Atticus Role Model

Atticus teaches his children to consider things from another persons point of view. Atticus Finch’s teaching proves that he is a good father to Jem and Scout because he explains things that the children don’t comprehend. Atticus tells his children about mob mentality, he states “Mr. Cunningham is basically a good man...he just has a blind spot along with the rest of us” (Lee 97). Atticus is relating to the fact that although Mr. Cunningham is essentially a decent man, he is also racist. He has a blind spot when it comes to the color of skin. Similar to Mr. Cunningham, Mrs. Dubose also is misunderstood. Mrs.Dubose is perceived as an irritable old lady by Jem and Scout, which made them despise her. When Sheriff Tate suggests that Bob Ewell died by falling on a knife after the evidence points to Jem, Atticus thinks its an offer to cover up the situation and replies with the following “Thank you from the bottom of my heart, but I don't want my boy starting out with something like this over his head. Best way to clear the air is to have it all out in the open” (Lee 273). Atticus is a great role model for his children because he leads them by example. By facing the situation and walking his son to the court process, he teaches that facing a problem is the right thing to do no matter how difficult it is to do. Atticus’s integrity compels his children to follow his lead. Not only is he honest to Maycomb he is also honest with his daughter. He knows that he can’t win the Tom Robinson's case and is candid about it to Scout, but he explains to her that he can’t give up by saying “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win” conveying that despite this, Atticus wants to attempt to win, he would fight for the right cause, despite it being futile (Lee 101). Ultimately, if Atticus didn’t do his best to attempt to “save” Tom, his kids didn’t have to do their best to behave making him a truly exemplary
