Chapter One: Black Clouds
Screams of terror and dark enjoyment echoed off of the halls. From men, women, and even children, it was hell and Fin had woken up in it. Her small five year old body was shaking as her hands held tiny fists of blanket. She was starring into darkness, too frightened to move but the screams were getting closer. Her body moved quickly deciding for her, in an attempt to save itself from whatever was creating the horror.
Her hand smacked the light, it flickered dimming and her heart jumped. Fin knew that the flickering wasn’t electrical. It was the darkness. She threw herself out the door, a scream catching in her throat as she saw the dark monster at the end of the hallway coming for her. Fin pushed herself in the opposite direction she knew if she could just stay ahead of it she would be okay.
Fin looked to the doors lining the hallway searching for someone anyone who could help her. However, the faceless, those consumed by the darkness, were there. When they saw her they groaned happily, stretching the steel of the doors trying to grab her, but as long as the light stayed on her she was safe.
A loud pop brought that safety down as she looked behind her instinctively. It was too close, but Fin pushed her body to go faster as the lights exploded one by one each deafening pop brought her deeper into hysteria and darkness. The air was thick with the creatures hot breath. Its large crystal teeth seemed to be all around her ready to snap its jaws and take her life.
Fin cried in relief as she saw the door growing ever closer. “If I can reach it I’ll be safe. I’ll be-” Her heart stopped but Fin ran harder when she noticed a small body slumped against the door. “Harley!” She screamed, “Harley, no!” Harley didn’t...

Evidently the night of the attack had not been the only strange occurrence. Just a town over from the gated community there was another suburb with a particular blue house that had a large oak tree in the small back yard. It was morning when a small child was discovered under the tree nearly buried in the snow. That child was Fin.
Fin’s first memory was when she was seven and shivering. She opened her eyes to a girl she didn’t know who was trying to shake her awake. Later that little girl became her sister, Harley. No one knew where she had come from or why she had no memories at all. Not even Fin.
Another form of fear that is later introduced is the concept of the boys humanity slowly becoming strayed. In the novel there is a great amount of foreshadowing towards this topic. An example coul...

The darkness of her bedroom crept into her body. As time progressed the sounds of the evening grew louder leaving her in a state of fear. Amongst the dark room she would see the shadow of someone standing outside her bedroom window. She didn’t know why someone would want to hurt her. Afraid to tell her parents she found refuge underneath the sheets of her bed. After several sleepless nights she spoke to her mother about the mysterious person outside her window. Her mother shrugged it off and told her that no one was there and not to worry. Her mother believed that this was either her imagination or eating too close to her bedtime. However, Elyn was determined to catch this mysterious man. Next, she enlisted the help of her brother Warren. Frightened they hid in the closet waiting to capture the bandit. Unfortunately, this heroic attempt was unsuccessful as the bandit never revealed himself to anyone but her. Soon it became apparent to everyone that no one was outside her window. But, these feelings of a watchful eye never fled her. As a result, Elyn spent many nights terrified underneath her sheets only falling a sleeping from
Screeches erupted from each and every corner of the dark green maze, leaving its occupants scared and scarred. The noises grew in ferocity and lowered in pitch, wavering between calm and deformed, octave to octave. It stopped momentarily only for the screams to reach increasingly violent levels.
The night was tempestuous and my emotions were subtle, like the flame upon a torch. They blew out at the same time that my sense of tranquility dispersed, as if the winds had simply come and gone. The shrill scream of a young girl ricocheted off the walls and for a few brief seconds, it was the only sound that I could hear. It was then that the waves of turmoil commenced to crash upon me. It seemed as though every last one of my senses were succumbed to disperse from my reach completely. As everything blurred, I could just barely make out the slam of a door from somewhere alongside me and soon, the only thing that was left in its place was an ominous silence.
Paleness rushes over Janine’s body as she stands there; her face looking as if she seen a ghost. With no hesitation, she slowly shuts the door. The women knocks again, but this time Janine doesn’t answer. “What are you doing here? Go away!” Janine says.
Representing the future and new life, children are an emblem of hope, but in the context of the horror genre, they become a canvas for the exploration of the darker side of humanity and its current issues. Gothic literature often reflects the anxieties of the time as a means of
As a result, she met emotions she did not think existed, felt a huge hollow and felt like a walking dead. Her confused days and sleepless nights became a ritual; therefore, the only life she knows was a torturous hell
We’d gotten used to the screamed threats, and now the frost-tipped night seemed too quiet without them. Everything was silent, and then everything was madness. Our fragile door exploded inward. Phibe screamed. My arms reached for her. I wrapped my body around hers to be a shield, to protect her, and she clung to me in return.
The events were not the only way readers can see the horror in this narrative. This narrative includes many themes that are reoccurring, by implying symbolism and imagery throughout this
A twig popped behind him, and his head flew around. Only to be greeted by more darkness and the thick mist that had formed out of nowhere. His breathing hastened, and he clutched his
Margot stared at the monster that loomed before her, face to face with her worst fear: the cafeteria filled with people. Emphasis on people. The biggest obstacle of Margot’s day was taking the terrifying step into the madness. Heart pounding. Hands shaking. Head down. Eyes closed. One of her dirty, withered, off-white sneakers lifts off the ground...almost there...three...two… “Outta my way!” a hard shoulder slams into her and she crumbles to the floor as a group of boys push past her into the endless sea of people. She was a ghost to them, just a piece of nothingness, just an object in their way. Margot picked herself up and brushed away the single tear that had slipped out of her eye and slowly scuttled into the swarming sea. All Margot
Gaby sat upright in her bed and called Alex to sit beside her. Neither of them wanted to open the blinds of the window to check it out. They were afraid something would jump out and take them away forever. The noise didn’t stop, but then they heard a laugh. Confused, Gaby got up and called her brother to see if he would help her.
... young woman with pure white skin, her eyes bleeding from the corners with the black hair I had seen earlier matted and tangled across her face, mouth contorted into a silent and terrifying scream. Still the TckTckTckTckTck noise sounded from the open mouth. I fell away with great haste from the window and threw shut the curtains behind me. I slept not even slightly for almost all of that night. instead I curled up in the middle of the room with my head in my hands, listening to the chilling noise of the TckTckTckTck sounding from just outside my window.
