The Aztec created one of the greatest empires of the world. While there is a lot of information on how the Aztec came to occupy central Mexico, less is known about how the people actually got to central Mexico and the start of the Aztec culture. Numerous people consider the forgotten city of Aztlan to be the ancient origin of the Aztec. Some think Aztlan is a myth, like Atlantis or El Dorado, which will live on in myth but will never be found. Attempts to find the missing island have spread across Mexico and all the way up to Southern Utah. The formation of society at Aztlan comes from legend. There were seven tribes that lived in the seven caves of Chicomoztoc: Acolhua, Chalca, Tepaneca, Tlahuica, Tlaxcalan, Xochimilca, and Mexica. These …show more content…
The Chichimecas were considered to be less civilized than the Nahua groups. This may have been because they were still living in caves, wore animal skins, and used bow and arrows for hunting. The Mexica were the last group of the seven to arrive in Aztlan. In some accounts, the Aztlan is viewed as a paradise, but in others, such as the Codex Aubin, the Aztlan were under the rule of the tyrannical Chicomoztoca. To escape, the people of Aztlan fled the land, led by a priest. In the legend, the god Huitzilopochtli told them they could not use the name Azteca, and would be known as the Mexica. Huitzilopochtli, a hummingbird god, told them it was their destiny to find the chosen land, and they needed to leave Aztlan. He provided them with the technological innovations to leave the island and live off the land. The migration from Aztlan to Tenochtitlan is fabled to have started on May 24, 1064. During the migration, they people zig zagged across the land, spending long periods in places, often being kicked out of them by previous inhabitants. They were frequently captured and prosecuted by others they came across. The first group of people to arrive in the already occupied Valley of Mexico were the Acolhua, Tepaneca, Culhua, Chalca, and Xochimilca around 1200 AD. The Second group occupied the
Cheech Marin, a comedian actor and activist, said, “You have to want to be Chicano to be Chicano.” What Cheech Marin means by this is that being Chicano is something Chicanos feel and think instead of letting others give them that title. Before there were Aztecs and Chicanos there were the Mexica. The Mexica were natives who migrated all through out what is now known as Mexico. They each spread to different parts of the land. Most ended up in what is now present day Mexico City. Those Mexica later became the Aztecs. The Aztecs had a myth of how the earth and all living things were created. In the myth the Aztec sun god and the goddess of Earth both created all living things. Hence, making all Aztecs royalty. The city was then destroyed by the Spanish conquistadores. Although the Spaniards won the Aztecs didn’t go down without a fight.

What exactly does Aztlan mean? There are various definitions, such as the ancestral homeland of the Aztec people and their descendants or everyone’s individual Aztlan which is ones’ personal sanctuary. A place one creates in their own image consisting of features that show what kind of person they are, while at the same time still recognizing their ethnic culture. We all have this place though not everyone’s is the same. Your hobbies, interests, the way you dress all make up this special place. Without it, we would be metaphorically lost. For example, in the essay “Refiguring Aztlan”, it says, “Through Aztlan we come to better understand psychological time, regional make up, and evolution. Without any one of these ingredients, we would be contempo-rary displaced nomads, suffering the diaspora in our own land, and at the mercy of other social forces. Aztlan allows us to come full circle with our communal background as well as maintain ourselves as
The history of the Canadians and the Aztecs are really indistinguishable. Both of them were the original inhabitants of their own land. To see the comparison between the Aztecs and Canada’s indigenous people let’s track back in Canadian history. This will also make it a bit easier to see which inhabitants struggled the most. Finally, we will also be able to compare and contrast between the two indigenous people.
