Architecture is defined as the profession of designing buildings, open areas, communities, and other artificial constructions and environments, usually with some regard to aesthetic effect (Architecture). Architecture has changed from its earlier years due to technological advances and new, modernist styles. But with these changes, architecture is becoming more and more difficult; some may even say that it is dying. On the other hand, some see it as a growing field with even more possibilities because of the new technologies now being implemented. Aulani is a Disney Resort and Spa in Ko Oline, Hawaii. This discussion will be about how Disney responded to peoples’ needs, wants, and desires, special architectural structures specific to this resort, …show more content…
and how the location influenced such a magnificent design. Aulani first opened in August of 2011 in Oahu, Hawaii in the Ko Oline Resort, which means “Place of Joy” (The Aulani Story). Even prior to such a resort being built in this area, Hawaii itself was already a vast tourist attraction. With that being said, many people requested Disney build something in Hawaii for many years, so they did so as soon as they got the chance. Unlike most projects Disney constructs, Aulani is the first that does not have a theme park attached (Disney’s Aulani Resort). Although Aulani is not technically a theme park, it still has many different attractions and amenities for the whole family. Some of the activities at the Aulani Resort are the spas, fitness center, kid’s club, golf course, shopping, dining venues, pools and waterslides, and other water sports (The Aulani Story). It is clear that Disney includes all of these things in its resort to attract tourists, but tourists are not the only people that are pleased with this resort. It is safe to assume that when Disney came into Hawaii wanting to build on their land, they may not have been very excited about such an event. The natives there have surely seen Disney’s other designs and buildings, but projects like that just would not fit in on this island. But Disney planned on incorporating Hawaiian culture into this resort. When designing this resort, Walt Disney Imagineering worked with locals and learned about the Hawaiian history and culture. Bo Bolanos, who was the concept designer for Walt Disney Imagineering, specified “the goal of Aulani was to create a place that honors and respects Hawaiian culture and inspires guests to go see the rest of the island.” Bolanos also stated that “the resulting design is deliberately architectural, an inspiration for the future, but a way to pay tribute to a rich culture that is still very much alive today” (Aulani). So as you can see, the locals were as much of an influence on this resort as the people Disney was trying to attract with this project. Disney worked to please all of the people that would be affected by this resort and incorporated their culture so that tourists could learn about and appreciate their way of life. Aulani is the first resort in the islands to honor Hawaiian architecture and symbols throughout, paying homage to the culture (Aulani Architecture).
This resort in particular, uses construction techniques familiar to the area to continue with their Hawaiian inspiration. The Aulani architectural design was a blend of the traditional and the contemporary (Aulani Architecture). One of the architectural elements included was the “ahupua’a”, which was the division of land that stretched from the top of the mountain to the sea; this is seen in Aulani because the lobby is located at the top of the mountain, Waikolohe Valley below, extending out to the Pacific Ocean. Another element used throughout Aulani is the adze bracket, which is a chiseling tool used as a metaphor of transforming a natural material into a manmade product (Aulani Architecture). Landscape architecture was also considered in the design of this resort. The Waikolohe Valley mentioned earlier was made as a result of the Aulani Resort. Tall walls of the surrounding resort creared the “edges” of the valley and it was covered in trees and shrubs and eventually lead to palm trees as one approaches the beach (Aulani Architecture). While constructing this project, the architects also had to keep in mind the natives cultural beliefs. Jeff Morosky, the Walt Disney Imagineering Landscape Architect, said “We didn’t want to disturb nature by collecting stones. Rocks and stones are considered to have spirits and are living, so …show more content…
we tried to be respectful of natural resources” (Aulani Architecture). If an architect with a project just decided to come in to Hawaii and start building his own design, that could really upset the natives, especially in a place like Hawaii that is so disconnected from the rest of the United States. Disney and the team of architects working on the project were extremely considerate of the natives and tried to include them in wherever they could. Bolanos says it was their tribute to Hawaiian culture with an eye to the future (Aulani Architecture). Any architecture built in an area like Hawaii should not require as much work as any other place.
