One could be led to believe the motive behind Avi’s motivation to write about a poor peasant instead of a lord or prince in the barbaric times that it once stood would be to show the depraved side of that medieval time period. Avi shows examples of how cruel the time period was for peasants such as the conditions such as the manure and human waste in the streets of Great Wexly, or the room at the inn that Crispin stayed in it smelled of ale and barf. Before Crispin ever found Bear in the novel he lived in a town known as Stromford which was a farming community where Crispin was only known as Asta’s son. They lived in a poor beat up house after Crispin’s father passed in the Plague, which was common as the plague traveled through the land leaving
In the introduction, the author has done a good job engaging the audience with emotions, and painting a vivid scene of the seals being slaughtered. This essay does a good job of acknowledging the other point of views. This essay also has a good, clear sense of structure. The author has a strong thesis statement, that gave a clear indication of what the following paragraphs are about.
The bird-like beak contained spices and vinegar-soaked cloth to mask the stench of death and decay.” And in the dark ages there was a lot of civil wars and invasions and to prove that (Doc 7) states “The barbarians have broken through the ramparts [defensive wall]. The Saracen [Moors] invasions have spread in successive waves over the South. The Hungarians [Magyars] swarm over the Eastern provinces….they sacked town and village, and laid waste in the fields. They burned the churches and then departed with a crowd of captives….There is no longer any trade, only unceasing terror….The peasant has abandoned his ravaged fields to avoid the violence of anarchy. The people have gone to cower [crouch down in fear] in the depths of the forests or in inaccessible regions, or have taken refuge in the high mountains….Society has no longer any government.” In the Dark ages life was hard as (Doc 2) states “The Manor was the economic side of feudalism. The manor was a mostly self-sufficient system in which the lord’s land (granted by the king) was farmed by his serfs (bound to the land). The manor included not just farmers, but also artisans who provided for the needs of the manor, a chapel, forest for hunting, and pastureland for farm
Tan includes a direct quote from her mother in paragraph six of the reading, and she does not shorten it for an important reason. Tan decides to keep the entire quote instead of paraphrasing to add an effect that a reader can only understand with the full quote. It shows that even though some people speak the language of English it is hard for others to understand based on the person’s full understanding and comprehension of the language. In Tan’s case she is used to the way her mother speaks and uses the language, but to others it is almost impossible to understand. If it were not for Tan summarizing what the quote meant before putting it in the text, few readers would have understood what the mother was trying to convey with her use of the language. Tan’s strategy in including this direct quotation is to show that language differs from person to person even if they all speak the same language. She is implying that the whole world could speak English; however, it would not be the same type of English because of how everyone learns and how others around
Many students who are enrolled in FFA are already heading in the right direction to a bright future. FFA has many career benefits within the program. Any of the career development events (CDE’s) have something that will tie to a career in agriculture or to a career of other sorts. According to the National FFA Organization, “FFA members embrace concepts taught in agricultural science classrooms nationwide, build valuable skills through hands-on experiential learning and each year demonstrate their proficiency in competitions based on real-world agricultural skills”(“Statistics”). There are so many careers that tie into FFA, and many of them have to do with agriculture. Not every career that has to do with agriculture is about farming. There are so many different aspects of the agriculture industry that many people never think twice about. Most people are not interested in agriculture because they think it is just about farming or
Have you ever felt stuck? Wherever you are, it’s the absolute last place you want to be. In the book Into the Wild, Chris McCandless feels stuck just like the average everyday person may feel. Chris finds his escape plan to the situation and feels he will free himself by going off to the wild. I agree with the author that Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person, a sociopath, or an outcast because he got along with many people very well, but he did seem somewhat incompetent, even though he survived for quite some time.

Just when you think the name Duggar has settled down in the news, another topic is picked up by the tabloids. The Duggars allegedly claim they are against debt and borrowing money, but according to Radar Online, April 12, 2016, Dillon King is deep in debt.
