There are countless material possessions and personal desires that draw people away from what truly matters in life. Social media has found tools that entice viewers into wanting their product, stemming from the root of humans longing to impress their peers. conversion in the Church and displays the effects of applying a relentless wisdom to faith. Growing up, Augustine pushed off the Christian religion and spent most of his days conducting sinful pleasures. This life of sin integrated with a longing to grow in wisdom and love. As Augustine came across different sources of knowledge in his studies, numerous factors helped him make the conversion into becoming a Christian. Through comparing the beliefs of a many different religions, he was able to find the one true God for himself. His conversion provoked him to become of the greatest theologians and examples of faith in history. Rather than focusing on his own pride, he gave his life up to the Lord and followed the Church’s teachings with a deep modesty. The way Augustine treated his neighbors and fought for the his faith made him one of the most unique Christian leaders during the Middle Age. Saint Augustine of Hippo found himself going down the path in his early life, used his extraordinary wisdom to find the truth in the world, and converted into become a pastor who defined what it meant to be a Christian.

Although Augustine grew up knowing about Christianity, as his mother, Monica, was a devout Christian, he spent much of his early years indulging in worldly pleasures until finally converting to Christianity at the age of 32. This is unlike Perpetua in the fact that she became a member of the faith at a young age, against her father’s wishes while Augustine chose to rebel against Christianity. The fact that Augustine’s mother was a Christian who urged him to also convert is also contrasting from Perpetua’s story, as is apparent by Monica’s reaction upon her son telling her that he is no longer a Manichee, but still not a Christian. In Augustine’s words, “she did not leap for joy . . . for which she wept over me as a person dead but to be revived by you [God].” Therefore, Monica was saddened by the fact that her son was not a Christian, while Perpetua’s father was distraught over the opposite, her decision to be a Christian. Once Augustine had finally converted to Christianity, he interpreted his faith differently than Perpetua had. He believed that God is good and humans are also by nature good, but that “free will was the cause of our doing ill.” To him, being a Christian meant that he must not use his free will for evil, that he must resist the urge of temptation and follow God’s path of goodness. While Augustine believed in sacrificing desires of the flesh for God, there was no emphasis in his time on giving up his life for his religion as it was in Perpetua’s. However through the analysis of his Confessions it leads me to believe that St. Augustine’s mother was not a decisive figure. Monica was in the background keeping him in thought and prayer however Augustine’s watershed moments came as a result of his own examination of readings as well as his conversations with his friends and mentors. Therefore I argue that Monica had delayed Augustine’s baptism and it was his own experiences that allowed him to come to God.

It is this question which serves as the premise for Augustine’s division of existence into the City of Man and the City of God and articulation of a system of vice and struggle against vice that keeps man anchored to the City of Man and prevents him from entering the City of God in temporal life.

The saint may tell himself that the denial of worldly pleasures will bring him true happiness, but in fact he is pursuing a kind of perverse pleasure in self-restraint. Saint Augustine is looking for happiness from beyond life; but happiness, as Aristotle says, comes from achieving the moral mean in life. If we aspire to the moral mean, we must consider moral martyrdom to be like any other excess. In this view, the denial of worldly pleasures is not a virtue; rather, it is a vice that leads us away from the balance that we seek in our lives.