Hawaii’s landscape in general already offers peace and serenity for the natives and for the people that just go to visit the island. But to make it even better, this resort lies on 21 acres of pure oceanfront in between mountains and peaceful ocean waters and it is far enough so that you can be removed from any distractions, but close enough to still be able to interact with the wonders of the whole island (The Aulani Story). As mentioned before, Aulani was the first project by Disney that did not have a theme park attached. In addition to the activities mentioned in a previous paragraph that attract tourists, since Aulani is the first resort to acknowledge Hawaiian culture, as mentioned before. Some of the experiences Aulani incorporates into their resort to differentiate itself from other resorts in Hawaii are the Contemporary Hawaiian art and design all throughout the resort, entertainment like fireside storytelling and Starlit Hui which is an evening celebration of Hawaiian traditions and Disney storytelling, Hawaiian activities and crafts like hula and lei-making classes, and excursions like surf lessons and hiking (The Aulani Story). It is said that architecture is a balance between poetry and geometry. Bolanos exclaims, “With Aulani, we are telling you the story of Hawaii – from the mountains to the ocean – through the eyes of Disney, weaving together culture, art,
legends, stories and places with a basis in history, but with current interpretations and an eye to the future.” For example, Bolanos expresses how two water ways that eventually met represent the balance and harmony of feminine and masculine elements as one flows tranquil and the other a rushing stream (Aulani Architecture). In closing, the architects involved in the designing of the Aulani Resort took into account the needs, wants, and desires of all kinds of people and made a structure that was pleasant for locals as well as tourists by incorporating the culture of the island while still having some of the same tourists attractions that people usually go to Hawaii for. Specifically, the architects took into account the wants and desires of the tourists by constructing this resort in Hawaii and making sure that it had all of the same amenities as any other resort in Hawaii, but also incorporated the Hawaiian culture and experiences to add a little something extra. This Hawaiian culture was a win-win for these architects because it made everyone happy. The locals were happy that tourists would be able to learn about their culture and interact with some of the art as well as admire their architectural ideas. The cultural history also tells a story with its architectural design and demonstrates the poetry aspect mentioned earlier. As a result, a different and special resort lies in Oahu, Hawaii that now incorporates the magic of Disney while still staying true to the culture of the surrounding area.

In comparison to other slaves that are discussed over time, Olaudah Equiano truly does lead an ‘interesting’ life. While his time as a slave was very poor there are certainly other slaves that he mentions that received far more damaging treatment than he did. In turn this inspires him to fight for the abolishment of slavery. By pointing out both negative and positive events that occurred, the treatment he received from all of his masters, the impact that religion had on his life and how abolishing slavery could benefit the future of everyone as a whole; Equiano develops a compelling argument that does help aid the battle against slavery. For Olaudah Equiano’s life journey expressed an array of cruelties that came with living the life of an
Egypt is a city bound to its history and tradition. Portraiture in Egypt was the inspiration for many cultures and stood as heavy influence for the catalyst of portraiture development around the world. Portraiture in ancient Egypt was constant and predictable until the late eighteenth century when Amarna style portraiture was introduced. The Amarna style stands out in Egyptian history for its severe contrast and break in tradition. The rendering of the body changes completely and deviates from what is expected of Egyptian art. This falls into the same time when Amenhotep IV was introducing other changes into Egyptian culture as well. As Amarna style progresses it is accompanied by the institution of Egyptian henotheism. Over two thousand deities were to be abandoned during Amenhotep IV’s eighteen year reign. His name would become Akhenaten and the Amarna style would be grouped into a class of ancient art surrounding Akhenaten, his family, and the sole god Aten.
While the validity of his narrative is to this day widely debated, The interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano provides “insight into the dynamics of slavery, the slave trade, and the abolition movement” Traveling back into the 17th century the reader gets a firsthand experience of a life of a young slave who has opened the worlds eye’ and provides reasonable supportive arguments into the abolition of slavery in the aspects of human acceptance and morality, commerce economy, and the freedom of religion which all he has shared with his white owner counterparts.
