Balancing Family, Work and School
Today, students have more than school to concentrate on. Students have work and families on top of going to college. This balancing act takes a lot of skills to keep on top of everything. There are a few key factors to keep in mind to continue to achieve the goal of continuing their higher education. The main keys to strive to balance work, school and home life are: time management, a support system, and finding ways to relieve stress.
Whether a student goes to college full or part time, setting a schedule to manage time will make it easier for the students. The student needs to balance the time to study, do homework, work a full or part time job, and family life. Time management allows the student to prioritize and organize the details of their day or week. As an online student that works 40 hours a week and has a family, I find that scheduling certain days for school work is best for me. For me, I have certain days and times that I do household chores like grocery shopping and laundry. By having a schedule, it helps to plan and balance the workload. For some students finding the right balance can be more difficult. Getting others involved like parents or work managers to enable students to work around other tasks. A support system can be parents, spouses, children, or friends. With a support system, the student has someone to help with the household responsibilities and someone there to help the student to strive to achieve their goals. Their support system is the one that helps with the balance of everyday life and cheers the student on. The support can also come from a source like a school or church group. A support system also offers emotional support for the student. For example, my husband and family are my support system. They pick up the slack with the household chores and offer the emotional support I
Scheduling and planning are necessary to be successful as a working student. Setting time aside for school assignments is a priority, but it is also important to build in personal time for you, your family, and friends (Blais & Hayes, 2011). S...
College is a new setting for most students, especially the ones no longer living at home. The transition can be easy and worry-free, or a challenging and stressful time. Brougham states, “Growth and change were often accompanied by the experience of stress. The cause of stress varies from person to person. Overall there can be similarities such as ’academics, social relationships, finances, daily hassles and family relationships’ (Brougham, 2009, pg 86). As student, academics is the reason why we are in school; we are aiming to get educated and to learn. Family relationships vary from student to student depending on how close the family is. My immediate family and extended family have such a close bond that when I am needed at home, I drop everything for them. Social relationships are smaller support systems individuals can count on. Finances all come down to economic status and a person’s unique financial aid package. Daily hassles range from what I should wear today to not having enough time in a day.
A social support system is a network of family members, friends and different types of organizations a person belongs to. These social support systems can be tied to the individual based on the persons age, gender, relationships, number of years known and have close ties to the geographical proximity one lives in. These support networks provide emotional and instrumental support. Some of the benefits of these networks include emotional support which include a sense of belonging, increased feelings of self-worth and feelings of security. Some of these social support networks provide instrumental support which include provided financial assistance, provide goods or services or even provide information and guidance. Instrumental support helps
There have always been various problems on how employees balance family life and work life. This is a problem that many employees from different organizations face. The challenge here is that they are not able to balance both lives. This in most cases leads to neglect of one life and giving too much attention to the other. This has been a major problem to many employees. They have always complained of how difficult it can be when a person tries to balance both lives (Philipsen & Bostic, 2010). This has been a big issue that should be tackled with a lot of concern. There has always been a need for people to be able to live comfortably with their families and to have a good working life in the work area. People should be taught on how to balance family life and work and to be able to give equal attention to both lives. This can be made possible by training and enlightening people on how these two can be achieved. There is need for all employees to learn how they ensure that they give equal attention to their family life and work life.
This calls a need for people especially students in college to warm up to the fact that if they are unable to manage their time appropriately while in school it is apparent that as they transition into their working life they will demonstrate the same effects still while on the job.
Having a support system can be very useful in many ways, and may mean many things to certain people. A support system is when there is trust with one
Support systems "Help the individual mobilize his psychological resources and master his psychological, emotional burdens; they share his tasks; and they supply him with extra supplies of money, materials, tools, skills, and cognitive guidance to improve his handling of his situation" (Caplan, 1974). Social support on physical and emotional comfort given to us by our family, friends, co-workers and others. It is knowing that people are part of a community of people who love and care for us, and value and think well of us. All people need a person who can depend on during both the good times and the bad. Maintaining a healthy social support network is hard work and something that requires continuing effort over time. Time management is a method of approaching life so that one can finish things on time without procrastinates. “A time management “system” is simply a way of coordinating days and activities so as to minimize stress while accomplishing more” (). A good time management system will reflect unique make-up as an individual so it is very crucial to find a structure that works efficiently. Time management is not only how to get more out of the time, but really how to become a organized person in life.
