In the film, his competency to raise Lucy is addressed, but the extent of his disorder is not. Sam has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This is most commonly found in males and approximately 1 in 68 people are diagnosed with it as children. It affects a person’s social interaction, communication skills, and behavior. People with ASD commonly have certain communication and social problems that include: over-reacting to a stimulating setting, having erratic eye contact, or sharing an over reacted response to objects by pointing or showing things to others ("What Is Autism"). His meticulous work at Starbucks and specific food order at I-Hop are examples. At Starbucks, the sugar packets on all of the tables need to always be perfectly aligned. At I-Hop, Sam never orders anything else, besides French Pancakes, and fruit on the side. This affects his day-to-day life, because any time his rituals or activities are altered, it causes him to have a panic attack, which results in socially awkward behavior. Many autistic people, Like Sam, have a mental-block, which inhibits them to interact socially with the rest of the world. Sam is blind to non-verbal language and lacks the ability to gather intention from other people’s behavior. Sam has the belief that everyone thinks the same as he does. For instance, he prides himself with knowing practically every trivia fact about the Beatles. This can cause him to have awkward encounters with people socially, because he assumes that people will be willing to sit down and let him rant to them for hours about his enjoyment about these facts. His inability to sometimes fail to see that other people have beliefs, feelings, and intentions is called mind blindness, which is a common trait for those with ASD ("What Is Autism"). This mind blindness got him into a fair amount of trouble in the film, when he mistakes prostitutes indications, for kindness. In the film, he is arrested for solicitation and is released in the matter of hours. His obvious innocence and ASD is heavily

First, those who suffer from Asperger’s tend to lack the basic social skills required in everyday life, such as hugging, communicating, or expressing their feelings. For example, in “The Curious Incident” Christopher hits people who touch him in an unwelcome manner. So when his father became angry with him, and he latched onto Christopher’s arm: “I don’t like when people grab me. And I don’t like being surprised either. So I hit
Sam also lives alone while Radio lived with his mother before she passed away unexpectedly. Based on the seminal works, a person is stated to always be developing and dynamic, is motivated within their occupations, and is constantly interacting with their environment (Law, Cooper, Strong, Stewart, Rigby, & Letts, 1996). The way a person defines themselves will influence the person’s actions within their environment and how it is carried out through their occupational performance. While some qualities within a person are more responsive than others, almost all of the individual’s characteristics that are associated with this aspect are open to change (Law et al., 1996). This relates to the movie because in the beginning of the film, Sam was not capable of taking on many tasks. He started out with a job at Starbucks, where he just cleaned tables, organized the counters, and greeted individuals (DeLuca et al. & Nelson,
ASD individuals may find it hard to communicate and socialize with others around them. However, because each child is unique, they have their own unique abilities and ways of responding to new experiences. Other issues children with ASD have include; anxiety, sleeping problems, and learning disabilities. Those who are diagnosed with ASD or any other disability are usually judged and bullied. In the documentary Violet’s mother says she is afraid of her child being labeled and underestimated because she is diagnosed with autism. A child’s disability can also affect their family members. Family members may have a difficult time understanding and getting to know the autistic child in order to provide for them. They struggle to find interventions such as treatment and therapy for them, the right medical care, and trying learn to cope with all this. At times parents and caregivers can also feel stressed or irritated knowing they have to fulfill all of the child’s needs. Siblings on the other hand, may find it unfair that the autistic child gets the most attention and