Maus is a graphic memoir by Art Spiegelman, about a father, Vladek, survivor of the Holocaust and a son, Arty, who wants to know what was it like living during the Holocaust era. During the holocaust years, Vladek was advised by a rabbi that his tattooed number will bring him luck. Throughout the story, he continues to personify the luck his number represents by being persistent and hardworking. Despite suffering starvation, thirst, and not feeling well, Vladek continues to remain humble by helping his fellow inmates. Many years passed after the war ended, Vladek was portrayed as this conservative man, but there was a reason behind that mask. Vladek did not want people to step over him like he was stepped on before; he wanted to teach Arty
In the year 1775 my life was turned upside down. I was born in Manhattan, New York, in the year 1760. Life was wonderful for my first 15 years. My father owned a print shop and his business thrived. Everything started to change when my brother, Abiel, and father, Jonas, left to join The Continental Army in December of 1775. Britain's power over the Colonies was troubling many people, including my dad. My father had always complained about the how the Stamp Act affected his business negatively and that the British are no good. When he joined the army, he had to sell off the shop to another family and left my mother and me with a dilemma; how would we support ourselves and our family? At the time of his departure I had a sister named Amity who was nine and a baby brother who was almost one. I had always assumed I would live in wealth until I married. However, nothing was guaranteed. I realized I was going to have to put in lots of effort to get my life back to how it was before, if that was even possible.

...Hawai`i’s economy is very dependent on tourism, however many locals are possessive of their land, and as they stereotype tourists, many do not accept others as they have a unity for their own. Numerous individuals feel the desideratum to fit the local stereotype because they prefer not to be labeled as a “haole”. It becomes tough and rather intense for an individual, because becoming haole betokens that you forgot and disregarded the local or Hawaiian quality values and ways of routes, as well as the flowing stream of life in the islands. We need to remind ourselves that regardless of where we emanate from, our skin tone, race, physical characteristics, and so forth, everybody ought to acknowledge just for who we/they are and treat one another like 'ohana and show "aloha", and subsequently, we can determinately verbally express "This is it. This is Paradise" (33).
Hawaii is a top vacation destination by many tourists all over the world. When Hawaii comes to mind many people and different cultures imagine sandy beaches, warm, blue waters, lush green backdrops, Hula dancers in grass skirts with flowers in their hair and leis around their necks. These visual representations are iconic symbols of Hawaii and of what many have come to define as Hawaiian. These images and ideas painted by the visitor industry most often take place at the expense of the Hawaiians historic culture. These stereotypes conjured up by the tourist indus...
What would you give to rid yourself of acne? What would you do? The bane of every adolescent’s existence, these red spots develop to some degree in 85% of the population between ages 12 and 25 (Lamberg). Teenagers wake up every morning, look at the mirror, and sigh at the acne on their faces and often other places on their bodies. They dread these awful things that are absolutely ugly. They get desperate and eventually, if the acne grows worse than ever before, they resort to Accutane. Accutane, also known as isotretinoin, is a medication for acne. However, despite isotretinoin’s helpfulness in controlling acne that is unresponsive to other treatments, this medication should not be used because of its harmful physical side effects, its association with psychiatric adverse effects, and its effects on reproduction.
There are things that you will see here that you just won’t find anywhere else. Nothing else matches the spirit and love the native Hawaiians and local residents have for the people that come to visit.

In the process of development of human society, architecture and culture are inseparable. Cuthbert (1985) indicates that architecture, with its unique art form, expresses the level of human culture in different historical stages, as well as the yearning towards the future. According to his article, it can be said that architecture has become one of the physical means for human to change the world and to conquer the nature. Consequently, architecture has been an important component of human civilization. Since 1980s when China started the opening and reforming policy, a variety of architectural ideas, schools and styles have sprung up. Accompanying with a momentum of...
The author explains architecture as an identification of place. Architecture starts with establishing a place. We define ‘place’ as a layout of architectural elements that seem to accommodate, or offer the possibility of accommodation to, a person, an activity, a mood, etc. We identify a sofa as a place to sit and relax, and a kitchen as a place to cook food. Architecture is about identifying and organizing ‘places’ for human use.