August 13th, 1521 marked the end of a diabolical, yet genius group of leaders. They were referred to as the Aztecs. They were an extremely advanced ancient civilization. The Aztec’s were overthrown by the Spanish, yet we still haven’t forgotten the Aztecs. But since their culture was so complex it’s hard to know what is the most necessary thing to study when it comes to them, especially when their were so many things that defined their culture. The Aztecs were highly religious and believed in human sacrifice. They also had a complex method of farming called chinampas. This grew an extremely large amount of food per year by using canals. This was extremely successful because of how complex it was. When asked if historians should emphasize agriculture
The children which were the stars and Coyotxauhqu became jealous and feared that now they would no longer be as important to her and decided the murder her. The children decapitated the Coatlicue which cause the new born child Huitzilopotchi to be born in armor and seek vengeance upon his siblings. He threw his sisters body down the mountain and tossed her head into the air to become the moon. This myth was used by the Aztecs as a metaphors as to why the sun, moon, and stars are how they are now, but also to show how Huitzilopotchi became the sun god telling how the sun and moon came into place. The Aztec people traveled until they found a cactus with an eagle nesting obeying Huilzilopotchli command and settled there which is now known as Tenochtitlan. After the fall of the Aztec, the work was found by Christians and reburied because of the assumption that it represented something evil. The art was not supposed to be viewed as evil but to show the Coatlicue as part human, part earth animal, and animal that represented life and death. The goddess played a
Nezahualcoyotl (Hungry Coyote) born in 1402 in Texcoco, was considered the greatest poet of ancient Mexico. He was the ruler of the city-state of Texcoco, which together with the city-states of Tenochtitlan and Tlacopan made up the Aztec Empire. The Aztec Empire ruled the Valley of Mexico for 93 years (1428-1521) until Hernan Cortes’s Spanish conquistadores and his native allies defeated it. The Aztecs controlled almost all of central Mexico, except the Tlaxcalteca kingdom. However, Nezahualcoyotl was not an Aztec; his people were the Alcohuans, one of the northern tribes that migrated into the Valley of Mexico. After becoming the ruler of his homeland, his talents and vision of the city flourished and Texcoco became the center of the empire.
The Cahuilla were a Native Southern Californian tribe that occupied the Riverside County, Higher Palomar Mountain Region and East Colorado Desert. The tribe was divided into two groups or moieties know as Wildcats or Coyotes. The Cahuilla lived in small clans that varied in population, and together all the separate clans made up a larger political group called a sib ”http://www.aguacaliente.org/content/History%20&%20Culture/.” The tribe was at first considered to be very simple and savage because they were never interacted with. As the Europeans and Spanish Missionaries considered the desert an inhospitable place that was better to avoid because of its lack of food resources. Little did those European and Spanish missionaries know that the land was ripe with food, only if you knew the land and the seasons. The Cahuilla were a very interesting tribe that cared and loved their land and in return the land would provide them with an abundance of food and resources. The Cahuilla had a very simple yet intricate life that involved a seasonal migration in order to gain access to different foods. They relied on different ways of acquiring food which involved both hunting and gathering.
The Toltecs were polytheistic, meaning they worshipped many gods, and believed in mythology. Although they believed in many gods, Quetzalcoatl was the central deity. Quetzalcoatl means “quetzal-feather snake”, so he was often depicted as a rattlesnake with scales covered by long green feather of the quetzal bird. He is believed not only to be the creator of the universe, but also the controller of wind, fertility, and breathing. There are many historians who debate whether or not Quetzalcoatl was an actual man and ruler over the Toltecs at one time, but there are many legends from the Aztecs claiming he was. In the article about Toltec culture in the book Early Civilizations in Americas, one of the most common legends claims that the king, Quetzalcoatl, made a chastity vow, but the citizens were unhappy with him, so they tried tricking him into doing shameful acts. The citizens gave him an alcoholic beverage, and he got intoxicated. The next day, he woke up next to his sister, and breaking his vow of chastity. Ashamed of his actions, Quetzalcoatl decides he is no longer a fit ruler and he resigns from the throne and is exiled from his land in 987 CE. This is significant because the later Toltecs honored Quetzalcoatl for his accountability and loyalty. He was the “glue” for the society because he was a central figure, who all the citizens worshipped. Although the citizens
The reason for this is a prophecy. The prophecy said that when they saw an eagle sitting on a cactus with a snake in its mouth that was where they were to build their great civilization. For that reason they called it Tenochtitlan, meaning place of the cactus. Since the prophecy was filled upon an island in the middle of a small lake, called Lake Texcoco, land became short.