First of all, students who work part time will have a good time management. These students will have no difficulties from doing their duties and will have enough time for doing other things. Jibril (2012) claims in his article that students who have part time work and go to schools will be more prepared and planned. Students will have more duty and it will be mandatory for them to organize their times in order to complete their requirements. Moreover, it is important for students to manage their time so that it would be more easier for them to succeed in their study. Making a schedule to manage the students times helps them a lot, it is the best way to organize between studying, working and other activities. However, students who do not organize their time in a good way will get lost in their studies and work. Students with a part time job is more able to understand the value of time, so that ...
What do we know about time management? As adults we should know a lot about time management. We all strive to become the best that we can be. This alone should encourage us to learn about time management. Every aspect of our lives depends on it. If we try to plan, organize, and execute our ideas most of the time we can manage it well, but when we go the other route, and jump out there feet first, most of the time we do not do as well. This is not the case in every light, but usually it is the norm. Even as we sit in class trying to better ourselves by improving on our education, we learn that we must manage time to the best of our abilities. This is not done only for school, but for our families for those of us that have children and spouses. A lot of the time, we manage to get everything done and leave ourselves out in the cold when it comes to making time for ourselves. If it is not our job or school we are trying to meet someone else's needs.
Time management is one of the most crucial factors to college success for every student in college. Firstly, while living on campus, time usually isn’t an issue to students because they live on school grounds. There are many advantages that come with time and one of them is getting to class on time. However, this is actually the opposite for commuters because getting to class on time is quite a struggle. They have to struggle to wake up earlier than usual in order to use the public transportation. Students living on campus also have more access to on-site facilities because they don’t have to worry about going home so there is no time limit on how long they occupy these areas. An example is staying in the library because this is where you can get help from tutors on subjects you are struggling with. Also, they can use the writing center for as long as it is open without worrying about time. In contrast, commuters are limited to the use of these facilities because they have to take time into consideration while staying at the library or work...
Time management is not a new idea and many methods have been proposed regarding the best way to handle time management issues for business students. These suggestions can often be quite simple, such as writing down lists of things to do in order to support people in making good use of their time for work or recreational purposes. When time pressures are high, planning tasks and actions does not always lead to the completion of the work. It is in recognition of this that time management training programs have been designed, aiming to give an insight into the time required for activities, ways to make time plans, and increasing the efficiency of people by teaching them how to plan properly, how to prioritize tasks, and how to handle unexpected tasks. This is increasingly easy, particularly for students, as “books, articles, and time management training programs that were initially developed for managers have been made available to everyone”.(Claessens, Brigitte J.C. 2004).
Success in any aspect of life is reliant on time management, efficient time management. Time management is the key to successfully accomplishing tasks in accordance with a set schedule and reduces the likelihood of panic setting in. Many people believe that preparing a schedule to manage their time is a chose that itself eats up a lot of time. This may be correct to some extent in the short term but planning ahead will enable you to more easily achieve the outcome you have set in a more productive and time effective manner. When preparing a time management schedule there are some important points to consider:
In high school, students are responsible to get high grades in order to enter university and then choose their major. In school, students cannot pick the courses they want to study because it is mandatory. Class timing in high school is fixed and is schedules are not flexible. Most high school students are dependent on their teachers as well as their parents to remind them of their responsibilities. In university, on the other hand, students grow as individuals and they become independent. Their responsibility towards education becomes more valued to themselves because they are studying their desired major. Students must pick the courses that they are willing to study for every semester based on a guide. Not only that, but also they can choose the timings of the classes that suit them. University students are more aware of their own duties and responsibilities toward their studies. Therefore, they do not need parents reminding them of their own
Another important difference in students time management that is mainly affected by the learners motivation in school and at university. The motivation of school students is comes from parents and teachers, who reward or punish students for keeping up their studies. Students are unexpected to plan or do anything besides follow the timetable and study schedule from teachers. When a student moves on to undertake university study at undergraduate level, there is demanded to be more self-motivated and independent learning. Such as plan a learning programme that takes into consideration time available for study. As Marshall and Rowland (1993, 41) shown that, ¡¥if students are studying at a distance in tertiary education are needed to be particularly careful in setting priorities and balance a certain time between work and study, family and social life.
