The movie Temple Grandin tells the story of a girl diagnosed with Autism as a toddler in the early 1950’s. During a flashback scene we see the doctor tell her mother that Temple should be institutionalized because she is an “infantile schizophrenic”, which at the time was another way to say someone was autistic. The doctor even goes as far as to say that Temple will probably never speak a word and that it may be because of a lack of bonding with her mother to blame for her autism. Temple’s mother doesn’t accept the idea of institutionalization and works so hard to teach her daughter how to pronounce words. Temple’s mom mentions that she was kicked out of her other school for hitting another student, but only did that because she was provoked. When Temple visits the school with her mother she is fascinated by all of the science experiments that she sees. When she meets Dr. Carlock who is the head of the science department we see how he and Temple instantly take a liking to each other, they end up forging a friendship that lasts for years. Temple’s mom remembers the doctor telling her to institutionalize her daughter all those years ago and feels that if she leaves her at the boarding school she is giving up on her. Dr. Carlock expresses that they would love to have her and comes to realize how very intelligent Temple is. Dr. Carlock showed a film about distorted images to his class and challenges Temple to try and figure out how to build an example, she didn’t stop until she successfully figured it out and built one. The school environment is perfect for Temple, it’s quiet and not very crowded and she is amongst animals which are what Temple loves more than anything besides science. Temple ends up thriving at the Hampshire Country Boarding school and eventually graduates and is set to start college. Temple spends the summer before she is to begin college on her aunt’s cattle ranch. As Temple arrives at the farm we see that she is fascinated by the gate. She asks if she can get out to open it and we see how her mind is scientifically figuring out measurements and angles on how to improve the gate. We see that she is thinking in pictures and she eventually designs an elaborate pulley system to open the gate without having to get out of the car. Before completing the assignment of reading “Thinking in Pictures,” by Temple Grandin, I did not have much knowledge about autism. My only understanding was autism was some sort of neurological disorder that is seen similar to mentally handicapped individuals to someone with little understanding, like myself. I am very thankful to have been given an assignment like this one that gives me more knowledge of something I should already have in my line of work (though I am sure that was the whole purpose of the assignment, to educate the ignorant). I now have a better understanding of the cause, learning process and functioning of different levels of this defect.

Nothing much ever happens in Endora, Iowa. The Grape family is one of several that inhabit this town. Gilbert is the eldest brother of 4 children, of whom all but one, still live at home with their Momma. Arnie is 6 days away from being 18 years old. Doctors told the family that they would be lucky if he could live until the age of 10. The movie begins with Arnie and Gilbert watching the trailers pass by, an annual tradition before Arnie’s birthday. After the trailers have all come and gone, they go into town and head to Gilbert’s work. Shortly after arriving, he is called out for a delivery to Mrs. Carver’s. He leaves Arnie alone in the truck, when he exits the home, Gilbert realizes that Arnie is missing. At that same time, the sheriff goes flying by; it can only mean one thing. Upon driving into the middle of town, it is then that Gilbert sees Arnie. He has once again climbed up the water tower. It is at this time you see the true connection between Gilbert and his brother Arnie. As Arnie continues to climb higher, his brother takes the loud speaker and begins singing to him. He is able to coax him down through song, assuring the sheriff it won’t happen again, he is able to then take him home. Being the main caretaker for his brother, Gilbert is responsible for bathing and getting Arnie ready for bed.

What is Autism? It’s a developmental disorder that impairs one’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Christopher Boone from the novel A Curious Incident in the Nighttime and Temple Grandin, who has become one of the top scientists in the humane livestock handling industry both fall on the high-functioning spectrum of autism. Even so, they do not display the exact same traits and behaviors. Whereas Grandin thinks in pictures and employs this unique gift for practical use, Christopher thinks in patterns and fails communicate his talents with others. However, they both speak their mind and have trouble understanding facial expressions and emotions.

Autism spectrum disorder and autism are both terms to describe a group of developmental disorders of the brain. These disorders are measured in varying degrees by difficulties in social interaction, communication and repetitive behaviors. There is no one type of autism, just like there is no one cause. Experts are still unsure about all the causes of autism, but it appears to be a combination of multiple circumstances. These circumstances include environmental, biological and genetic factors. In past decades, pop culture has created the belief of the possible link between autism and vaccinations, although this is not the case, why does this myth still persist in our culture?
For the purpose of these literature review a search was done using PubMed which is available through the Medical Library of the National Guard Health Services. This research focus is Autism and its management. Using these four key words "Autism" "definition" , "symptoms", and "treatment". As result, nine papers were found and this literature review summarizes them.
Miss Temple was the first amiable person that Jane Eyre met at Lowood Institution. She acted as a firm role model and mentor to Jane throughout her stay at Lowood as a superintendent. Jane Eyre, a simple young girl, was astonished by her character because she never had a person to look up to until she met Miss Temple. Every year doctors diagnose thousands of adults and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Due to the growing awareness of autism and recent developments in technology, scientists and doctors can now discover and observe the effects of autism on society, and people. Starting with its discovery, researchers have been able to diagnose people more effectively. Doctors are beginning to discover what causes this disorder, and are currently trying to find ways to prevent and treat it. Many places have opened their doors to people with this disorder, creating autistic friendly environments where people are patient and understanding. Schools have also become accommodating to autistic children and adults. Autism also puts great strain on family and home lives.
Seth is a 4 year old boy who was diagnosed with Autism. He is an only child and concerns about his development rose when he didn't engage in peek-a-boo or mimicking facial expressions/gestures. His parents, at a young age, would try to engage him or attain his attention with toys, songs, or games but Seth had no interest. Seth early made eye contact, didn't babble, or respond when his name was called. His motor skills developed at the appropriate age but at the age 2 Seth still had no words. His parents had his hearing checked, and the results came back that he was healthy, but he was diagnosed with autism and started to receive services through his public school at 3 years old.
...and Miss Temple had a relationship that can be compared to a mother and a daughter. Each of them cares deeply about their futures and thinking of Miss Temple not being in Jane’s makes are felt lost. Mothers instill a sense of morals to their daughters and set the standard for the rest of their lives. "I had imbibed from her something of her nature and much of her habits" (353).
