The Fault In Our Justice System The film directed by Ava DuVernay, named 13th, discusses the justice system in America and the troubles it brings to a majority of people in our society. The people who talked in the documentary were scholars, activists, or politicians who knew what they were discussing. The points brought up were backed up with facts and photographic/video proof. At the end of the documentary, they wanted the audience to force a conversation about what is happening in our justice system. They used different strategies to bring attention to the audience the problem at hand: the justice system in America. Not too long ago, blacks had to use different bathrooms than whites.They had to be in separate rooms for work and had to be in the back of the bus. Segregation was around for the longest time in America and they were not treated equally even though the slogan for segregation was “Separate but Equal”. DuVernay made sure to show the audience how African American people in America were being treated with photographic/video proof. Clips were shown of white people pushing them around to leave a rally against equality or of victims who were beaten. People like Rosa Parks stood up for themselves and tried to make a difference. Miss Parks refused to move from her spot on the bus for a white person. She was arrested but, she started a chain reaction. I believe DuVernay was reaching out to white Americans to tell them what is happening in front of us and asking us to put a stop to it. DuVernay wants to force a conversation about it and not to ignore the hate. They used examples of the prison system, police brutality, discrimination, and the Civil Rights movement. It took African Americans a lot to get where they are today in America and even now they are still fighting. In the film, they played a clip at one of Donald Trump’s rallies and African Americans were being yelled at by his supporters and being pushed around. America’s justice system is still flawed and needs a lot of work. Today, we have social media to get the message across and people can have a voice.
