College students love to have fun at Buena Vista University. As many may already know, Buena Vista University has a reputation as a drinking college. Whether it is good or bad, a majority of college students are going to participate in drinking on the college campus and in the local community bars.
There are many reasons for partying and drinking on campus. Students could be celebrating a big win for the football team, or getting a good grade on a test. Students like to have a good time. Of the students who party and choose to drink on campus, a large majority of them like to go to the bars. The question is how to get to and from the bar safely?
Enjoying the Bar Scene
When people head to the bar they are looking forward to the quality social atmosphere. Malarkys, the bar most kids head to, is decorated with fancy neon lights, the quantity of other college students there, and the lively dance floor. Students also look forward to the ever so famous drink specials that are offered. The notorious bar for these drink specials is Malarkys. The reasons students may be attracted are as follows:
Wednesday nights are the famous nickel pitcher night, where anyone age 21 or older can get a pitcher of beer for only one nickel.
Friday nights=Free Beer. That’s right, from 9-11 p.m. anyone 21 or older receives free beer.
Saturday’s offer 1.00 mixed drinks and various other specials decided upon by management.
The BVU Rides Bus
With all of these specials offered and a lot of students excited to go enjoy them, the BVU Rides bus is relied heavily on by students heading to the bar. BVU Rides offers free rides from the college campus to Malarkys, the main bar college students go to, every fifteen minutes, from 10:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. The bus allows anyone to ride, but the bus only follows a predetermined route, with stops only at the bar and the college. Despite the fact that this is a good way for students to get to and from the bar, some members of the community think the BVU Rides is a program offered by the community that is not needed. Here are some of their ideas and our responses rebutting the citizens’ thoughts:
Some of the people in the community believe that the BVU Rides bus promotes students to go out and drink.
The company launched an initiative collaborating with the “Lyft”, which will provide free rides for drunk customers [8]. This indicates the amount of dedication the company has towards its customers. It also provides tours to customers across the 12 flagship breweries in the United States [9] and would also help customers with samplers. Any company that values its customers would become a great success and Anheuser Busch has proved this again. It also values its employees making sure every one of them feels like an owner and everybody would work as considering the results to be personal [10]. All these put together has helped the ANHEUSER BUSCH to brew beers that are loved by their customers and in making it the leader of its domain of
The issue at hand is that Duquesne University students are displeased with the transportation services available to them specifically the SGA Loop Bus. I believe Matt Liberatore speaks for the majority of students when he commented (about the Loop Bus) saying, “It is not as effective as it should be. They’re inconsistent, and aren’t enough prevalent as they should be.” Problems were evident from the beginning of its existence. The Loop Bus is a free service to students of Duquesne University that runs Friday and Saturday beginning at 5:00 in the evening and ending as early as 12:30 and as late as 2:30am. This leads to many cases of being stranded in unfamiliar places throughout the city. Matt also commented on how was inconvenienced during his freshman and sophomore years where he remembers waiting hours until another bus would come because the previous was too small.
This book had many things wrong with it. There were many problems with the writing styles and the research in my opinion. It was too long and too detailed, especially with the insignificant ideas in, which should not have been in it, such as the explanation of our campus, an insignificant detail. There was not a good comparison in the national average, Buena Vista University is a small campus in a small town, not similar to, say, the University of Missouri with a large student population and in the city of Columbia. The research was not well done and was unbalanced. This book was about the drinking at BVU found from the survey, not when some of the professors were attending.

United States and Mexico has a lot of differences and similarities between the two cultures. United States is different from Mexico because in Mexico the epidemics of obesity in adults are growing at a faster rate and has surpassed the United States. In Mexico the health condition rates are 32.8% compare to United States 31.8% of people who are overweight. One of the biggest problems with Mexico’s obesity rates comes from their “traditional high calorie foods that are fatty and fried.” (Grillo, I. 2009, August 29). Mexico consumes more “Coca Cola products than anywhere else in world. There are a total of 635 eight ounces a bottle per person each year.” (Grillo, I. 2009, August 29). Most citizens in Mexico said that “in many villages...
Firstly, one aspect that is both Mexican and American is the cuisine. The original food for Mexico is very spicy and most of the time very colorful as well. Mexicans use spices, peppers, tomatoes, and cheese in many of the native dishes. They use an assortment of meat: pork, beef, lamb, and chicken. When Mexican restaurants spring up in the United States the food is toned down to appeal to Americans. The Mexican Americans use less spices to make the dishes milder rather than the hot, spicy native food. The food, still Mexican, takes on the likeness of American food. This is shown in the United States by all of the Mexican American restaurants such as Taco Bell. Therefore Mexicans have Americanized their food. “For Hispanics live on this side of the border, where Kraft manufactures Mexican-style Velveeta, and where Jack in the Box serves Fajita Pita.” (Rodriguez 131). Americans complement the Mexican style and the inverse.
