With the advanced technology, the automobile industries are building vehicles with advanced features and technologies. The cars produced in recent times are equipped with many features like the crash avoidance technology, lane departure warning, forward collision warnings and blind spot monitoring.
Many car maker companies have started the process of building self driving cars that will eliminate the drivers from riding the vehicle; instead it will be completely automated. The insurance policies must even include new risks in their list like satellite failure, sensor damage and other technical risks. There are even chances for the sector to follow the ‘no fault’ form, in which both the parties involved in the collision are not responsible for the accident and so the respective insurers of both the party will cover for their vehicle. Or it can be similar to the utility cost where the premium is based on the usage or mileage. Some of the policies like the usage based insurance policies depend solely on the electronic device that is attached to the car because it contains the information related to behavior of the driver, but this feature is not accepted by many drivers as they are more concerned about the privacy. However, the National Association of Insurance commissioners reported that the there will twenty percent increase in the use of telematics device forecast within the following years.
Shared mobility or autonomous cars
The University of Texas, Austin released a study report on how the self driving vehicles change the perspective of vehicle ownership and said that eleven conventional cars are replaced by one driverless vehicle. There is also a gradual decrease of auto ownership as many people in the urban locations are choosing the shared mobility and public transportation.
In the initial stage, the shared mobility will have an impact on the insurance sector, while the overall impact on the industry is caused by the autonomous cars. An automated car driven without the human touch brings more changes that a vehicle driven by multiple drivers. However, both the system will merge at some point.
