It is difficult to understand that the basic function of a automobile hasn’t changed in the past 106 years.
An autonomous car also known to many as a driverless car or a self-driving car or a robot car is a vehicle capable of driving through the streets and roadways, fulfilling its transportation capabilities of a traditional car without any assistance from human .It is specialized in sensing its environment through imbedded equipment and navigate from one point to other without human input.
It is fundamentally defined as a passenger car with main impetuses being safety on roads. An autonomous car may also be referred to as autopilot, auto-drive car, or automated guided vehicle (AVG).

Stress. The stress of driving will decrease and increasing work while traveling.
Driver costs. Reduction in cost of taxis.
Mobility for non-drivers.Non-drivers will find a perfect alternative of chauffer at much lesser price.
Increased safety. Increase safety overall and well decreased accident probability.
Increased road capacity, reduced costs. A type of train like lane management also known as platooning will reduce traffic congestion drastically and increase overall capacity of existing road networks.
More efficient parking, reduced costs.Highly reduced parking costs because of availability of automatic driver to park at emptier places and pick up at moment’s notice.
Increase fuel efficiency and reduce pollution. May increase fuel efficiency and reduce pollution emissions.
Supports shared vehicles. Can be implemented to increase carpooling services. Increases costs. Additional maintanence and need for advanced road networks may be
Major incumbent companies expect that the autonomous driving systems will be ready for the market in five years. This may be optimistic, but by 2050, cars that drive themselves could well be major production units for companies like General Motors. GM first revealed in 2010 that it had been working on self-driving cars[1]. Last year, GM demonstrated that the prototypes can follow the pace of traffic, while allowing the driver to have his hands off the steering wheel.
Companies like Google, Tesla and Nissan, among others, have announced over the past few years that their companies are trying to develop self-driving or autonomous cars [Ref. 1 and 2]. Self-driving cars can provide many benefits to the average consumer. Studies have shown that because computers can react and process information many times faster than a human being, crashes on streets and roads can be decreased with quick and consistent evasion maneuvers by the autonomous car. They can also help maximize fuel economy by calculating the most direct and fastest routes. When the driving of an autonomous car demonstrates that the computer can safely and reliably transport the passengers to their destination, this frees up the passengers to do other things that they would not normally be able to do if they were driving the car manually. For this reason, self-driving cars can help maximize productivity of their passengers.
Drunk driving, sleeping at the wheel, and loss of control of a vehicle could be a thing of the past when it comes to new innovations being made towards self-driving cars. When one thinks of a “self-driving” car, it means not having to pay attention to the actual driving and going about putting make-up on or playing on your phone while the car takes you where you want to go, sounds completely sci-fi, but it is likely to happen in the near future. With advances in technology, the car is able to use satellites, cameras, and sensors to take the driver where he or she needs to go. Many companies are researching, manufacturing, and testing different
The goals behind self-driving cars are to decrease collisions, traffic jams and the use of gas and harmful pollutants. The autonomous automobile is able to maneuver around objects and create swift lines of cars on roadways (How Google’s self-Driving Car Works, 2011). The autonomous vehicle can react faster than humans can, meaning less accidents and the potential to save thousands of lives. Another purpose and vision for these cars is that vehicles would become a shared resource. When someone needed a car, he or she could just use his or her Smartphone and a self-sufficient car would drive up and pick him or her up.
