In To Kill a Mockingbird the main character, Scout, lives with her older brother, Jem, and her father, Atticus. Atticus is a widower. He lost his wife due to a sudden heart attack when the kids were young. Although Scout and Jem don’t have a mother, Atticus does a good job raising them. Atticus teaches his children many lessons. For example he teaches them to treat everyone with respect and to not judge people by how they look. He also teaches them to see the others person’s point of view. This is why I believe that Atticus Finch is a good father. As I mentioned before Atticus is a good father because he shows Jem and Scout how to treat everyone with respect no matter what they look like. He does this by defending Tom Robinson,
In the story To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, we are introduced to the character Atticus. He is a hard working single parent of two who is kindhearted and does what he believes is right and treats everyone equally. Being such a hard worker, his mind is often on work, even at home, which means less time spent with his children. While Atticus may make some mistakes as a parent, overall he is an admirable father. Some may believe that my opinion is wrong and believe that Atticus failed as a father.
Lastly, I think that as a father, Atticus is extremely wise. Atticus’s wise parenting ultimately wins his children’s respect and trust, and their devotion to him runs deep. Atticus way of parenting is not typical, such as scolding and punishing. Instead, he parenting style is unique, different from other fathers and he is able to help the children learn from their experiences and thus they progress through levels of morality until they develop the compassionate ability to consider from others’ perspective and views . For example, when scout takes up cussing, Atticus does not deal with the situation directly by reprimanding and chiding her. Instead, he leaves her to cuss, knowing fully that it would just make her swear more. However in time, Scout realises on her own that it is not a right thing to do. I feel what Atticus did was intelligent as Scout may choose to rebel if Atticus interfered too much, and she might even hate him. However by letting her realise her own mistake, she will tend to mature as an teenager and be a better person. Atticus’s lessons are also taught by setting good examples for his children. By acting the same way that he wants his children to act, he is the perfect role model for them. He is wise as he is able to set ideal examples for his children by his actions such as defending his clients and treating others. By using this method of teaching, he is able to quietly and subtly pass on wisdom to his children about life, moral values and other virtues.
As we highlight the role of the mother, this is not to say that the father is not important or is less important. In To Kill a Mocking Bird, Scout’s father, Atticus nurtures her and her brother alone as a single parent. Atticus Finch, a lawyer and devoted father, is an intelligent man whose knowledge, consistency, and ability to see past the ill in people are what make him respected by everyone. He is a good role model and proper guide towards his children and is devoted to bringing them up right despite criticism from his family and neighbors saying that they lack discipline and proper guidance. But as the story goes on, it is shown that this isn’t true at all. Scout and Jem seem to learn more about socially succeeding and being a good person in general from Atticus than anywhere else.
Everybody in the world has a different opinion of what makes a good parent. Some people believe that a strict approach works better and others believe in giving their children freedom to learn for themselves. Atticus took an almost perfect approach with his children. He gave his children freedom as well as teaching them valuable skills and qualities. As a lawyer, Atticus was near flawless as a lawyer despite losing the case. He used all his skills as a lawyer to make people believe that Tom Robinson could actually be innocent. Atticus Finch was without a question, a terrific man, father and lawyer.
Atticus is the father of Jem and Scout he was a lawyer in Maycomb Alabama he was very respectful to blacks and taught his kids the same values. Some kids were not like Jem and Scout and didn’t believe in respecting blacks they were very disrespectful. Atticus once talked about that children might need police because some of them were wild and didn’t know how to act towards blacks but that they could be stopped by evasive action (Atticus Chapter 16). Scout thought there was only one kind of people and that’s people regardless of race (Chapter 23, Scout) from what her dad taught her.
