Courage, courage is accomplishing something that frightens someone else. In life people aren’t afraid of the same thing those people that aren’t afraid are the courageous ones. To Kill A Mockingbird is a wonderful story that is all about courage of how there is a crime that was said done by black man and a white lawyer is covering his case. The lawyer goes through this battle to win this case, but also at the same time teaching his children about life. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee characterizes Atticus as a man who has a lot of courage.
The best character best to choose for courage in this situation is Atticus, the lawyer. One of the key moments of him displaying courage is when he decided to defend a black man named Tom Robinson for the rape of Mayella Ewells. One example is in particular this time blacks and whites didn’t really get along especially in Maycomb, Alabama. What was so significant was that Atticus did defend Tom and everyone thought he was crazy except the black folk they loved him. Atticus sighed. “I’m simply defending a Negro—his name’s Tom Robinson. “Thought about it, but didn’t believe it. Well then,” my father’s voice was still the same, “that changes things, doesn’t it?” In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee really showed how hard it is to show courage when almost the whole town is against you, but she made a great strong character named Atticus. In this journey Atticus had to do something that he didn’t want to do that could hurt his family and his career. He also fought off the town mob at the Maycomb jail.     One of the characters who show real courage is Tom Robinson. Being an African-American and living a generally prejudiced town like Maycomb, Tom was already licked from the start. Tom was allegedly accused of raping a white person and as Atticus says, “In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins” (295). During his trial, Tom could have lied about his reasoning for helping Mayella, to keep himself from getting into more trouble but instead he showed real courage by revealing the real reason behind his actions: “I felt sorry for her, she seemed to try more’n the rest of ‘em” (264). Since Jim Crow laws were active in Maycomb, Tom’s answer was seen as a terrible mistake: “Below us, nobody liked Tom Robinson’s answer” (264). It showed that he, being a black person, thought he was better off than a white person.
