Avril Lavigne is one of the top selling artists releasing albums in the US. The New York Times, Rolling Stone, NME, MusicMight, IGN and PopMatters, have classified her music genre as a mix of alternative rock, pop punk and pop rock. Lavigne's earlier influences came from country music acts such as Garth Brooks, the Dixie Chicks and Shania Twain; and alternative singer-songwriters. By the time she left school to focus on her music career, Lavigne was now more influenced by skate punk, pop punk and punk rock groups such as blink-182, Pennywise, Green Day, Dashboard Confessional, and more. She also was influenced by metal and alternative bands. But her influence goes beyond pop rock, pop punk and pop acts such as Aly & AJ, Miley Cyrus, Vanessa Hudgens, Jessie J, Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale, Ariana Grande, and Demi Lovato.