A father is one who raises and nourishes his children. Kind, understanding, strict but fair, Atticus Finch is everything a father should be. Atticus is a great father to both of his children, Scout and Jem. A father's behavior influences a child's character. Scout and Jem show the tolerance and respect that Atticus has situated in them. They become curious, polite, intelligent, and giving. Atticus is a wise and intelligent man who teaches his children about life, and plays a principle role in affecting his children's futures. Atticus' role as a father is similar to one of a teacher. His children learn more things from him than anyone else in their lives. Atticus believes that it is more effective to teach his kids through example, first hand. Atticus, whom is the teacher of life to his children, emphasizes on teaching his children the importance of education, doing what is right according to one's self, with justice and equality.
True role models are those who possess the qualities that we would want to have in the near future and those who interest us in a way that make us want to be a better person. They teach us more about ourselves and encourage us to make better choices. A role model is not just someone who is successful, but someone who has had similar experiences that we have had. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrates that Atticus Finch is a true role model. Over the course of the novel, Atticus stands up for his beliefs, respects everyone despite who they are and behaves as a true father. Atticus is truly the ideal role model.
Atticus is very good at parenting because he nice to his kids and teaches how to behave like well-behaved kids. “Boys learn too late, that being ‘the man’, is not the same thing as being a ‘man’.” I agree with this quote so much because if you say that you are the man then you’re not a man and those things are super different a man is brave and being the man is being selfish. I think Atticus is an extremely good father. In this paragraph I talked about how being “the man” is different than being
Unquestionably, Atticus is an admirable father because many of his actions in To Kill a Mockingbird, show that he is protective of his children. For example, “ It was the coldest
Atticus Finch is a stern father of Scout and jem in “ To kill a Mockingbird.” He’s single parent and treats his kids like adults, Atticus is a father that tries to teach his kids the best way he can between right and wrong and how the world works. Atticus is a role model when it comes to parenting, he’s a father everybody needs.
When we are barely growing up, we usually look up to our parents because we believe they are there as the role of our parents to guide us and teach us what is right. In to Kill A Mockingbird, the novel by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch shows his kids lessons that they will need in life to be successful. Atticus is the type of person who usually doesn’t judge people, especially if he doesn’t know he/she. Not prejudging people is the greatest life lesson Atticus taught scout. All atticus wants is for his kids to be an even better person than he is by taking into consideration of of the life lessons that he taught them.
Atticus Finch is a single father of Jem and Scout. He has a unique relationship with his children. In a society where children are not allowed to interfere or ask too many questions, Atticus treats his children with respect, equality, and as adults. His children call him “Atticus” and not father, which infers that they
One of the main reasons why Atticus is such a good parent is the fact that he is teacher. He constantly reminds Scout of the idea that “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (36). This has helped scout mature and progress into a soon to be young adult. Although Scout never fully grasped the concept she showed signs of improvement. That is what parents are for, helping kids grow and improve in life. Another reason Atticus makes a good parent is that he is modest; for example when Scout and Jem find out Atticus was “the deadest shot in Maycomb County in his time” (98). He doesn't gloat about it, the fact that the children had never discovered this before shows that Atticus feels it is unimportant. As Jem says, “I reckon if he'd wanted us to know it, he'da told us. If he was proud of it, he'da told us” (109). This tells us that he isn't concerned about how other see him as a person, because he isn't particularly proud of his reputation. This leads right into the next example Just the fact that he fights to save Tom Robinson shows his kids that
Atticus Finch, the father of Jem and Scout Finch, tries to instill morals that he believes are right no matter the circumstance. Even with the troubling situation in his life, he is able to handle it well and explain it in an orderly manner to his children. After Mrs. Dubose angers Jem and Scout by calling Atticus
The morals for Scout and Jem to live by come from their father, Atticus Finch. He has experienced evils in his life, like the death of his wife, but he never lost faith in the good of people. He taught Scout and Jem right from wrong when they were young, because their mother was no longer around to teach them. Atticus understands that people have good and bad inside of them, but he feels that the good side can always overcome the bad side. This is true when he backed Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping Mr. Ewell’s daughter. Even though no one else helped Atticus out, he never gave up on Tom Robinson no matter how hard things got.
