“The dawn of the 21st century is replete with discourses of globalization.” (Brah 31). Such is the opening of Avtar Brah’s introduction to her critical article “Global Mobilities, Local Predicaments: Globalization and the Critical Imagination”. And it is within this very context of incredibly varied discourse that she presents her own analysis of ‘globalization’ within the ‘global’ and ‘local’ arenas, guiding readers through brief historical deconstructions of such terms. In doing so, Brah presents a carefully constructed argument asserting the necessity of applying perspectives of intersectionality and critically driven imaginations as the means to answering the “question of the global” (Brah 44), which she addresses through proposing the …show more content…
Though her argument of intersectionality’s effectiveness presents itself though various examples of individuals sharing collective ideals, she is quick to acknowledge the heterogeneous nature of those who attended the rally, despite their unifying connection of desired peace. Such an acknowledgement offers strength to her argument that a ‘reimagined humanity’ beyond simplified, stereotypic imagery and opinions, requires some application of understood differences. Or as she concludes, “…a recognition of another’s ‘difference’ without ‘Othering’.” (Brah 44). With this I easily agree, as ‘Othering’, as Brah offers, is a readily applied tactic to justify the demonization of those individuals and or societies, transgressing the laws of one’s own. Such was undeniably present in the decontextualized portrayals of the Taliban and Afghan culture during 9/11 media coverage, resulting in dehumanized subjects to fear. The power of these tactics is also present in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, as the actions of English “traders” throughout the novella capitalized on such ‘Othering’. This being most apparent in their physical brutality and raids of the Congo for ivory, as they were dependent upon a disassociation from the “Others”, or the non-European “natives”. Marlow himself utilized such narratives, using descriptors like, “The prehistoric man…” (Conrad 32) and “They howled and leaped, and spun, and made horrid faces…” (Conrad 32). Thus creating dehumanizing associations about those living in the Congo consistently, which seemed to ultimately relieve Marlow of moral responsibility. In the 1900s novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, the protagonist often encounters women at landmarks of his life. Charlie Marlow is a sailor and imperialist who sets out along the Congo River to “civilize” the “savages.” The novella begins with a crew on the Thames waiting for the tides to change. During their wait, a character named Marlow tells of his exploits on the African continent. In his recounted travels, Marlow meets other imperialists such as Mr. Kurtz, a man who is obsessed with the pursuit of ivory and riches. Like Mr. Kurtz, Marlow embarks across the African continent in hopes of earning both money and respect. One early critic of the novel, Edward Garnett, wrote in his review that “[Heart of Darkness] is simply a piece of art…the artist is intent on presenting his sensations in that sequence and arrangements whereby the meaning or meaninglessness of the white man in uncivilized Africa can be felt in its really significant aspects,” (Garnett). What Garnett fails to observe is that Heart of Darkness is not only an observation of “the white man,” but the white woman as well.
“ The conquest of the earth, which mostly means the taking it away from those who have a different complexion or slightly flatter noses than ourselves, is not a pretty thing when you look into it too much.” (Conrad 65) So stated Marlow as though this was his justification for ravaging the Congo in his search for ivory. Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness shows the disparity between the European ideal of civilization and the reality of it as is evidenced by the domination, torture, exploitation and dehumanization of the African population. Heart of Darkness is indicative of the evil and greed in humanity as personified by Kurtz and Marlow.

Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad's best-known work, has been examined on many bases more than I can possibly list here, but including imperialism, colonialism, and racism. I would reason that all bases of analysis are perfectly acceptable through which to critique Conrad's novella, or any piece of writing. I would reason this, were some of these bases mainly, racism not taken to an extreme level. In arguing racism, many critics seem to take Heart of Darkness as Conrad's unwavering view on Africa, Africans, life, or whatever else one may please to take it as. I, therefore, propose that Heart of Darkness be taken for what it truly is: a work of fiction set in late 19th century Europe and Africa.
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is one of the most widely recognized and acclaimed novellas written. But with fame and recognition comes controversy, which is clearly demonstrated by the broad interpretations of the book. Many people believe Heart of Darkness is racist, while others believe the book is perfectly civil. Further, he sees such conquests as taking land and materials away from those people who "have a different complexion or slightly flatter noses." As he understands it, colonization is only successful if there lays within it a "devotion to efficiency" and a creation of civilization, not exploitation (Conrad, 4). In the novel, as seen through the eyes of his narrator Marlow, Conrad offers a frank critique of European imperial colonialism be alluding to the poignant differences between black and white and dark and light.

After such, he is alert and on his toes for any unexpected occurrences that could happen but it turns out it was nothing. When Marlow thinks back on this incident he comes to a realization of the disparity of the expressions of the African Americans or blacks and the whites. In effect to what just happened and what Marlow has experienced just now, he is to say the least, very inquisitive to have observed the dissimilarities in expressions of the African Americans and the whites among himself, seeing that they were just as unfamiliar with the African Congo as he was.

Conrad’s Heart of Darkness deals with a never receding and constantly approaching “immense darkness” found throughout society (Conrad 122). The looming darkness induces an “inscrutable intention” to place oneself above others and assert dominance. Though this darkness remains inscrutable it simultaneously contains tremendous significance to daily life: it provides an example of atmospheres which augment ethnocentric and greedy tendencies, so that we, as readers, may act with more care and awareness. Heart of Darkness is a story in which racism presents itself so deliberately that, for many, the dilemma of race must be tackled before anything else in the book may be dealt with. Conrad used derogatory, outdated and offensive terminology for devaluation of people’s color as savages. This use of language disturbs many readers who read this book.