The driverless cars work all by today’s technology the google car for example needs a (LIDAR) a lidar is used to build a 3D map and it allows the car to see potential hazards or objects by bouncing a laser beam off surfaces surrounding the vehicle to accurately determine the distance of that object. A (RADAR) the radar is hidden in the front bumper with two sensors there and two sensors in the rear this allows the car to avoid impact by sending a warning to the person on board to apply the brakes or to move out of the way when appropriate. (HIGH POWERED CAMERAS) the cameras are mounted to the exterior of the vehicle with a slight separation. This gives the viewer an overlapping view of the cars surroundings and it also looks at the depth and filed of objects around it. Each camera has a 50-degree view and it is accurate to around about 30 meters, which helps in many ways. (SONAR) the sonar is another camera but with a narrow field of view and its range is a lot shorter this camera only goes to about 6 meters. However, it provides
Technology is evolving faster than ever these days, however there is one technology that could revolutionize the transportation industry. This technology is called autonomous cars, also known as self-driving cars. Autonomous cars can be defined as a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment, and navigating without human input. Using different techniques such as GPS and radar, autonomous cars can detect surroundings, thus removing the human element in driving. This would have a positive effect in more ways than we could ever imagine. Research suggests that self-driving cars will become more abundant in the future because they will be more cost-effective, enhance safety, and decrease traffic congestion.
Cars are now have the technology to help drivers stay in their lane, avoid collisions, and have become very advanced over the years. And these kinds of features are not just on luxury cars, they also come on models that everyone can afford. The advancement of technology in cars has come a long way since Henry Ford first invented them. These features are there to keep the driver and other people on the road safe. The first driverless car should be available for the public very soon, since so many companies are working on a model.
Autonomous trucks are able to drive for almost 24 hours without any break so the daily range is much wider. Usually, roads get crowded due to the accidents which happen in the middle of the road and it causes a delay on cargo trucks and other vehicles. If there is no rule violation, there is less accident to happen and the more time saves. Autonomous trucks will help manage the traffic better than the way humans manage because technology itself will not violate rules the way humans
The technologies have improved a lot over the past decades. From smartphones to laptops, the technologies are limitless. There is a new vehicle technology called self-driving car which allows the car to pilot for you on the road. It works by making the vehicle operates itself without human control. According to Alan Amici, a vice president of automotive engineering at TE, “Recent NHTSA research shows that approximately 94 percent of accidents are caused by human error” (Gupton).
Self-driving cars are beneficial because it helps people be safe when driving. Over 80% of cars in the USA are caused by driver errors. There would be no bad drivers and fewer mistakes on the roads. Sensory technology could potentially perceive the environment better than human senses. In the article,
The mobility of the young, the elderly, and the disabled will be increased. Traffic flow could be more efficient and congestion of cars decreased. Since, the people in the car don't have to drive, they can make important phone calls or do some last minute work. Time in the car won't feel so long which reduces people falling asleep at the wheel. However, even if they fall asleep, there a good chance nothing will happen to them.
Currently, there is no way of measuring whether an autonomous vehicle is as safe as or safer than a human-driven car. People, therefore, are also concerned about riding in these autonomous vehicles. Recently Tesla’s Autopilot car was under severe criticism when it met a fatal accident on a Florida highway. The makers then put a caveat by saying ‘any person sitting in the car needs to keep his/her hands on the steering wheel all the time’. Not long after this incident, Google’s autonomous car also met its first crash in California, which raised obvious
The World Fair in New York in 1939 was one of the first times man conceived the notion of self-driving cars. Slowly but surely enhancements added to vehicles since then such as power windows and keyless entry, indicate that we are moving in the right direction to making it a reality. Three-quarters of a century later several different companies are all in the testing the phases of each respective autonomous automobile. Body
Self-driving cars are becoming more advanced every year. The first self-driving car was created by Google’s Self Driving Car Program, and used sensors to detect nearby objects. Self-driving cars are really awesome, but some people think they are not good. Many different car companies make or are making self-driving cars. People are inventing new things, and self-driving cars are one of the coolest things they invented.
An autonomous, or driverless, car is one that contains an autopilot system that allows it to travel from one destination to another with no help from a human driver (Liden, 2015). Autonomous cars use several technologies such as 360-degree cameras, adaptive cruise control, and emergency brake assistance to drive itself (Lassa, 2013). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released a formal classification system for autonomous cars (NHTSA, 2013): No-Automation (Level 0): The driver is in complete control of the car at all times.