The Turn of the Screw by Henry James has been the cause of many debates about whether or not the ghosts are real, or if this is a case of a woman with psychological disturbances causing her to fabricate the ghosts. The story is told in the first person narrative by the governess and is told only through her thoughts and perceptions, which makes it difficult to be certain that anything she says or sees is reliable. It starts out to be a simple ghost story, but as the story unfolds it becomes obvious that the governess has jumps to conclusions and makes wild assumptions without proof and that the supposed ghosts are products of her mental instability which was brought on by her love of her employer
During the 14th century in England Feudalism took place which left many europeans poor and with very little freedoms. Avi demonstrates what life is like to be living in this time period through the voice of Crispin, a thirteen year old boy that is wanted for a crime he did not commit. The life of Crispin demonstrates how political, social and economic aspects were when the nobles provided protection for the lands that was not owned but used by the citizens.
With the addition of some key pieces, Dallas’ defense could potentially manifest itself into a top unit this year. Coming off a putrid display in ’13 of getting bamboozled on weekly basis (enough to be one of the worst groups ever step foot on a 100-yard field) defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli was able to hold a suspect unit together in ‘14. Of course, we can credit the offense for controlling the tempo (due to a formidable running game) that mitigated the defense from being exposed, but attitude and execution went up a few steps in Marinelli’s first season running the defense.
“Justice cannot be for one side alone, but must be for both” (Roosevelt). The goal of America’s legal system as we know it is that everyone is given an equal opportunity to stick up for what they may or may not have done, as described by former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Also this is what officials strive for, it is not always the case. Facts can be skewed, distorted, or misrepresented to make one side seem to be guilty without a doubt and to make the other side seem as if they have done nothing wrong. The Crucible by Arthur Miller begins and ends with one-sided accusations of witchcraft. It all results from a group of girls who had been dancing in the woods. After two fall sick, the accusations begin. The girls who were dancing, especially Abigail Williams begin blaming others to look less guilty themselves. Accusations are flying left and right so that soon, hundreds are in jail and over a dozen are executed. Abby’s main goal is to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor, so she can be with John Proctor, a man she previously had an affair with. However, John is not interested in Abby and his
The Mustang – Camaro rivalry has been around for a very long time. The Ford Mustang started production in 1964. It was marketed as an affordable sports car and was immediately successful, becoming the fastest selling car in history. The Chevrolet Camaro first went on sale in 1966, and was actually designed to be a competitor to Fords new car(Edelstein). Right away there was a massive rivalry for the best American “pony” car. Over fifty years have passed, which is the best car today?
The epic poem, Beowulf, a work of fiction, offers more insight into Ancient Anglo-Saxon English culture than the work of Bede, who wrote, A History of the English Church and People. The epic poem Beowulf gives an enhanced illustration and clearer understanding of the culture of the Ancient Anglo-Saxon’s. The epic poem gives the audience a picture of what the Ancient Anglo-Saxon English valued; seafaring, warriors, heroes, and paganism.

In the beginning of the story, the peasants live a harsh and depressing life. Dickens clearly states, “The time was to come when that wine was to be spilled on the street-stones and when the stain of it would be red upon many there”(Dickens 21-22). Through this quote Dickens shows how the wine is a representation of the bloodshed going on in the revolutionaries lives. Also, he states, “Hunger was patched into them with straw and rag and wood and paper.” This term, hungry, that he used is to illustrate how hungry they are for literal food as well as how hungry they are for revolution (22). The peasants feel strongly about revolting against their hierarchy. Dickens describes how they have been “worked down” by the aristocracy. He says, “The mill which had worked them down, was the mill that grinds young people old; the children had ancient faces and grave voices; and upon them, and upon the grown faces, and ploughed into every furrow of age and coming up afresh, was the sign, Hunger” (22). The tone that he uses lets the readers know how the aristocracy is depriving the peasants of their general needs, like food and clean water. The peasants may live weak life, but they are very...
