What defines a bad teacher? Is a teacher really not fit for their positions or are the just ignorant to different ways to get their students to understand the material? I believe teachers are harshly criticized by the society. I believe however they do internships and student teaching they still need further education. Teaching is a hard job, teachers have to keep a class of on average of 28 students quiet and interested, plan lesson plans, and figure out a way to make the students get it. I believe teachers know the information however they do not know how to accommodate different students learning styles. When I was in first grade my teacher started to notice I had trouble with reading different texts and comprehending what I was reading. She informed my mother and the special education teachers that I would need extra help. They discovered that I was dyslexic and had an IEP. Just because someone is told they have dyslexia or and IEP doesn’t mean they can’t work through it. Financially my family was …show more content…
When I’d go home my mother would pour rice or flour on the kitchen counter and I would write out the words in the flour. I was a visual and hands on learner however writing the words on repeatedly didn’t help. Students learn in different ways so if we just wire teachers to accommodate one type of learning style then we are automatically minimizing how successful the rest of the class will be.

According to the textbook, “learning styles refer to the ways in which and conditions under which learners most efficiently and most effectively perceive, process, store , and recall what they are attempting to learn” (p.122). People have different learning style depending on how each person learn best based on interest and situation they are under. I am personally more visual and sensory in practical world than the theoretical matter. However, I can manage to learn both ways depending on what kind of information I am gaining and how it is presented to me. I have to be ready to learn and should be somehow interested on the information I am about to receive or in the process of receiving. Their hypothesis posits that there should be a correlation between a person’s preferred learning style and their corresponding level of learning. They premised their research on the assumption that “sound” evidence requires robust documentation from properly designed experiments, including appropriate control and treatment groups and a statistically significant difference between these groups. In other words, they set out to confirm whether certain instructional methods proved more effective for students with one specific “learning style” over another. Their research indicated that both children and adults express preferences about how information is presented to them and that people differ in the extent to which they have a preference for different ways of thinking and processing information. However, in their research there was no evidence for any correlation between one preferred learning style over another, thus failing the conditions for their hypothesis. Furthermore, in their review of literature they found very little in the way of experimental studies on the topic of learning styles despite the enormous amount of research supporting the concept. To determine the best way I learn, I carried out two different learning styles questionnaires online. One may find that they are not always categorised in a specific type rather they may have more than one learning preference. Firstly, the most commonly used Neil Fleming’s VARK model. Fleming believes that there are four different types of learner: Visual, Auditory, Reading/writing and Kinesthetic learners. The second model I tried out was Soloman-Felder Learning Styles and Strategies.
“A learning style is a way of learning and refers to the way that you learn new information” (2). Most people have one preferred learning style and perform to a lesser standard when learning in a different style than what they’re used to. Nowadays, children are told to take a quiz in school to determine what their preferred learning style is, but after a few years, not many of these children remember what their preferred learning style is, or even if they do, they don’t apply it to their learning.
We all do things at home that we would never do at work. It could be smoking, imbibing, and many more actions that are not accepted in the work environment but should we be penalized for doing these things outside of work? This urban legend sounds like a great idea but the problems with this idea are that not every individual understands what type of learning style they use, that the learning style is best for their education, and that most people don’t fit just one style of learning. Although there have been tests for people to discover their learning style those tests cluster learners in groups and do not account for students who have multiple learning styles. In the tests you would be placed in the area you scored highest even if there were multiple areas of learning styles present. The tests are not very reliable to group students in so they are inefficient to place learners in these categories of learning styles. Another problem with this educational strategy is knowing “how to tailor instruction to particular learning styles,” (174). It is difficult to tailor to each learners style and usually teaching must be done in a way to teach the majority because it is “more fruitful to focus on the fundamental things that learners have in common than on the myriad of styles on which they are different from each other,” (175). I’ve had teachers who taught in a way that was a good way for them to teacher, but wasn’t a good way for students to learn. I know I want to be a high school teacher, and by the time they will reach my class, my students should know how they should be presented the information, so that they can learn in such a way that is best for them. A teacher should be able to teach in a way that’s suitable for the majority of students, and be able to give extra help to those who don’t learn as the other students do. Each person has his or her own style of learning. Learning styles include visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. In the questionnaire, I learned that I am very much a visual learner. This reflection will show what I have learned about my unique learning style and how understanding learning styles of the children I teach will be helpful as I become a teacher.

In many times, teachers can help guide students into a better future. Characteristics like preparation, compassion, having and showing respect to students can make a teacher more effective.
My learning experience throughout grade school was cast in the Traditional method, employing rote, reward-and-punishment, and repetition, repetition, repetition. It was a one-size-fits-all approach, intended to instill good behavior as much as to instruct in the rudiments of reading, writing and arithmetic. We were not encouraged to participate in the process, unless, of course, we raised our hands, and were called upon to do so, and we were not to talk out of turn. We were to be passive and receptive. This was the “right” way to learn. It is a testimony to the great, unstoppable capacity of the brain to grow that many of us learned anything at all under those circumstances.
Schools were established to teach students the means of survival in preparation for a global economy. Education’s major objective today is to help increase our economy and prepare our students for future jobs. However, the progress of our public school education system in the 21st century has declined over the years. Other countries have exceeded our American Education system, especially in the areas of reading and math. Poverty stricken areas and minorities are being deprived of receiving a good quality education. Instead, only the fortunate and the lucky students are able to receive a good education. Families apply for the lottery scholarship in hopes to be accepted to a charter school as the key for to receive a good quality education.
There are many things which make a teacher great and they all can`t be defined.However i`ve always considered several of them essential.In my opinion a good teacher is someonewho first of all creates interest in studying,doesn`t underestimate the children,has equal expectations of siccess from everyone and last but not least likes his job.
There is so much to know about special education that is separate from teaching in a traditional classroom. One thing that has really stood out to me is how many acronyms and terminology these teachers need to know. IEP, LRE, IDEA, FAPE, IFSP, and that is just to name a few (DREDF, 2017). Special education teachers, really need to be knowledgeable about a ton of things. Not only all of the terminology associated with special education, but about disabilities and the best way to go about educating a child with disabilities. When working with children in special education, there will be students of all ages with all kinds of disabilities and different ability levels that you are teaching. It is important to know about each child’s disabilities, what they should be learning and how they should be learning it. There may be times that are challenging education students with disabilities, but when a teacher properly educates themselves on all the aspects of special education and the resources out there for them, it may help make your classroom run more smoothly and easier to
Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