“Many of the so called Mexican foods that we love like hard-shell tacos, burritos, and nachos are a Tex-Mex creation.” Anglo people were the first to encounter these delicious Mexican cultures and cuisines, but Tex-Mex did not appear until the 1940s, but in the 1970s everyone mostly knew about Tex-Mex foods because “as more people settled in Texas or wrote for cook books (Diana Kennedy) Mexican food grew and grew. People tried to make these Mexican cuisines by using Tex-Mex foods which are considered to be: beef, yellow cheese (cheddar), wheat flour, black beans, canned vegetables, and cumin which are not common in Mexican foods. Beef and cumin were used in a lot of Tex-Mex creations. Like “beef was the meat choice
Just as people immigration to the United States from Mexico is bringing a part of their culture to the United States, people from other countries going to Mexico are changing their culture as well. The more European people that have moved to Mexico, the more the
...Mexican culture today. Combining the traditional and native ingredients, with the more modern ingredients of Europeans, Mexican culture food has found a unique character to it that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world. There are minor discrepancies in tastes and preferences that do occur from region to region, but this is something that is perfectly understandable, and it happens in almost all countries across the world.
This is often attributed to their Spanish colonialists. However, about 5% of the population can speak in other languages including Nahuatl and Mayan. Most of the citizens have adopted the Spanish culture. The dominant religion is Christianity even though other faiths exist (Miller, 2015). Mexico has a sophisticated and extensive culinary culture, with a myriad of regional cuisine. The main components of Mexican meals are beans, chilies, and corn. Corn is eaten in a multitude of forms. Mexicans value the family, and the father is the head of the household (Lira, Robson & Klooster, 2016). The country also has a long cultural history, and many old archeological sites are fund all throughout the country. A large number of Mexicans live in cities. However, a few of them reside in rural areas. The county is comprised of several ethnic groups. The Mexicans also consider hierarchy and business as critical. Essentially, their cultural attributes have been vital to the cohesion of the
Mexican cuisine is a fusion of indigenous Mesoamerican cooking with European, principally SpanisH elements. The basic predominant native foods such as corn, beans and chili peppers, but the Europeans introduced a large number of different foods, such as beef, pork, chicken, goat and sheep, farm products especially cheese and various herbs and lots of spices. Mexican cuisine is as complex as any of the great cuisines in the world, such as China, France, Italy and Turkey. It is crea...
Mexican food has a long history, it is believed to come from the mayan Indians. They were mostly hunters and gatherers and corn tortillas with bean paste was a common food item and they also ate wild game, topic fruits and fish. Spanish cuisine had a lot of indulgence and influence on Mexican cuisine. They brought garlic, dairy products , herbs ,spices, and wheat. Earlier mexico did not use ovens and heated food over open fire by using iron skillets and ceramic ware. Earlier a large amount of beans, avacados, and nopal cactus was used which is now replaced by tomatoes, chilli pepper and various types of corn formed the traditional Mexican cuisine. Barbacoa is usually a Mexican barbeque which is very different from that used today. It is basically steaming and smoking the meat. It adds a lot of texture, aroma and moisture to the meat. This method includes a cauldron filled with hot water placed on a coal bottom. A grill is placed on the top of it on which the meat piece is placed wrapped in maguey leaves. The meat is made with beans, spices, and various other vegetables that are then used for making the soup. Barbacoa today is reffered to as slow cooked
Mexico is traditionally known for their spicy dishes. Some of their main dishes are burritos, tacos, enchiladas, and tamales. Some of the main ingredients in Mexican cooking are corn, beans, avocados, tomatoes, chili peppers, and rice. Tex-Mex is a new Americanized form of Mexican food. Chips and salsa is not a traditional Mexican food, it is considered Tex-Mex. Another example of Tex-Mex are tacos that you tend to make at home. Normally when you make a taco at home, you make them in the crispy shells with meat and shredded lettuce, cheese, and topped with tomatoes. Real Mexican tacos are on a soft corn tortilla with meat, salsa, and topped with cilantro and white onions. Any of the packaged Mexican food items at stores are typically Tex-Mex, because it is very hard to have traditional Mexican packaged. Many Americans like Tex-Mex better than traditional Mexican food because it has adapted to their own food that they typically eat. Even in most Mexican restaurants, they serve Tex-Mex
People in Mexico have mouthwatering foods to eat and taste. A favorite food is Chorizo. Chorizo is a type of cooked sausage and in Mexico they add chili peppers on top to give it a spicy flavor. Another favorite food Mexicans eat are empanadas. Empanadas are a type of bread with chicken and vegetables stuffed inside. In every meal, you can usually find corn and beans. In most Mexican dishes there are chili peppers to give the dish a distinctive flavor. One of the most common peppers used in dishes is the jalapeno. The food of Mexico is very unique and fun to taste.
Audrey Saunders, the owner, preached “… In general, offering food and water and frequent check-in’s with one’s patrons is not just a good preventative—at the core, it’s simply responsible hospitality…It’s a bit narrowminded to think that a happy hour ban is going to drastically reduce problems” (Saunders 2-3). Saunders provided a weak stance in the matter presented of financial benefits to happy hour listing a raise in dollars from minimum wage to $15 an hour when happy hour would ensue. This statistic was paired along with other aspects of Logos, expressed an argument against the ban of happy hour. Saunders lifted an unrealistic solution to the matter of concern of drunken driving speaking to how as a bar owner, checking on the patrons as well as taking care of them is simply “responsible hospitality”. Saunders gives this solution as a possible replacement to the ban, having certified bartenders legally responsible and trained to judge customers who are too intoxicated to operate machinery. Overall, Saunders presented an argument in opposition to banning happy hour due to financial gains, however, it was not backed with strong enough evidence or statistic to convince me of her
