I will be writing about Atticus Finch from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus Finch is a character who changes personalities throughout the book. Some adjective you can use to describe Atticus and his personality are reasonable, aged, and optimistic.
In the book Atticus Finch portrays reasonability. An example when he used this attribute was when Scout got into trouble with Uncle Jack and she talked about how Atticus listened to both sides of the story. She explained this attribute when she said ”When Jem and me fussed, Atticus listened to both sides of the story not just one”(pg 113). The reason you can use this adjective to describe Atticus Finch is because Atticus listened to everyone so this could make him reasonable. Another
Based on what you have read so far, what are you enjoying about this novel? What are you struggling with? What predictions can you make about what will happen in terms of plot and characters? I enjoy the mystery of Boo Radley’s house and am definitely loving calpurnia's attitude, it's very refreshing and almost funny. I'm having a hard time deciphering the plot, I'm not quite sure why the story is being told from scout's point of view. As for predictions, i assume the story is going to involve a lot more of Atticus and the trial, as well as scout and Jem getting in trouble.
Atticus has countless positive and negative characteristics, but there are two that stand out the most. The first character trait is that he acts a lot older than his age. Jem said that Atticus loved playing keep away and that he was never too tired, but when Jem went to tackle him, Atticus blurred out, “‘I am too old for that, son’” (Lee 118). Jem had never gotten that reaction from Atticus before. Atticus had to wear glasses, because without them he would not be able to see black on white with his left eye. Jem and Scout never see Atticus doing anything, he does not hunt, he does not go on walk, or he does not even travel. The only thing Jem and Scout see Atticus do is sit in the living room and read. Atticus is always on good terms with
When a character shows growth in a book, it makes it so that you can relate better to said character. These characters that are growing throughout the book are called complex characters. Scout from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is an example of a complex character, as she grows as a person throughout the entire book. She has many different traits as she progresses, three of which include: feisty, confident, and ladylike. I will be showing these different traits in this essay analyzing Scout.
Lee illustrates Atticus Finch as a very understanding character, especially during the Tom Robinson trial. During the revolting times of the 1930s, it was outlandish for a white man to stand up for a Negro man. For example, when the towns’ people are talking about Atticus, they say, “You know the court appointed him to defend this nigger.” “Yeah, Atticus aims to defend him, that’s what is don’t like about it” (218). When Atticus is delegated to defend Tom Robinson, he not only defends him because he was ordered to. Atticus intentionally helped Tom and wanted Tom to win. Even though the towns’ people did not like Atticus aiming to defend Tom, he understood that it was his duty to help him. Another example is in chapter 22 when Bob Ewell spits on Atticus’s face. Atticus didn’t react intrusive because he knew that it would affect people’s outlook on the trial and on Tom. Atticus stood above the standard and helped a black man, which earned him respect from the Negro people in town. Atticus was very wholehearted when deciding to help Tom Robinson in the trial.
Throughout the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus Finch demonstrates himself as an honest lawyer, a loving father, and a symbol of righteousness through his beliefs that he instills in his children. Atticus Finch values empathy, respect, and bravery, and he proves himself as a moral compass by teaching both Jem and Scout these values in the form of life lessons.
Scout is a young girl growing up in the south, she is intelligent, thoughtful, and good natured. Her identity is somewhat uncommon during the time she lives in. She is characterized as a tomboy, who doesn’t always act “lady like” or proper by southern standards. Scout most likely became the type of person she is by the care of her father, Atticus. He shapes her mind, while trying to protect her from a dangerous world and preserving her childhood.
Atticus’ statement on prejudice and racism characterises his moral integrity and his empathetic nature. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch is depicted as the complete opposite of what people would perceive to be a stereotypical southern man living in the Deep South during the 1930s. Contrary to the majority of his fellow townspeople of Maycomb, Atticus is a man of great virtue and moral strength. He in not bigoted or racist and is egalitarian in his approach to all people This sort of moral integrity is what he tries to instil in his two young children, Jem and Scout, despite the bigotry and inequality surrounding them. Atticus Finch stands as a moral beacon of the town, a label which causes much friction between himself and other members of the Maycomb community. A clearer idea of Atticus’ principles can be gained by comparing and contrasting them to three other characters in the Novel, Calpurnia, Bob Ewell and Aunt Alexandra.
Atticus possesses the quality of determination. In To Kill A Mockingbird we see Atticus’ determination in Tom Robinson's case. Atticus is determined in everything he does, not just the case. Atticus’ behavior and speech shows his determination. He believes certain things and he holds himself accountable to do the right thing in any situation. In Tom Robinson’s case we get to witness Atticus’ determination to get the right answer that Tom is not
Anyone who reads the novel can tell that Atticus Finch has many attributes that make a perfect hero, but he, like any other mortal, has his flaws. P: Atticus is an incredibly intelligent man. E: We can see this clearly when the novel states “My father, Atticus Finch, went to Montgomery to read law,” A: Atticus is smart, and he wants to use that. He had the opportunity to work on his family’s farm but instead chose to pursue a career in law. He chooses to use his brains in his work instead of his hands.
When people think about heros it is a person in a cape flying into burning buildings to save people or fighting a villain to save the world. According to Oxford Dictionary a hero is a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. This shows how just normal people can be qualified as heros. A book that exemplifies this is To Kill A Mockingbird because it is filled with people that went out of their way to help others or the society as a whole. A person who did this in particular was Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch was a hero because he fell under the definition and was admired for his courage, achievements, and noble qualities.
Atticus is a good father. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus tries to be a good father as much as possible to Scout and Jem. Atticus finch is as good of a father as he is a lawyer. He is a loving and caring father and teaches Scout and Jem the difference between right and wrong as well as equality for all.
Atticus Finch was just a man whose ethics were greater than the contemporary normals. In Atticus' time, it was prevalent for whites to convict blacks without them receiving a fair trial. Atticus had higher morals th... ... middle of paper ... ...
True role models are those who possess the qualities that we would want to have in the near future and those who interest us in a way that make us want to be a better person. They teach us more about ourselves and encourage us to make better choices. A role model is not just someone who is successful, but someone who has had similar experiences that we have had. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrates that Atticus Finch is a true role model. Over the course of the novel, Atticus stands up for his beliefs, respects everyone despite who they are and behaves as a true father. Atticus is truly the ideal role model.
Is Atticus Finch the true hero of the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, well yes and no. Looking at the characters in the novel we will discuss how Atticus is a hero but not the true hero of the novel. It is easy to decide the answer to this topic by looking at what it means to be a hero. To be a hero it means to have the ability to help others that are in need even if it means you will suffer great personal loss. furthermore through the actions and examples of Atticus defending Tom Robinson and Boo saving the lives of many over only one even how Calpurnia is a very heroically figure by assisting with the growth and development of the two characters Scout and Jem.
These morals are bound to the “impartiality” and “fairness” taught to people as children, but become unavoidably invisible through selfish actions. The characters in To Kill a Mockingbird express audacity along with resilience in the face of cowardice. In the novel, one of the main characters is the father of the narrator, Atticus Finch. He is portrayed as a just character with common social grace. As the novel develops, Atticus begins to portray courage and sacrifice that goes against all common propriety.