The fact that Aztec culture found a way to survive is significant. It shows the powerful resiliency of its followers and their ability to adapt to difficult conditions. From the followers of the Virgin of Guadalupe to those of the Day of the Dead to the worshippers of La Santa Muerte, the existence of the vibrant stories, holidays and traditions reveal that no matter how much a culture is oppressed, the fundamental human need for a collective identity allows conquest cultures to not only survive, but flourish as well.
The Aztec civilization was a very complex society that was feared and known well for their various gory sacrifices done to please their many gods in their polytheistic religion. The much feared civilization began by the exile of one of the two Toltec leaders, which lead to the decline of the Toltec state that was later replaced by Mexica, or the Aztecs. According to the Aztecs, the land chosen to build their main city was chosen by the portrayal of an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its mouth. Through military might, the Aztecs managed to become the most powerful civilization in the mid-fourteenth century. They maintained their power through military might and the fear they caused other civilizations because of the human sacrifices they performed on their captured victims.
In the Aztec creation story, a few major notes that needs to be pointed out with the first being that the Aztec’s story has changed with the passage of time, so the story itself has certain variations depending on the time it was recorded. The second note is that the world history involves a cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, which can be observed in the creation story the Legend of the Five Suns, which is the creation of various suns with the fifth being the one seen now (Aztec). In its basic form, the creation story starts out with that in the beginning there was only a void, that was until the Dual god, which has many names with the common being Ometecuhtli, Omecihuatl, was born. The Dual god is best described as “good and bad, chaos and
The Aztec Empire was the largest civilization of the Americas in the early 16th century until Spanish conquistadors arrived in the New World. A motley crew of men from Spain, they were led by Hernan Cortes who intended to expand lands for the Spanish monarch and through many factors he was able to do just that. The three main factors that contributed to the fall of Tenochtitlan by the hands of Spanish conquistadors were significance of native allies, difference in battle tactics among the natives and conquistadors, and widespread disease. Another chapter in the Spanish colonization of the Americas, this one stands out in particular due to its unorthodox sequence of events that led a small group of men to defeating an entire empire in a few short years.
The Aztecs came from Azatlan which is the mythical place of origin(Aztecs of Lost Civilization). Huizilopochtli, the god of war, told the Aztecs to leave Azatlan and wander until they saw an eagle perched on a cactus growing out of a rock and eating a snake(Los Aztecas). The Aztecs traveled many years to find the legend and finally found it while at Lake Texcoco. Lake Texcoco was ruled by the Toltecs between the 10th and 11th centuries(Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia). Since many other tribes also migrated to Lake Texcoco at the same time, the Aztecs were pushed out to the westside of the lake to a swampy area. The only piece of dry land they had was a little island surrounded by marshes. Over a long period of time they built their empire with chinapas. Chinapas were formed by piling up mud from the lake bottom to make little islands(Aztec Empire History). Tenochtitlan (currently Mexico City), which means "Place of the Cactus", became the capital in 1325 and soon there came many islands in which bridges were built to connect the mainland (Los Aztecas). They also dug canals and constructed aqueducts. There were many religious structures, and they built temples and pyramids. By 1502 the Aztec Empire expanded from Guatemala to San Luis Potosi which is in Central and Southern Mexico and extended 800 miles along a northwest-southeast axis. The Aztecs conquered many cities and all became part of the empire which was wedged between high mountains and surrounded by lakes(Aztecs of Lost Civilization/ Azetc Empire History).
