The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, is a fiction story about two young boys named Amir and Hassan that grew up in Kabul. Amir, who betrayed Hassan and fled to California as Kabul was being controlled by the Russian, was still being haunted by his betrayal. As Amir heard that the Taliban’s murdered Hassan and his wife, Amir returned to Kabul to save Hassan son, Sohrab.
Everyone tries to live happily, however, there will always be challenges that will occur in each person life and the way they deal with it can affect the outcome. In the novel, The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, the protagonist, Amir causes his own unhappiness by avoiding his situation. Amir hopes that if he wins the tournament, Baba will show affection towards him and be proud that he is Baba’s son. Despite Amir winning the tournament, Baba’s affection towards Amir did not last long as Amir says later on: “we actually deceived ourselves into thinking that a toy made of tissue paper, glue, and bamboo could somehow close the chasm between us.” (Hosseini 87) Baba and Amir’s relationship is like the tissue paper made from the kites. Babas affection towards Amir will soon tear apart and they will have to go through difficult times to truly connect. Amir tries to get rid of Hassan by asking baba: ‘if he would ever get new servants” (Hosseini 95) the fact that Amir has ask baba for a new servant shows how Amir is willing to leave behind his good memories with Hassan just to please himself. In addition, as baba refuses to replace Ali and Hassan, Amir goes a step further to betray his loyal friend once again by: ‘He takes his birthday money and a watch that Baba gave him and puts them under Hassan's mattress.’ (Hosseini 110) Money can represent power and greed, which describe Amir since he is someone with high status and Baba is respected by others. Similarly, Greed describes Amir because in order to escape his guilt, he wants to get rid of Hassan. However, a watch represents time and as time goes on, Baba and Amir’s relationship starts to bring a distance and even after fleeing to America, the guilt still lingers with Amir.
