As with many charitable initiatives, there has been backlash from the public and the government, with many finding baby hatches to be immoral. There are those who believe that baby hatches rob babies of their basic rights, a violation of Article 7 of the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), which requires for children to be registered, and to be cared for by their parents to their greatest ability. Others believe that baby hatches would promote a irresponsible parenting ethic, with those who might just simply want to get rid of a child may dump her child. They fear that people will find baby hatches to be an easy solution to children they are able to, but unwilling to raise. These arguments are quite farfetched and irrelevant. …show more content…

Parents who do not leave their unwanted children in baby hatches simply find other ways to get rid of them, and this usually involves the death of the child. If there is no child, what child rights are there to protect? Yes, a child should know his parents, but a child should also have the right to live, and to be brought up with his best interests in mind (which happens to be Article 2 of the CRC). Is raising a child without knowledge of his birth parents really that undesirable, when you compare it to the alternative - death? Onto the second argument on irresponsible and selfish people who are capable of, but unwilling to raise their own children: no one will willingly abandon their child in such a manner. As mentioned previously, Asians value family. While the mother’s family may disapprove of the child, the mother has spent nine months carrying the child. There is no way that she would not feel a slightest bit of affection for her child. No mother will willingly give up her child unless she is truly desperate. Thus, the slippery slope argument that claims baby hatches will promote child abandonment are quite frankly,
