The ‘Australian Labor Party’ was formed in 1890’s and is the oldest political party in Australia. It was founded by a group of workers who decided to have their say in the government. Back then living was hard and unemployment ruled. Labor party’s past ensures that the relationship between it and the trade union remains strong, having been created for and by workers. The Australian Labor Party changed its original spelling of ‘Labour’ to ‘Labor’ in 1912. After eleven years in opposition Labor was elected in 2007, however in the 2010 election that changed. Having lost 12 seats Labor forms a minority of the government alongside the Greens and some independents. The current leader of Labor is Bill Shorten

They would like to invest $31 million into the quality of content, teachers and resources in universities. They would like to increase the number of students completing their degrees as well as enrolling. They want to invest into students, giving on average each undergraduate student in 2018 $11,800 and an additional $9000 for each student in a standard 3-year degree. They would also like to invest in Tertiary Education Standards and achieve the right outcome for those enrolling as many students leave university before they finish.
MENTAL HEALTH
Labor Party would also like to address mental health in Australia, wanting to increase the access of clinical and non-clinical services for those experiencing mental health. The main focus is to make service available to all Australians from regional, rural and remote areas. They want to begin early intervention and prevention of mental illnesses to decrease suicide rates. Over the next ten years Labor targets to decrease suicide rates by 50% and make sure that people who are living with mental illnesses are able to receive the support and service that they require.
