad, 2013).
Lord of the Flies is a novel that is all about symbols that have different powers which is used on the boys. Two of the symbols which are the conch and the sow’s head contain powers that are opposite of each other and they have a great affect on the boys. Lord of the Flies would be a different story without symbols. The conch has the powers that lead to civilization and order. It represents the authority that the boys will need to get rescued from the island. The sow’s head on the other hand represents the evil powers to lead the boys to total chaos and savagery which is created by Jack. Jack has used one of the sow’s head’s symbolism which is the beast to control his group. The conch has a power that is used for order and civilization, while the sow’s head has a power to control evil and savagery.
The main idea of the story The Great Eagle is to “stay persevered”. I know this because in the book, on page 27 Noshen says, “I am hot and thirsty. There are beads of sweat on my nose. I am getting tired but I do not slow down.” If Noshen did not stay persevered he could not reach his destination or goal. Another example is evident on page 30 when Noshen says, “I do not move, not one part of my body. Oh, how I want to hold on to Grandfather. But I do not. My heart is pounding like the beat of the drum.” when facing the Eagle. If Noshen did not stay persevered he would never get to experience the eagle in a unique and different way. The last example is from my own connection. My connection is that, I made it to the girls volleyball team only
On most occasions, an object can be more clearly explained to the reader if the writer uses a symbol to represent it. In politics, flags, banners, acronyms, and pictures can be used as a symbol. For example, the United States flag contains fifty stars, each star representing a state. It also contains thirteen horizontal stripes. These stripes signify the thirteen colonies. Symbols are also used in math operations, shapes, and sets of numbers. For instance, in the equation 20+10=30, the + symbol is used for addition, and the = symbol is used to show the answer for the equation. Colors may also be used as a symbol. In some countries, the color white represents purity while the color black embodies evil or mourning. Colors, in some ways, can represent the tone or mood of something.
